2. I am somebody
I was somebody when I came
I will be a better somebody when I leave
I am intelligent and I am strong
And I deserve the education I get here at
Markham!
Markham School Pledge
4. A different attitude: Dual
immersion looks at what a
student can do, not what a
student can’t do.
History: Why a dual immersion program?
A dual immersion is an
enrichment program, not
a compensatory
education program.
Program that integrates two groups of
students:
*Spanish Speakers
*English Speakers

8. Objectives-3 Pillars of SPICE
Cultural Understanding -
Multiculturalism
Read and Write in TWO languages at
grade level or above - Biliteracy
Speak and Understand TWO languages -
Bilingualism
10. Bilingualism
What: The
students learn to
speak English
and Spanish.
HOW: We don’t teach Spanish or
English as a second language.
We teach academic content
through common core state
standards in a way that students
can understand. They learn the
language as a byproduct of the
teaching of the content.
We place English speakers and
Spanish speakers in the program
to be models for each other.
13. Biliteracy
How: We provide the
students with a
challenging, rigorous
program that includes
grade level content in
English and Spanish.
We provide integrated
content and language
instruction to achieve the
goal of reading and writing.
What: It isn’t enough to
just speak two
languages. To be truly
biliterate the student
needs to learn to read
and write in English
and Spanish as well as
to speak it.
16. Multiculturalism
What: We teach our students to be tolerant by exposing
them to multiple cultures and points of view.
How: We teach multicultural activities that give students
the opportunity to be immersed with a different lens.
