1) The group analyzed existing film trailers, magazine covers, and posters within the same genre to gain inspiration for creating their own ancillary texts that would promote their fictional film.
2) They determined that these ancillary text formats were appropriate because film trailers attract audiences in theaters, posters promote films visually, and magazine covers reach wide audiences.
3) Feedback from test audiences was important - early drafts were not well-received but changes based on feedback improved the final product and increased audience recommendations. The group learned their product must cater to audience needs over their own satisfaction.
1. Evaluation Question 3 - How effective is the
combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
By Olivia, Danielle, Queen and Ashley
2. What media texts did you look at to research
your ancillary text? - Ashley
Olivia (Film trailer ) – Olivia stated that in order to gain more inspiration for our trailer she watched
and analyzed existing trailers that were of the same or similar genre. This helped her awareness of
patterns and trends that occurred in the trailers and because of this she knew what to add to our
trailer to make it relevant to our genre and our target audience. This included trailers for films such as
IT, sleepwalker which she accessed on YouTube. This benefited our trailer, as it shaped how she edited
and filmed our product. For example using fast pace shots.
Danielle (Magazine cover) – To gain more inspiration and to give relevance to our magazine cover,
Danielle looked at various magazine covers of the magazine company that related to our idea and
genre the most, which was empire. This helped her know how to layout the poster best to enable the
contents of the trailer to stand out.
Queen (Film poster) – Queen looked at real film posters which was also similar to the genre that ours
is to be. This was important as it made her also find out how to format everything within the film
poster. It also benefitted our product as it helped her know how to make certain aspects of the trailer
look relevant and flow effectively such as the color theme, the title and social media links.
3. How each ancillary text will appeal to the
target audience? - Queen
I found that our genre alone attracted a large following of consumers aged 17-25 as this age bracket.
This is because they are able to take into consideration the style of acting, shots and props used to
make the film authentic. Furthermore our protagonist shown on the cover allows our target audience
to relate- given that she too falls within the range of age 17-25. In addition with appeal to the
minority of females who are not well represented as protagonists in films. Both ancillary texts lets the
audience know when the release date is and actors starring in the film and the poster promotes our
social network. This is especially smart at appealing to our target audience as this si the age bracket
that use and are influenced by social networks the most. Including this in our product has meant it
can reach a large number of 17-25 years very quickly allowing a buzz to be created around our film.
4. Where will the text appear? - Danielle
These media texts will appear on YouTube and other forms of social media, as it is readily available at the time
of the product release. The film trailer will be released on YouTube as it is a platform where out product can be
advertised internationally therefore spreading knowledge about the film trailer. At the end of the trailer, there
will be hashtags that would allow the audience to access the film magazine cover and the film's poster .
5. Why are these formats appropriate? - Olivia
Importance of Film Trailer
To attract the audience - Film trailers are important because they are a way to attract an audience
before the release of the film in the cinemas. They are shown in cinemas before films with the same
certificate (genre) because this means they are more likely to be being shown to people who will be
interested in watching the film. The whole idea of trailers is to show clips of the film; this means
people know what to expect when they go to see it. It is an advantage to show it in cinemas because
people there obviously enjoy going to see films as a social event and therefore may go to see the film
that is shown in the trailer in the future.
To inform the audience - Another reason for film trailers are to inform an audience of when the film
will be released and what will be included. At the end of the trailer it tends to inform you when the
release date is and the title of the film. This is important because if the audience is interested in the
film trailer they will be curious as to when they can go and see it. By being told straight away this
means they are more likely to go and see it rather than if they had to find out in some other way
afterwards as they may forget.
6. Why are these formats appropriate? - Olivia
Importance of Film Poster
To promote the film to the audience - Film posters are important because they are created to promote films
before, during and after the film is realised in the cinema. Film posters are made to look eye-catching,
interesting and worthy of the audience time. The whole idea of posters is to show the cast/characters, the
production company, distribution company and maybe the location of the film. There are normally two types of
posters, the main poster and teaser poster.
To intrigue the audience – the posters are usually designed to attract the largest audience so, it needs to be eye-
catching, captivating, suitable and general. It is the poster’s job to clearly define the genre of the film. The poster
should have a focal picture that draws the audience in, a release date or indication of when it will be released,
information about the directors, production companies and stars of the film. (usually in the billing block), the
name of the film and maybe a review from a newspaper about the film to promote the film more
Importance of Film Magazine
To advise the film to the audience - Film magazines are important because they are another way of attracting
the audience before the release of the film in the cinemas. They are normally shown on shelfs in a local
shop/supermarket because of this means that they have more of a chance to be seen by everyone and therefore
they have to be eye-catching. Creating a film magazine cover is appropriate for us as we will be able to get a
wider audience since magazine are usually displayed in the waiting line or near the tills. The whole idea of
magazines is to show the cast/characters, title and location of the film; this means people know what to expect
when they go to see it.
7. What did you learn from audience feedback?
- Ashley
I learnt that audience feedback is very important as it will affect whether people will
interact and engage with our product. For example, this was evident through when
we took videos of our audience as a means of researching, especially whilst doing
research on our draft product many people stated that they wouldn’t recommend
our trailer to anyone if it was our real product, which all changed when we came out
with our final product more people stated that they would recommend it due to the
amendments we made with regards to what our audience wanted us to improve.
What I also learnt about audience feedback is that our idea should tailor to the
needs of our audience despite the fact that we might think we know how to improve
it. What helped listening to our audience is knowing that we are creating this
product so that we can get many people to watch it, not so that we’re satisfied with
I, because ultimately if our audience isn’t satisfied we wont be either. Knowing what
the audience wants over what we want is how we can attract our product to them.
