Maritime English is an umbrella
term which refers to the English
language used by seafarers
both at sea and in port and by
individuals working in the
shipping and shipbuilding
industry.

Maritime English
For its background, Maritime
English has gained worldwide
recognition as the international
language of seaborne trade that
employs internationally oriented
individuals who need to be fluent in
English for communicating
successfully while on board and
ashore.

First attempt
at developing
and agreeing
a Maritime
Vocabulary .
SMNV
SMNV was adopted
by IMO in 1977.
It was not intended to
be mandatory but
expected to become
accepted and used
among seafarers.
Brief History
SMCP were
adopted by IMO
in 2001 as
resolution A.918
(22). .
SMCP
IMO realized that
the changing
conditions in
modern seafaring
needed a more
comprehensive
standardized
safety language.

Very specialized language
with specific terms used in
the Maritime Field
It is precribed in
the training guidelines
of STCW
All fields of activity in daily
maritime routine and above
all in emergency situations
