Gentrification Is A General Term For The Expansion Of...
Gentrification is a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district, a
related increase in rents and property values, and changes in the district s character and culture.
The word draws controversy not only in its definition and meaning but also in the impact it has
among human social life. It is a practice that is of ancient origin and has withstood the challenges
of evolving times and is still practiced in the contemporary world. Proposers and opponents alike of
the gentrifying phenomena take advantage of the numerous myths and misconceptions that
surround the practice to advance their arguments. Urban planners have rooted for the inclusion of
gentrification as one of the pillars of urban growth. With better economic status better roads, better
water supply system, better healthcare, reduced criminal activities and an overall uplifting of the
quality of life economically it is hard to argue against an overall gain from gentrification. Yet with
all this, it has been the source of a lot of widespread animosity between social classes. It has also
been blamed for a lot of cultural values erosion with in some instances complete override of the
indigenous ways of life that the original inhabitants subscribed to. Green development is an urban
development approach that utilizes green infrastructural growth and is aimed at alleviating negative
impacts, or ideally have a net positive impact, on the environmentand nearby ecosystems. Green

Wernicke s Aphasia Disorder Essay
Wernicke s Aphasia
Wernicke s Aphasia
Background
Aphasia can be defined as a disorder that is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are
responsible for language ( Aphasia n.p.). Wernicke s aphasia is a type of fluent aphasia (with the
other type being nonfluent). It is named after Carl Wernickewho described the disorder as an
amnesiac disorder characterized by fluent but disordered speech, with a similar disorder in writing,
and impaired understanding of oral speech and reading ( Wernicke s n.p.). Wernicke s aphasiacan
also be known as sensory aphasia, fluent aphasia, or receptive aphasia. It is a type of aphasia that is
caused by damage to Wernicke s area in the brain, in the posterior part of the temporal lobe of the...

Because Wernicke s aphasia is most often brought on by a stroke, this disorder is mostly
prevalent in the elderly, however it can be found among children. Men and women are equally
affected by Wernicke s aphasia. About 80,000 people get aphasia each year as a result of strokes,
and it is believed that about one million people in the United States currently suffer from aphasia (
aphasia n.p.).
Prognosis
Wernicke s aphasia results not in a loss of speech, but in a loss of speech content. Someone with
a less severe form of Wernicke s aphasia may only insert a few incorrect or nonexistent words into
their speech, while someone with a severe form may ramble on, using only jargon, meaningless or
irrelevant speech with typical intonational patterns. The rate, intonation, articulation, and stress of
speech remain normal and unaffected ( Types n.p.). Comprehension and expression of speech tend
to be impaired equally. If one ignores the content, the speech of a patient with Wernicke s aphasia
would seem normal. They speak in long, well formed sentences, however they contain little to no
real meaning (McCaffrey n.p.) Speech often includes verbal, literal, and neologistic paraphasias.
Verbal paraphasias include substituting words that can be related to each other, for example, knife
for fork. Literal paraphasias include made up words that have similar sounding syllables, for
example, bife for knife.

Acute Liver Failure ( Alf )
1.Introduction
The liver is the one of the most important organs in the body, it helps maintain the body s normal
activities with many essential functions such as drug detoxification, also the liver is considered the
main site for metabolism inside the body, It organize many metabolic reactions in the body, as well
as providing the body with major secretory functions.(1)
Liver dysfunction is related to the abnormality in the liver s ability to perform its normal functions,
mainly due to exposure to various stimuli such as toxic substances, viral infections, and trauma,
which eventually lead to massive damage to the hepatocytes as well as abnormal functions of the
liver.(1)
1.Types of Liver diseases:
1.1.Acute liver failure (2)
Description of acute liver failure (ALF) is the sudden loss of function of liver cells in a patient with
formerly normal liver function, which includes blood clots and hepatic encephalopathy disease.
However, the causes of pathological and the clinical causes of acute liver failure are variables,
these causes are recognized as the severe acute Wilson, activated (illuminated) of hepatitis B and
hepatitis autoimmune usually be chronic liver disease instead of the acute liver failure Foundation.
(2)
Even with the histological studies, however, the architectural collapse of the liver, which is a
feature of the acute liver failure, may be difficult to distinguish from fibrosis associated with
chronic liver disease. It can define the process of acute

Nike and Social Corporate Responsibility
Phil Knight and his track coach Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. The
company started as being a distributor of Onituska Tiger athletic shoes which were imported
from Japan. In 1971 they broke away from Onituska and created their own of shoes. The
company was renamed, Nike. It became the largest worldwide seller of athletic shoes. They
branched out and created various products lines; shoes, clothing, sporting goods and digital
devices. They used celebrities to promote their products. The first athlete to wear and promote
their show was runner Steve Prefontaine. Their now well know swoosh was first seen in the 1972

work towards the enforcement of their corporate social responsibilities that they have presented to
their suppliers at the same time they must remain competitive in the market place.
If I were dealing with the same issues that Nike experienced, I would have probably done the
same thing that they did. The need to get the suppliers and factories to adhere to save and fair
treatment of the employees along with a decent wage would be my first priority. To openly talk
to the press, customers or whoever would listen and inform then that yes, the ball was dropped
and we have problems, but we are working on correcting the problems and then outline the steps
that were being taken to resolve the issues. I grew up in Oregon and have heard numerous times
how the company started. I know people who work in the corporate office and Nike treats their
employees in the United States very good.
My Corporate Social Responsibility plan as if you were in charge would consist of establishing

Research Paper On Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath s importance to American history results from the literary distinction of her writing
style, as well as her works that show the difficulty of women in the mid twentieth century. Plath s
significance comes from her writing styles in which she opened the doors to exploration of
feminism to a masculine led society. Plath s life can be explored through her poems and her
stories. By aligning SylviaPlath s works to the events throughout her lifetime, we can have a better
understanding of Plath s importance. Daddyis probably one of Sylvia Plath s best known poems. It
has received many different critiques. These critiques include praise from feminist because of its
rage towards male dominance and its attention to and use of Holocaust imagery. This poem has
been reviewed by hundreds of scholars and the poem has ultimately been deemed as one of the best
examples of a confessional poem.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the void of her father s absence by writing poetry and marrying a man that reminds her of her father.

October Sky
October Sky
Marion Eady
The film October Sky (1999), directed by Joe Johnson is based on a true story of Homer
Hickman ( a coal miners son) who is inspired to build a rocket after the Russian launch of the first
artificial satellite (Sputnik) into orbit. The film definitely focuses on the course theme of being a
social outcast. This is explored in the film through three people, John Hickman (Homers Father), the
town of Coalwood and Mr.Turner (Homers principle).Firstly, John Hickman, father of Homer
Hickman and a coal miner at the Coalwood mines in West Virginia, socially outcasts his son. Why?
Because John doesn t agree with his son building a rocket. This is explored through Homers father
getting in multiple fights with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Homer wins the school science fair and then gets to go to the National Science Fair the
town of Coalwood was so happy for them. The town of Coalwood was never supportive of Homer
and the boys and that is why they socially out casted Homer and his friends.
Thirdly, Homers principle out casted Homer. Now you may ask, how could a principle socially
outcast their own student. Mr. Turner (Homers principle) socially out casted Homer by not
allowing him to do what he loved. Homer wanted to make a rocket to get a scholarship but the
principle made it so hard on homer. He had Homer arrested because he thought that Homer
started a fire, he didn t allow the boys to work on their rocket at school or make the stuff for the
rocket so that it can fly. It seemed like Mr.Turner didn t want one of his own students to succeed.
But with the help from Mrs. Riley she helped Homer and his friends succeed and she fought
against the principle. Mr.Turner never really stopped socially out casting Homer and his friends. It
really shows how a principle can really put a big impact on one of their students
In conclusion, the film October Sky touches on Homer Hickman s determination to successfully
build and launch his own rocket despite being isolated by his family, friends, schoolmates, school
officials and community. This is shown through John Hickman (Homers father), the town of
Coalwood and Mr. Turner

Subject Heading Search Keeping note that the keyword retrieval left me with 3,087 articles, I
then used CINAHL Headings for my search. The CINAHL Heading search allows the search of
literature with certain terms desired in the references. By typing hand washing under the
CINAHL Heading and browsed, I was given terms that were related to hand washing. The terms
were ranked based on the relevancy of importance related to the subject. Handwashing was the
first term found and by clicking on its link, I was taken to a term detailed screen. Listed was
handwashing under the Tree View terms, which are hierarchy groupings of subject headings. The
subheadings were also found here. I chose handwashing and infection control. By clicking on the

The Case Of Barnard V National Dock Labour Board
Analysis on unlawful delegation: Unlawful delegation places a restriction on the decision maker
to delegate their power to make significant decisions to third party entities or other individuals. It
is unlawful to act under dictation of a public body that have been given the power to make
certain types of decisions if that body have not been given the statutory power to delegate. This
was clearly demonstrated in the case of Ellis v Dubowski where the High Court stated that
putting the matter into the hands of a third person or body not possessed of statutory or
constitutional authority is ultra vires. The scope of the power to delegate must be considered
carefully and the courts will regulate the fairness of the decision and not interfere unreasonably
with the decision making process. Another example of unlawful delegation can be seen in the
case of Barnard v National Dock Labour Board. This case involved various rules that applied to
dockworkers and the appropriate way to dismiss them. Dockworkers felt that the dismissal process
was unfair and unlawfully delegated to the wrong decision maker. The dismissal should have been
considered by a committee of people and not the port manager. The court held that this was
unlawful delegation and the port manager had no statutory power to dismiss these workers. The
Carltona Principle: Even though the law relating to ministerial responsibility (being personally
liable for everything done in their department) has changed

Rich, the word itself implies an abundance of one thing or another, the question is an abundance of
what. Many think of the sufficient amount of money one may have: elegant houses, luxurious cars,

The Economic And Economic Impact Of The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution, occurring primarily from the 1865 the 1900s, is informally defined as
the expeditious development of industry . This was primarily sparked by the development of
electricity and it s ability to power machines that would increase the production rate of products.
The Industrial Revolution aided in, well, you guessed it... industrial and economic development
through the establishment of machinery driven by electricity, the establishment of varying
marketing strategies, and utilization of workers. This period eventually led to a more stable
economy, however, not without 3 separate periods of economic depression and the division of
people by wealth. Politically, big businesses obtained greater power, through varying marketing
strategies, and the minimal intervention of government to enforce or propose regulations.
Industrialists had leverage, as people of the working class were willing to work for any amount of
money. However, labor unions were formed to combat increasing hours and decreasing wages
along with strikes. Post Civil War, the rise of industry induced a power shift from aristocrats to
industrialists promoting capitalism. In regards to the economy the increased output of products
resulted in a greater standard of living as demonstrated by the increase of GDP from 1865 1900
by dollars. Furthermore, because of this unequal division of wealth, a caste system was induced
with the lower class being treated poorly, and labor unions formed

celebrated figures in U.S. history. His image appears on the $100 bill, and towns, schools and
businesses across America are named for him. but what s so special about Benjamin Franklin? In
this modern age of technology it s hard to imagine a day when people went without knowing the
weather forecast or looking up a fresh recipe online. It s even harder to imagine living without fire
departments, hospitals, or even electricity. And as Americans it s hard to imagine a day when our
country didn t let women vote or used slaves. Ben Franklin lived in that day and the suffering he
saw around him led him to try to resolve some new problems. Benjamin Franklinstarted out as a
runaway with only one skill: printing; before long he found a way to provide important information
to the public through his almanacs, he became a respected leader in his local community and in the
scientific community, and later in his life he played an important role in American Revolution,
With a lot of hard work and a commitment to helping others Benjamin Franklin became one of the
most influential people in American history. From the start Benjamin Franklin was a problem
solver. Not long after becoming an apprentice at his brothers printing shop when he was only 12,
Franklin found a way to voice his opinion on controversial topics like the treatment of women.

Analysis Of Kenneth Grahame s Wind
Kenneth Grahame s Wind in the Willows was first thought out as stories for his son Alastair.
Because Wind in the Willows was told first to entertain, Kenneth Grahame has broken all the rules.
His book is written like a bedtime story, and Grahame allows him self to really have fun with this
book. Rather than creating a story with a moral lesson for young children of the Victorian era,
Grahame has indulged himself by avoiding realism, focusing on family values and is characters
while also dealing with his own fears regarding the status of the class structure in the Victorian era.
Elements of oral storytelling are evident in Grahame s Wind in the Willows. His chapters lack
detailed physical descriptions of characters, instead opting for the name of the characters to do
the trick. All a child needs to know is that Toad looks like and is a toad. By leaving the
descriptions so open ended, Grahame allows for his character to be dynamic in their physical
attributes. His characters are large enough to ride in a caravan pulled by a horse, but small
enough to ______. They are human enough to pass for a washerwoman and to be put into jail, but
animalistic in their physic characteristics. Grahame avoids physical descriptions to allow his
characters to shift as needed. He cuts out realism, letting his animals be the same approximate size.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Linguistic Distance
1.Linguistic Distance
Linguistic Distance can be termed as the distance between two languages. In other words it is the
measure of difficulty faced by the individuals of two different languages in learning and
reproducing the language of their counterparts. Linguistic Distance impacts the bilateral relations
between two nations. According to the Gravitational formula for Trade, the trade between two
countries is inversely proportional to the distance between them. Here distance can be either
geographical or linguistic distance. Thus, linguistic distance can be said to possess great impact on
the trade relations between two nations. According to the formula, the greater the linguistic

This concept is known as inter language linguistic distance and intra language linguistic distance.
The inter language linguistic distance itself poses a great difficulty in enhancing the relations
among the people. The intra language linguistic distance further complicate the scenario.
The presence of dialects for every language further catalyze the effect of linguistic distance.
Dialectical distance within the language deters the individuals from understanding the same
language. For a machine to understand the dialects within the languages and to respond accordingly
is nearly impossible but for the speech recognition systems. The speech recognition systems are so
trained to differentiate between every single voice based on the pitch, tone and intonation. It is the
sounds made by the individual that more matters to the system than the language used.
In one distinctive method, the languages are all categorized based on their sounds and fed to the
computers. The system classifies the languages based on the sounds produced in sequence and
responds accordingly. However, the method could not yield necessary results as the sounds do not

Satan In The War Of Art Essay
Evil, chaos, and mass destruction are words that surface the mind when Satan is mentioned. An
expression of pure evil, Satan is often looked at as one to steer afar from. Yet, there is a time and
place of everything and even the character of Satan serves a purpose. For there is no good without
its opposing force evil.
If you look at yourself and all things you love about yourself you will realize that all of these
qualities do not come from not you , they are more of external loves that only exist in relation to
you . For example, one may love mango smoothies yet there are not you until you drink it and it
is digested into your body but then you don t have it, and that s not when you love it. One may
love watching movies or going for hikes, an external love of your experience of the world.

Yet without resistance motivation would not exist. It is humans that feed resistance with our fear

of consciousness with an angel and devil sitting on one s shoulders influencing the thoughts and

Analysis Of The Movie Gosford Park
In thinking about the English country house and the lifestyle that came with it, it is undeniable that
what often comes to mind is the forms of conspicuous consumption that were displayed both inside
the country house, and also on the country house inhabitants. Displaying oneself was not only
meant for the London Season, but during visits to friends as well. At the same time, what is also
not seen plays a significant role as well. While on the surface the country house is revered as an

In placing the country in this time period, Altman was able to employ symbolisms that Morris
Weissman, as both an American and a filmmaker, could represent. Indeed, there is a sort of irony in
that the murder mystery plot of Gosford Park was exactly what Weissman wanted to capture for his
own fictional movie: Charlie Chan in London. The movie begins with the guests and servants
assembling at Gosford Park for a shooting party hosted by Sir William McCordle. The housekeeper,
Mrs. Wilson, promptly organizes the guests valets and personal maids in their lodgings, also
making sure all the luggage and guns are in their proper places. Altman, during the mingling of the
guests and servants before dinner, portrays the complicated relationships between and among those
in the house. Servants gossip amongst each other while the guests upstairs are constantly flirting
and glaring at one another. The following event is the dinner, both for the guests and the servants.
In the downstairs, dinner is separated between the kitchen staff and the house staff, due to the
disagreements between Mrs. Wilson and the head cook, Mrs. Croft. During this dinner, Morris

Issues Dealing With Time Management
Issues in My Workplace
MERCY COLLEGE
Joshua Louis
Abstract
This paper will discuss some of the things that I deal with in my workplace as an Environmental
Service Aide in a hospital one example of this deals with time management issues. The biggest
issues dealing with time management at my job are job quality and completion. This is because
staff may try to complete their tasks too quickly in order to meet time restrictions. It is also
important when it comes to the scheduling and payroll departments because some of the staff can
go over in their hours. For example, the people that are hired part time are getting full time hours
to cover staff that may call out or become sick. This can impede our budget and send us into
overtime. There are staff training issues as well because of time management. This is a very
critical issue because people that are new hires must be trained in their certain roles and if they do
not know how to do something correctly they cannot work efficiently at the hospital.
Another issue I face in my workplace are communications issues. Communication is the livelihood
of an organization and, without it, things will not get done and topics may need to be
communicated from one peer to the next for ensure patient care. Organizations and employees may
lack the ability to learn, use, and exploit information without good communication practices. Most
the problems in my workplace also deal with the lacking of supplies and items

American Treatment of the Indian Tribes Essay
American Treatment of the Indian Tribes
The American Indian lived a life being one with nature. In their way, they understood the ecological
demands of the land and knew that if they took care of the land the land would take care of them.

The American Indians were known as migratory hunters who followed the buffalo as their main
staple. This led to the belief that Indians had no attachment to any particular lands. This belief
ignored the facts that some tribes harvested crops and lived in settled villages. Further push to the
West to develop the land resulted in the removal of Indians from those lands.
As the Civil War closed, the Indians with the white settlers moving into their lands and a main
source of livelihood the buffalo threatened with extinction, was faced with a fundamental choice:
surrender or fight. Many chose to fight. In 1887 the Dawes Act made it possible for Indians to
own their own land. This Act aiming to end tribal life authorized the President to allot portions of
land to individual Indians 160 acres to each head of family and 80 acres to others. The land was to
be used to establish private farms, and authorized the Secretary of Interior to negotiate with the
tribes for purchasing quot;excess quot; lands for non Indian settlement. The real purpose of the
act was to further break up the tribes by acquiring more land. Tribes as a whole were not willing
to give up any portion of the land, but as individual owners, the Indians were more liable to sell
the land. This resulted in the Indian land holdings decreasing from 138 million acres to 48 million
half of this being barren land.

my mindset is always going to be easier said than done. I ve learned to find things that make me
happy that feel manageable within my own circumstances. Does one get it the first attempt? The
answer is simply no. Overtime you find what works for your new lifestyle and simply what doesn t.
Aimlessly spending your day in bed when all you want to be doing is working hard, and going out
socially is living a hard cross to bear. In chronic illness, you lack structure and routine however,
when you go through typical grief in life, keeping your normality is something that is pressured to
be vital. Illness is very unpredictable and most are homebound, no two days are the same but
one thing that is certain is the pain each is felt. The days following the grieving period truly are
rough, trying to find and accept your new way of life is hard to become accustom to. Just like a
child learning to ride a bike or walking for the first time, you may fall but you will learn and it will
get easier with time.
When I became diagnosed with a chronic migraines, I was devastated I wouldn t be able to
accomplish my goals and ambitions. That day so many thoughts rushed through my head when the
doctor told me the pain from my chronic migraines would never go away. I thought to

Alison Turner Case Summary
As the department manager of a large commercial nuclear generating plant and a member of the
Plant Nuclear Safety Review Committee (PNSRC), Alison Turner s action or inaction is quite
critical. In the present case, the facility s heat exchanger has a problem, which, according to Turner,
may create significant problems. To be precise, two heatexchangers are operating at 95 percent due
to a sand blockage on the outlet to the lake water side of the four heat exchangers. After an
extensive analysis, engineers in the Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Safety and Licensing
Department concluded that the heat exchangers met the minimum cooling requirements set by
technical specifications. The Nuclear Safety and Licensing Board also offered a Justification for
Continued Operation (JCO) for submission to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. However,
Turner is still adamant because she feels other PNSRC members should not approve the JCO
because they have not analyzed possible consequences in case one of the heat exchangers fails
permanently. This paper will apply moral subjectivism to approve Turner s decisions to object the
submission of the JCO to the NRC prior to a thorough risk analysis. It supports that Turner has the

It is imperative to note that other PNSRC members arguments are highly embedded in cost and
possible loss considerations rather than hazards a possible cooling system failure would generate.
According to moral subjectivism, ethical arguments express propositions, of which some are true,
are dependent on attitudes of people. In this light, Turner believes approval of the JCO is against
procedure and unethical because the Nuclear Safety and Licensing Department has not conducted a
thorough risk analysis. For this reason, she should vote against the approval because she has a solid
ground in support of her

The Causes Of Racial Tensions In WWII
Racial Tensions in America WWII America has always been a place of great racial tensions.
From colonial times to the present day, The United States has always been racially contested.
However, in the onslaught of WWII these tensions reached new levels and different levels.
Americans came to fear the Japanese, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans. While
many believed that these racially based fears were unjustified, due to the racial ideas already in
place, the violence and aggression that occurred during the war, propaganda, and the
government s actions, these fears were not as unrealistic as they may appear today. During the
time leading up to the onslaught of the Second World War, the Japanese had never been
considered much of a threat on the international stage. The Japanese had stayed unindustrialized
and rather primitive until this time. As far as White Europeans were concerned the Japanese
were little men . They were not at all anywhere near comparable to the sophisticated and racially,
economically, morally, and physically superior Whites of the Western Hemisphere (Dower 173).
However, Japanese violence quickly caused these ideas of weak and harmless Japanese to fade
away. On December 7, 1941 , the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor, and continued to have
victories in Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Wake and Midway Island soon after (Gorn
202) Theses victories revealed the power and violence the Japanese were capable of. The

National Geographic Photographers Review
National Geographic (before the world wide web) brought the world to its readers. The

reality is that it s a grueling task to get that perfect photo. Extreme weather, harsh environments and

How Does Reality Tv Affect American Culture
On cable nowadays, whether you re watching a movie or a TV show, there are about four to five
minutes of commercials. Most commercials were seen on tv consist of new reality TV shows. If
not new, it could date back to the 1940 s. Although, the shows that were airing years ago were
much less indecent. It honestly seems that reality TV continues to go downhill. In this research
paper, I will be talking about the negative effects of reality televisionon its viewers and how it
affects the American culture of today s society.
People may disagree and say there are positive effects, I realize that. On the contrary, the negative
effects seem to outnumber the positive effects. Reality TV stars are becoming huge role models

Reality TV is most definitely a reflection on our society today. There are multiple ways it can
affect our daily lives. Whether you re watching episodes of a regular show or an episode of
reality TV, today we feel it is necessary to talk about it with the people we wouldn t normally
interact with. Many people are addicted to watching all types of shows, and the internet just
allows people to talk about it with different fans or peers. We allow these shows to take over
much more of our lives. In other countries, our reality TV shows make us seem ignorant. Most of
these shows don t give off a positive view of America s society. Thus, when other countries see
our reality TV shows that are real they are not having a positive feedback. Seems as if these
shows are driving younger people to become obsess with money and fame. Many people have
been one to say they would love to leave their chances of getting a good education if they could
just become a star on a reality television show and make lots of money. That just shows that it
makes young kids believe it s okay to be put onto a television show for some stupid reason to just
make money. Networks should be putting on educational reality television shows, thus showing
other countries that we are not as ignorant as we seem and maybe then reality shows will not be as
bad of an influence on

The British Occupation Of Egypt
British Occupation of Egypt in 1882, the Suez Canal and British Involvement in Egyptian Policy
The British occupation of Egypt in 1882 was a key event in the history of Egypt, they went
bankrupt in 1876 and were under dual control of Britain and France in 1879. Egypt s banks were
taken over by British and French representatives and the Suez Canal was also under the British and
French control. The Urabi revolt of 1879 1882 caused a huge uprising against British/French control
of Egypt as Ahmed Urabi rose up against the Khedive of Egypt Tewfik Pasha. The British were
forced to intervene before they lost control of this region that held their most valuable pathway to

The fighting only lasted a couple months and for the British in confirmed their control of Egypt
and allowed them to take control of not just the financial, but also the economic side of Egypt. The
British were very interested in Egyptian cotton as it grew in long fiber which made it better for
making clothing. This is just one of many interests the British had in this region.
The British occupation of Egypt began to make Egyptians question how much control of Egypt
was actually in their hands and this led to revolutionaries like Urabi standing up against the
British. The British occupied Egypt in 1882 because they wanted to keep control of the Suez
Canal for direct access to India, they wanted to keep the government under the Khedive s control
so they could keep their access to Egypt s economic resources, especially cotton and they wanted
to protect their joint control alliance with France in order to control the Egyptian nationalists.
There are many conflicting ideas about why the British occupied Egypt, whether it be for
economic purposes or for strategic purposes, the main reason was because of their control of the
Suez Canal.
Alexander Scholch argues that because of initiatives by British Prime Minister William Gladstone,
who wanted to take control

Modern Femininity And Gender Roles
Though Hannah Höch may be a jack of all trades in the art realm having dabbled in painting,
drawing, printmaking, textiles, pattern making, and photography she certainly is a master of
collage. A German artist of the 20th century, Höch is primarily known for her turbulent romantic
relationship with Czech artist Raoul Hausmann, one of the founders of the Berlin Dadamovement.
Hausmann credited himself and Höch as the inventors of photomontage. Höch uses her collages
to comment and critique the unstable sociopolitical state in Germany at the time. Her collages also
highlight the growth of mass media and new technology. Perhaps most importantly, Höch
challenges the concept of modern femininity and gender roles through her work. As the only female
Berlin Dada artist, Hannah Höch takes a unique and important perspective on the social and
political changes occurring in 20th century Germany. Höch was born in 1889 in Gotha, Germany.
She moved to Berlin in 1912 to study calligraphy, embroidery, wallpaper design, and graphic art
(National Museum of Women in the Arts). In 1915, she met Raoul Hausmann, with whom she had
a seven year relationship. From 1916 to 1926, she worked in the handicrafts department of a
magazine and newspaper publishing company. Her work included designing knitting, crocheting,
and embroidering patterns. Later on, she incorporated lace and embroidery patterns in her
photomontages juxtaposing these traditional women s crafts with modern culture. In 1926,

Essay on Boer War
The Boer War was a conflict that lasted from 1899 to 1902 in southern Africa between Great
Britain and their allies, Transvaal (South African Republic) and Orange Free State, in what is now
South Africa.
Throughout the 19th century, after Great Britain conquered the Cape of Good Hope in 1814 and
expanded its territory in Southern Africa, there was tension between the British settlers and the
Dutch descended population which were called Afrikaners or Boers. This resulted in the Afrikaner
migration called the Great Trek, which was from 1835 to 1843, and the establishment of the
Afrikaner republics. These republics were called Natal, Orange Free State, and the South African
Republic. Natal became a British colony in 1843, but the Transvaal ... Show more content on

The South African Republic and the Orange Free Stated made an alliance. They then declared
war on the British on October 12, 1899 because they were uncooperative with Kurger s demands.
The Afrikaner forces were successful in invading Natal and Cape Colony. In December the
British commander in chief Sir Redvers H. Buller sent fresh troops to relieve the British forces
in three war zones. These zones were Colenso, Natal, the hills of Magersfontein on the Orange
Free State and Cape Colony borders, and the mountain range of Stormberge in the Cape Colony.
Within a week, which is referred to as the Black Week by the British, each of the new units had
been defeated by Afrikaner forces.
On January 10, 1900, the British general Frederick S. Roberts was sent to replace Buller as
commander in chief. However, Buller remained to fight throughout the war. Early in February,
Roberts ordered the British commander John D. P. French north to relieve the city of Kimberley.
Roberts marched northeastward from Cape Colony into the Orange Free State. Attacked by the
Afrikaner general Piet Cronje on February 27, Roberts fought back successfully and forced the
surrender of Cronje and his troops. On March 13, Roberts entered Bloemfontein, which was the
capital of the Orange Free State. Roberts captured Johannesburg on May 31 and Pretoria on June 5.
After they won, President Kruger went to Europe and Roberts returned to England in January 1901

The book, My Antonia, can be a historical text due to the constant flashbacks the narrator of the
story tells in a nostalgic fashion. The first such example in the book where the narrator has a

Iowa, our talk kept returning to a central figure, a Bohemian girl whom we had both known long
ago. More than any other person we remembered, this girl seemed to mean to us the country, the
conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood (Cather, 1918, p. 2). In this quote, the narrator

Masculinity
In Paul Theroux s essay being a Man Theroux describes the detrimental effects of gender roles on
the individual, specifically focusing on males and their quest for masculinity. Even the expression
Be a man! strikes me as insulting and abusive. It means: Be stupid, be unfeeling, obedient, soldierly,
and stop thinking.
Theroux continues by describing society s idea of manliness as destructive. A males desire to be
manly fuels anti feministic beliefs, and without disposing of this traditional idea of manliness,
males are doomed to repeat a cycle of insecurity and dependence on others to boost their own egos.
Theroux builds on the idea of the grotesque mature of manhood in America by describing how
masculinity Denies men the natural friendship of women. He uses his own experiences in order to
expand on this point. Theroux claims that at the age where he craved the attention of girls, he was
sent off to boy s cam. Furthermore, Theroux blames sports for teaching boys to forsake ... Show

On the contrary, he describes it as an unmerciful and punishing burden. While women have to
deal with a variety of problems, men also have to deal with their own set of problems and

justification for men objecting feminism, And this is also why men often object to feminism, but
are afraid to explain why: of course women have justified grievance, but most men believe and
with reason that their lives are just as bad. This statement is a critical point in the essay because it
drives home the idea that both men and women have their own set of grievances.. However, the
issues women face are much more prominent, therefore the problems that men face are
overshadowed by the problems that women face. While Theroux acknowledges the struggle of
women, he wants to shatter the illusion that men live carefree

The Ideology Of Slavery By Drew Gilpin Faust
In The Ideology of Slavery by Drew Gilpin Faust, in Chapter 4 which is James Henry Hammond
that writes a letter to an English Abolitionist, in a section he describes how he believes that
Slavery is not a sin and is approved by Christ. It would seem that while God commanded Moses
to free his people that were slaves to the Pharaoh, man is overlooking these in the Bible and that
they are creating their own law and how their religion differs totally by what they do. I think, then,
I may safely conclude, and I firmly believe, that American Slaveryis not only not a sin, but
especially commanded by God through Moses, and approved by Christ through his apostles (Faust
175). When reasoning between what is right and wrong, Americans only found that what they were
doing was not necessarily evil or wrong just that God permitted it, and also white Americans found
slavery to be very significant for their own lives, due to the fact that their way of making money
and making a living involved the owning of humans to make themselves the most profitable.
While Slavery was against humanity and Abolitionists who believed in abolition of the practice
of slavery, the South had their own reasons why slavery was needed in America and how
basically they supported pro slavery. For instance, some arguments for slavery were, Sudden end

that does not play out until much later in the film relates to the demonstration of the debilitating
extent of Johns inability to act in the face of heights, once with the police officer and then with his

expectation of suspense and thrill and mystery shrouding the true identity and relation of characters

The rooftop chase creates an expectation of dark drama, which moves into the scene with Midge in

focuses on how money is divided up to schools. It appears that the value of the homes in the

districts don t receive as much money as the affluent districts because their property isn t worth as

that reflects the positive side of this process. In New York, the children in the middle class districts

The Importance Of Masculinity
Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning
small battles with honor, (Norman Mailer). Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody.
For some people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my
dad believes that in order to have masculinityhe must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks
having to do with landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he
says something along the lines of I can fix that in a minute or I ve just got to go get the supplies.
He then waits until my mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that we did not
give him enough time to get it done. My dad, along with my other malefriends, feels that since he
is a male he needs to prove his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. My father went
to school at Johnson and Wales University for a degree in criminal justice. Getting a bachelor s
degree in criminal justice does not teach one how to fix the caulk in a bathtub; in spite of that,
my father attempted this task. A couple of weeks ago, I realized that the caulk in my shower had
begun to deteriorate. I informed my dad that I thought it needed to be repaired and suggested he
call a plumber. His response went a little bit like this Why do I need a plumber? That s an easy fix!

This piece was created by Willie Cole in the year 1993. Willie Cole was born in America in
1995. I found this piece in the contemporary art section. I believe that this piece caught my eye
because of how huge it was, it was exactly 49 x 96 inches. This piece was so huge that it almost
took up an entire wall of the museum. This piece of artwork was made out of oil stick, chalk,
and latex on masonite and wood. To me, it kind of looked like chalk on a chalkboard with
nothing else. The way that the word America is placed out on the canvas gives just enough room
below each letter to write words that begin with each of the letters that spell out the word
America. I was unsure as to why this piece was created the way it was but with further research

The Tort Of Negligence Is The Most Important Area Of...
The tort of negligence is the most important area of modern tort. It is the main tort of concern to
business ventures (O Toole, 2014). Its major aim is to compensate the claimant. It is a breach of a
duty that defendant owes to the plaintiff, resulting in damage to the claimant. It is not related to a
particular act but with a way of acting and is thus harder to define. The basic elements of the tort of
negligence are a legal duty on part of the defendant towards the claimant to exercise care as falls
within the scope of a duty, breach of that duty, and consequential foreseeable damage to the
claimant that can be attributed to the defendant s conduct. Till the nineteenth century, liability in
negligence exists only in recognized cases,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of Home Office v Dorset Yacht Co (1970) Lord Reid appreciated the neighborhood
test and suggested in his Dicta to take it a step forward. This view was subsequently endorsed in
Anns v Merton London Borough Council (1978) where Lord Wilberforce proposed a two stage
approach. The large expansions in the areas of tort took place after the formulation of this test.
This criterion altered the way in which the neighborhood test was used. Previously the courts
had to used it to justify new areas of liability if there were policy reasons for excluding it. In
other words, policy was now to operate as a long stop. The general principle established in Anns
came under heavy criticism both from the judiciary and the academics. The first major criticism
can be fund in the case of Governors of the Peabody Donation Fund v Sir Lindsay Parkinson and
Co Ltd. Lord Keith noted that there was a tendency to treat the test in Anns as if it was of
definitive character. A more fundamental assault was launched on the test in the case of Yuen
Kun Yeu v Attorney General of Hong Kong (1988), in which it was held, that for the future it
should be recognized that the two staged test was not to be regarded as in all circumstances a
suitable guide to the existence of a duty of care. The case of Murphy v Brentwood District Council
(1991) finally cleared the air with regard to this

Reflection Of A Mirror
Where does one see the most real physical you? The best example I could find is a mirror, and your
reflection.
The reflection in a mirror changes the instant life does, it blinks so fast that you can t catch it, it
stares only when you look at it, and turns its back on you the moment you do. The mirror only
holds life when someone stands before it, without oneself it serves no purpose, its one and only
purpose was to tell you, through reflection, what you look like. Without having the little lies or
falsehoods that those nearest you tend to tell you about the way you look.
These falsehoods are often caught, and brought to reality by painters and other reflective surfaces.
Whilst they may be true to the artist or surface, they are not accurate, ... Show more content on

When we look at ourselves in the mirror we must be critical, we must look at ourselves as if it is
not we who is looking back, because we lie to ourselves as well, and sometimes the truth, although
unpleasant might be the only thing to set us back on the right path.
[A] sort of dehiscence opens my body in two, and because between my body looked at and my
body looking, my body touched and my body touching, there is overlapping or encroachment, so
that we may say that the things pass into us as well as we into the things. (Merleau Ponty 1964
/1969: 123)
It is therefore when we look at ourselves without preconceived notions, or small, little
euphemisms, that we learn the most about who we really are. The mirror can reveal so much of
our lives, it can tell you everything that you allow yourself to listen to, it can tell you about the
reason there is sadness or fear in your eyes, or why your skin is rough and full of calluses. Our
bodies are our physical vessels; they merely hold and protect our minds. However, the way in
which you treat your body changes the relationship between the body and the

The Bloody Massacre In Kings Street Analysis
The Bloody Massacre in Kings Street is an engraving done by the great Paul Revere. The
engraving depicts the British lined up alongside an officer giving an order to fire, indicating that
the British soldiers are the aggressors. He goes on to depict smiles on the faces of some of the
soldiers as if to show they are enjoying this brutal murder. The Bostonair was thick with tensions
between the American colonists and the British leading up to March 5, 1770. This tension began to
brew in the early 1760s, as American colonists began to disagree with the British who thought
themselves to be the superiors. As the decade progressed, the British felt themselves losing their
intimidation factor as American colonists ensued peaceful protests in the streets. On March 5th,
1770, British soldiers are at fault for murdering innocent protesters because, they were practicing
carelessness, assuming a position of false superiority, and enacting a last ditch effort to remain in
control.
As to what happened on the evening of March 5th, 1770, there is a plentiful amount of perspectives
that have been studied for centuries. In the decade leading up to the massacre tensions were high,
and as it is put by Wheeler and Becker, the Massachusetts colony became a hotbed of opposition to
imperial policy innovations (81). There was intense strain on the relationship between the British
and the American Colonists. More specifically this rising hostility honed in between the Boston
residents, and

How Hooke’s Law Has Led to Advancements in Respiratory...
Everyday amazing things happen in the human body. One of the things that happens is the way
we take a breath, how we are able to use that breath to sustain life. As a breath is taken in, there s
many different physical and gas laws that take place to allow it to happen. With Hooke s law I
will be discussing what it is, how it relates to respiratory care, and the medical advances it may
include. Hooke s law was named after the man that discovered it in 1660. Robert Hooke was a
17th century physicist who discovered the relationship between the forces applied to a spring and
elasticity. He published his book in 1678 that included the description of his work. Hooke s law
states that any elastic body, like a spring is acted on by a unit of... Show more content on

Once the limits have been reached, there is very little or no change that will occur in the
response to any pressure change. This is figured out by using the equation of change in pressure
and the change in volume. (Jardins, 2013) By using this equation it will help figure out how
compliant the lungs are. This is critical in figuring lung dysfunctions and developing care for a
patient. One of the major diseases that lowers the elastance of the lung and the most preventable
is Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is categorized with an increase of
airway resistance and the loss of lung elasticity. As a restriction in airflow develops, it leads to the
hyperinflation of the alveoli. Some other diseases that are caused by low elastic conditions and is
related to Hooke s law are traumatic chest injuries, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pleural effusion,
acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary edema, and interstitial lung disease. All of the
disease and/or illness s cause the pressure volume curve to slide to the right very quickly and
allows the lung elastic properties to decrease significantly. (Jardins, 2013) Hooke s law is directly
related to the use of mechanical ventilation. If when a patient is placed on a mechanical ventilation,
you can exceed the limitations cause by the lower elastance of the lung. A severe type of
pneumothorax can occur in people who need mechanical assistance to breathe. The action of the

The Media s Ability to Control Our View of the World Essay
With the coming of television and the internet, are we or are we not a more informed community?
(Orwell, 1984) Essentially, this statement requires a profound study in order to determine the
impact of news media ability to control the agenda and ultimately impact our view of the world.
First, let us differentiate these two sources of communication because there is a major difference
between television and internet as a mass media communicating tool. Television focuses more on
broad commercial needs of people and is highly dependent on paid advertisement compared to the
internet, which is closer to very specific needs. In other words, television advertisement and
programming are tailor made to get a larger audience in order ... Show more content on

Therefore the context in which advertisement operates relates to news mass media s ability to
influence people.
The influence of advertisement is proportional to the frequency of repetition of the same message.
People in the advertisement business, often call advertisement by using the word media.
Advertisement or media is achieved by printing newspapers and magazines; or spoken
announcement in television and radiobroadcasts; or display posters on the internet. (Previte, 1999)
There are various rating methods used to estimate the number of people who listen to any
particular advertisement. This is very important in order to establish the cost of the product
advertised. The Sponsor paying for the advertisement is usually required to contract for a series of
programs. These programs have to be acceptable to the media used to display the advertisement.
The advertisers are remunerated accordingly in proportion to the rating the program. Specialized
firms do the rating independently, in order to avoid conflict of interest. The rating determines the
cost of the message and is proportional to the number of people reached. (Morehead, 1966)
The hypothesis formulated in this paper is that news media s ability to control the agenda and
impact our world views is not as important as it seems.

Colonization Of The Great Powers
Has colonization finally ended? Most people would say that it has given the fact that most countries
that were under colonial rule are independent now. However, most Latin American countries are
still dependent on the great powers and are highly underdeveloped due to the enduring adverse
effects colonization established. Colonialization has deprived Latin American countries of their
wealth, freedom and character leaving the decedents of the colonists morally and psychologically
disoriented. Two of the most prominent and enduring dilemmas that colonization left for
descendants of the colonists are an arduous struggle to preserve cultural identity and a sense of
orphanhood/identity crisis. Consequently, these two dilemmas left by... Show more content on

Additionally, this word has dichotomized the Mexican country into the strong and the weak
because Mexicans are either the violator or the violated. After gaining independence from the
colonizer, the Mexicans are left with the enduring question of who am I? . Therefore, a vast
majority of Mexicans always have had a sense of orphanhood because they neglect their past and
they don t want to assimilate to a new culture. Moreover, the idea of being an orphan leads the
Mexicans into solitude to hide behind a mask which gives them a certain identity they must
apprehend by in order to preserve their culture. Furthermore, the themes of orphanhood and betrayal
that are prevalent not only in today s Mexico, but they date back to the period of the Spanish
Conquest where the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes was in power. Most Mexicans associate
the word chingada with the violated mother. In like manner, the Spanish conquest was also a
violation and this could be seen through Dona Malinche. Although she was not raped and gave
herself willingly to Cortez, she was forgotten once Cortez thought she was useless to him. These
actions by Dona Malinche are seen as intolerable because she betrayed her own

Symbols In The Prodigal Son
The change over the time is described through various symbols. The sounds, smells, silences, and
even visual experiences contribute to this change. There is a sense of terror everywhere around.
Sound and silence contrast with each other but both appear as terrorizing in the text. No one
speaks to Malte but he can listen to their silences. He can sense the terror inside them. Past and
present are woven so well one loses track of time like Malte s grandfather. Everything around Malte
that he can sense or see contributes to the situation that Malte faces when he feels threatened.
The text is divided into two parts by a space between the sections 38 and 39. There is no other
specific sign of the division except that space. The first part largely ... Show more content on

However, it has been recreated in a new way. Rilke has transformed the whole story into
something else. The prodigal son is not the wasteful man as depicted in the Bible. He is the one
whom everyone loves, and it makes him feel vulnerable. He does not leave the house because he is
wasteful but because he cannot bear their love. Being loved is being overpowered and possessed. It
suffocates the one who is loved. He cannot be himself or be anything else than what the lover
imagines him to be. On the other hand, if he is the lover, there are immense possibilities for
him. He can be anything he wills because he is the one to control his life and his choices. When
the prodigal son comes to understand this, he is able to transcend himself. He is able to
understand the love of his family, and feels no more threatened by it. He is able to accept
himself as he becomes a changed self. He does not remain the beloved but turns into the lover.
However, he wants to be loved but in a way in which he would not feel suffocated as before.
There is only One who can love him like that because He lets man be and find himself. And only
then, He showers His love upon him. The prodigal son is yet to know himself completely. He is
on the way to find meanings. He is yet becoming. Therefore, there is still time for him to
accomplish what he needs to before He would love

How Did Nathan Hale Influence The Military
Nathan Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut, in 1755 to Richard Hale and Elizabeth Strong,
his parents. In 1768, when he was fourteen years old, he was sent to Yale College with his
brother, Enoch. Nathan was a classmate of a patriot spy. His name was Benjamin Tallmadge.
Nathan graduated with first class honors at the age of 18 and became a teacher. He was the first
in East Haddam and later in New London. After the Revolutionary War began, he joined a
Connecticut militia and was elected first lieutenant. It has been suggested that he was unsure as
to whether he wanted to fight, or whether he was hindered because his teaching contract in New
London did not expire until several months later, in July 1775. On July 4, 1775, Hale received a
letter from his classmate and friend, who had gone to Boston to see the siege for himself. He
wrote to Hale, Was I in your condition, I think the more extensive service would be my choice.
Tallmadge s letter was so inspiring that, several days later, Hale accepted a commission as first
lieutenant in the 7th Connecticut Regiment under Colonel Charles Webb of Stamford. In the next
spring, the army moved to Manhattan to prevent the British from taking the City of New York. In...

fire was later widely thought to have been started by American saboteurs to keep the city from
falling into British hands, though Washington and the Congress had already denied this idea. It has
also been seen that the fire was the work of British soldiers without orders. In the fire s aftermath,
more than 200 American partisans were rounded up by the

The Rolling Stones themselves are among the most important reasons for the dramatic

  • 3. Gentrification Is A General Term For The Expansion Of... Gentrification is a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district, a related increase in rents and property values, and changes in the district s character and culture. The word draws controversy not only in its definition and meaning but also in the impact it has among human social life. It is a practice that is of ancient origin and has withstood the challenges of evolving times and is still practiced in the contemporary world. Proposers and opponents alike of the gentrifying phenomena take advantage of the numerous myths and misconceptions that surround the practice to advance their arguments. Urban planners have rooted for the inclusion of gentrification as one of the pillars of urban growth. With better economic status better roads, better water supply system, better healthcare, reduced criminal activities and an overall uplifting of the quality of life economically it is hard to argue against an overall gain from gentrification. Yet with all this, it has been the source of a lot of widespread animosity between social classes. It has also been blamed for a lot of cultural values erosion with in some instances complete override of the indigenous ways of life that the original inhabitants subscribed to. Green development is an urban development approach that utilizes green infrastructural growth and is aimed at alleviating negative impacts, or ideally have a net positive impact, on the environmentand nearby ecosystems. Wernicke s Aphasia Disorder Essay Wernicke s Aphasia Wernicke s Aphasia Background Aphasia can be defined as a disorder that is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language ( Aphasia n.p.). Wernicke s aphasia is a type of fluent aphasia (with the other type being nonfluent). It is named after Carl Wernickewho described the disorder as an amnesiac disorder characterized by fluent but disordered speech, with a similar disorder in writing, and impaired understanding of oral speech and reading ( Wernicke s n.p.). Wernicke s aphasiacan also be known as sensory aphasia, fluent aphasia, or receptive aphasia. It is a type of aphasia that is caused by damage to Wernicke s area in the brain, in the posterior part of the temporal lobe of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because Wernicke s aphasia is most often brought on by a stroke, this disorder is mostly prevalent in the elderly, however it can be found among children. Men and women are equally affected by Wernicke s aphasia. About 80,000 people get aphasia each year as a result of strokes, and it is believed that about one million people in the United States currently suffer from aphasia ( aphasia n.p.). Prognosis Wernicke s aphasia results not in a loss of speech, but in a loss of speech content. Someone with a less severe form of Wernicke s aphasia may only insert a few incorrect or nonexistent words into their speech, while someone with a severe form may ramble on, using only jargon, meaningless or irrelevant speech with typical intonational patterns. The rate, intonation, articulation, and stress of speech remain normal and unaffected ( Types n.p.). Comprehension and expression of speech tend to be impaired equally. If one ignores the content, the speech of a patient with Wernicke s aphasia would seem normal. They speak in long, well formed sentences, however they contain little to no real meaning (McCaffrey n.p.) Speech often includes verbal, literal, and neologistic paraphasias. Verbal paraphasias include substituting words that can be related to each other, for example, knife for fork. Literal paraphasias include made up words that have similar sounding syllables, for example, bife for knife. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Case Of Barnard V National Dock Labour Board Analysis on unlawful delegation: Unlawful delegation places a restriction on the decision maker to delegate their power to make significant decisions to third party entities or other individuals. It is unlawful to act under dictation of a public body that have been given the power to make certain types of decisions if that body have not been given the statutory power to delegate. This was clearly demonstrated in the case of Ellis v Dubowski where the High Court stated that putting the matter into the hands of a third person or body not possessed of statutory or constitutional authority is ultra vires. The scope of the power to delegate must be considered carefully and the courts will regulate the fairness of the decision and not interfere unreasonably with the decision making process. Another example of unlawful delegation can be seen in the case of Barnard v National Dock Labour Board. This case involved various rules that applied to dockworkers and the appropriate way to dismiss them. Dockworkers felt that the dismissal process was unfair and unlawfully delegated to the wrong decision maker. The dismissal should have been considered by a committee of people and not the port manager. The court held that this was unlawful delegation and the port manager had no statutory power to dismiss these workers. • 12. The Economic And Economic Impact Of The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution, occurring primarily from the 1865 the 1900s, is informally defined as the expeditious development of industry . This was primarily sparked by the development of electricity and it s ability to power machines that would increase the production rate of products. The Industrial Revolution aided in, well, you guessed it... industrial and economic development through the establishment of machinery driven by electricity, the establishment of varying marketing strategies, and utilization of workers. This period eventually led to a more stable economy, however, not without 3 separate periods of economic depression and the division of people by wealth. Politically, big businesses obtained greater power, through varying marketing strategies, and the minimal intervention of government to enforce or propose regulations. Industrialists had leverage, as people of the working class were willing to work for any amount of money. However, labor unions were formed to combat increasing hours and decreasing wages along with strikes. Post Civil War, the rise of industry induced a power shift from aristocrats to industrialists promoting capitalism. In regards to the economy the increased output of products resulted in a greater standard of living as demonstrated by the increase of GDP from 1865 1900 by dollars. Furthermore, because of this unequal division of wealth, a caste system was induced with the lower class being treated poorly, and labor unions formed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Analysis Of Kenneth Grahame s Wind Kenneth Grahame s Wind in the Willows was first thought out as stories for his son Alastair. Because Wind in the Willows was told first to entertain, Kenneth Grahame has broken all the rules. His book is written like a bedtime story, and Grahame allows him self to really have fun with this book. Rather than creating a story with a moral lesson for young children of the Victorian era, Grahame has indulged himself by avoiding realism, focusing on family values and is characters while also dealing with his own fears regarding the status of the class structure in the Victorian era. Elements of oral storytelling are evident in Grahame s Wind in the Willows. His chapters lack detailed physical descriptions of characters, instead opting for the name of the characters to do the trick. All a child needs to know is that Toad looks like and is a toad. By leaving the descriptions so open ended, Grahame allows for his character to be dynamic in their physical attributes. His characters are large enough to ride in a caravan pulled by a horse, but small enough to ______. They are human enough to pass for a washerwoman and to be put into jail, but animalistic in their physic characteristics. Grahame avoids physical descriptions to allow his characters to shift as needed. He cuts out realism, letting his animals be the same approximate size. For there is no good without its opposing force evil. While on the surface the country house is revered as an elegant and extravagant mansion filled with multiple layers of conspicuous consumption, the life of those who have the crucial task of upholding this image is often held up in contrast. For an upstairs, there is a downstairs, and for every well polished... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In placing the country in this time period, Altman was able to employ symbolisms that Morris Weissman, as both an American and a filmmaker, could represent. Indeed, there is a sort of irony in that the murder mystery plot of Gosford Park was exactly what Weissman wanted to capture for his own fictional movie: Charlie Chan in London. The movie begins with the guests and servants assembling at Gosford Park for a shooting party hosted by Sir William McCordle. The housekeeper, Mrs. Wilson, promptly organizes the guests valets and personal maids in their lodgings, also making sure all the luggage and guns are in their proper places. Altman, during the mingling of the guests and servants before dinner, portrays the complicated relationships between and among those in the house. Servants gossip amongst each other while the guests upstairs are constantly flirting and glaring at one another. The following event is the dinner, both for the guests and the servants. In the downstairs, dinner is separated between the kitchen staff and the house staff, due to the disagreements between Mrs. Wilson and the head cook, Mrs. Croft. During this dinner, Morris Weissman s valet, Henry, asks about the history of the servants families. We learn that many of them were also in service, but there were some who ... • 19. Issues Dealing With Time Management Issues in My Workplace MERCY COLLEGE Joshua Louis Abstract This paper will discuss some of the things that I deal with in my workplace as an Environmental Service Aide in a hospital one example of this deals with time management issues. The biggest issues dealing with time management at my job are job quality and completion. This is because staff may try to complete their tasks too quickly in order to meet time restrictions. It is also important when it comes to the scheduling and payroll departments because some of the staff can go over in their hours. For example, the people that are hired part time are getting full time hours to cover staff that may call out or become sick. This can impede our budget and send us into overtime. There are staff training issues as well because of time management. This is a very critical issue because people that are new hires must be trained in their certain roles and if they do not know how to do something correctly they cannot work efficiently at the hospital. Another issue I face in my workplace are communications issues. Communication is the livelihood of an organization and, without it, things will not get done and topics may need to be communicated from one peer to the next for ensure patient care. Organizations and employees may lack the ability to learn, use, and exploit information without good communication practices. The American Indians were known as migratory hunters who followed the buffalo as their main staple. This led to the belief that Indians had no attachment to any particular lands. This belief ignored the facts that some tribes harvested crops and lived in settled villages. Further push to the West to develop the land resulted in the removal of Indians from those lands. As the Civil War closed, the Indians with the white settlers moving into their lands and a main source of livelihood the buffalo threatened with extinction, was faced with a fundamental choice: surrender or fight. Many chose to fight. In 1887 the Dawes Act made it possible for Indians to own their own land. This Act aiming to end tribal life authorized the President to allot portions of land to individual Indians 160 acres to each head of family and 80 acres to others. The land was to be used to establish private farms, and authorized the Secretary of Interior to negotiate with the tribes for purchasing quot;excess quot; lands for non Indian settlement. The real purpose of the act was to further break up the tribes by acquiring more land. Tribes as a whole were not willing to give up any portion of the land, but as individual owners, the Indians were more liable to sell the land. This resulted in the Indian land holdings decreasing from 138 million acres to 48 million half of this being barren land. Assimilation is the process in which one group takes on the ... In the present case, the facility s heat exchanger has a problem, which, according to Turner, may create significant problems. To be precise, two heatexchangers are operating at 95 percent due to a sand blockage on the outlet to the lake water side of the four heat exchangers. After an extensive analysis, engineers in the Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Safety and Licensing Department concluded that the heat exchangers met the minimum cooling requirements set by technical specifications. The Nuclear Safety and Licensing Board also offered a Justification for Continued Operation (JCO) for submission to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. However, Turner is still adamant because she feels other PNSRC members should not approve the JCO because they have not analyzed possible consequences in case one of the heat exchangers fails permanently. From colonial times to the present day, The United States has always been racially contested. However, in the onslaught of WWII these tensions reached new levels and different levels. Americans came to fear the Japanese, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans. While many believed that these racially based fears were unjustified, due to the racial ideas already in place, the violence and aggression that occurred during the war, propaganda, and the government s actions, these fears were not as unrealistic as they may appear today. During the time leading up to the onslaught of the Second World War, the Japanese had never been considered much of a threat on the international stage. The Japanese had stayed unindustrialized and rather primitive until this time. As far as White Europeans were concerned the Japanese were little men . They were not at all anywhere near comparable to the sophisticated and racially, economically, morally, and physically superior Whites of the Western Hemisphere (Dower 173). However, Japanese violence quickly caused these ideas of weak and harmless Japanese to fade away. On December 7, 1941 , the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor, and continued to have victories in Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Wake and Midway Island soon after (Gorn 202) Theses victories revealed the power and violence the Japanese were capable of. I think, then, I may safely conclude, and I firmly believe, that American Slaveryis not only not a sin, but especially commanded by God through Moses, and approved by Christ through his apostles (Faust 175). When reasoning between what is right and wrong, Americans only found that what they were doing was not necessarily evil or wrong just that God permitted it, and also white Americans found slavery to be very significant for their own lives, due to the fact that their way of making money and making a living involved the owning of humans to make themselves the most profitable. In chapter 3, Kozol discusses the inconsistencies in property tax revenues and the problem that the poorer districts aren t getting the same opportunities for education as the more affluent neighborhoods. He says the reason for this is that the poorer districts don t receive as much money as the affluent districts because their property isn t worth as much, therefore they get less money in return. Although this seems to be unfair, there is an opinion that reflects the positive side of this process. In New York, the children in the middle class districts receive an elevated source of education; however children in other areas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Importance Of Masculinity Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning small battles with honor, (Norman Mailer). Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody. For some people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my dad believes that in order to have masculinityhe must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks having to do with landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he says something along the lines of I can fix that in a minute or I ve just got to go get the supplies. He then waits until my mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that we did not give him enough time to get it done. My dad, along with my other malefriends, feels that since he is a male he needs to prove his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. My father went to school at Johnson and Wales University for a degree in criminal justice. Getting a bachelor s degree in criminal justice does not teach one how to fix the caulk in a bathtub; in spite of that, my father attempted this task. A couple of weeks ago, I realized that the caulk in my shower had begun to deteriorate. I informed my dad that I thought it needed to be repaired and suggested he call a plumber. His response went a little bit like this Why do I need a plumber? That s an easy fix! All I have to do is... He then proceeded to explain to me how he believed one would fix the caulk in a shower. San Antonio Museum Of Art Analysis Upon visiting the San Antonio Museum of Art I found nothing about art extremely interesting and I honestly wasn t looking forward to spending a majority of my day looking at art pieces. However, as I approached the museum I was in awe of how beautiful the building was. The way it was placed in downtown San Antonio was absolutely astonishing. As I walked through the huge glass doors I knew I was in for a pleasant surprise. I carefully took the time to examine each artwork and read the descriptions of each one. I found it extremely difficult to find just one I liked and surprisingly I disliked a lot more pieces than I thought I would. This piece was created by Willie Cole in the year 1993. Willie Cole was born in America in 1995. I found this piece in the contemporary art section. I believe that this piece caught my eye because of how huge it was, it was exactly 49 x 96 inches. This piece was so huge that it almost took up an entire wall of the museum. This piece of artwork was made out of oil stick, chalk, and latex on masonite and wood. To me, it kind of looked like chalk on a chalkboard with nothing else. The way that the word America is placed out on the canvas gives just enough room below each letter to write words that begin with each of the letters that spell out the word America. I was unsure as to why this piece was created the way it was but with further research on the piece I realized that Willie Cole created this art piece while sitting in front of the television and writing down words said by the news reporters that contain the first letters of A, M, E, R, I, C, A he also obtained the words by searching through the New York Times. • 40. The Tort Of Negligence Is The Most Important Area Of... The tort of negligence is the most important area of modern tort. It is the main tort of concern to business ventures (O Toole, 2014). Its major aim is to compensate the claimant. It is a breach of a duty that defendant owes to the plaintiff, resulting in damage to the claimant. It is not related to a particular act but with a way of acting and is thus harder to define. The basic elements of the tort of negligence are a legal duty on part of the defendant towards the claimant to exercise care as falls within the scope of a duty, breach of that duty, and consequential foreseeable damage to the claimant that can be attributed to the defendant s conduct. Till the nineteenth century, liability in negligence exists only in recognized cases,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the case of Home Office v Dorset Yacht Co (1970) Lord Reid appreciated the neighborhood test and suggested in his Dicta to take it a step forward. This view was subsequently endorsed in Anns v Merton London Borough Council (1978) where Lord Wilberforce proposed a two stage approach. The large expansions in the areas of tort took place after the formulation of this test. This criterion altered the way in which the neighborhood test was used. Previously the courts had to used it to justify new areas of liability if there were policy reasons for excluding it. In other words, policy was now to operate as a long stop. The general principle established in Anns came under heavy criticism both from the judiciary and the academics. The first major criticism can be fund in the case of Governors of the Peabody Donation Fund v Sir Lindsay Parkinson and Co Ltd. Lord Keith noted that there was a tendency to treat the test in Anns as if it was of definitive character. A more fundamental assault was launched on the test in the case of Yuen Kun Yeu v Attorney General of Hong Kong (1988), in which it was held, that for the future it should be recognized that the two staged test was not to be regarded as in all circumstances a suitable guide to the existence of a duty of care. • 41. Reflection Of A Mirror Where does one see the most real physical you? The best example I could find is a mirror, and your reflection. The reflection in a mirror changes the instant life does, it blinks so fast that you can t catch it, it stares only when you look at it, and turns its back on you the moment you do. The mirror only holds life when someone stands before it, without oneself it serves no purpose, its one and only purpose was to tell you, through reflection, what you look like. Without having the little lies or falsehoods that those nearest you tend to tell you about the way you look. These falsehoods are often caught, and brought to reality by painters and other reflective surfaces. Whilst they may be true to the artist or surface, they are not accurate, ... When we look at ourselves in the mirror we must be critical, we must look at ourselves as if it is not we who is looking back, because we lie to ourselves as well, and sometimes the truth, although unpleasant might be the only thing to set us back on the right path. [A] sort of dehiscence opens my body in two, and because between my body looked at and my body looking, my body touched and my body touching, there is overlapping or encroachment, so that we may say that the things pass into us as well as we into the things. (Merleau Ponty 1964 /1969: 123) It is therefore when we look at ourselves without preconceived notions, or small, little euphemisms, that we learn the most about who we really are. The mirror can reveal so much of our lives, it can tell you everything that you allow yourself to listen to, it can tell you about the reason there is sadness or fear in your eyes, or why your skin is rough and full of calluses. • 42. The Bloody Massacre In Kings Street Analysis The Bloody Massacre in Kings Street is an engraving done by the great Paul Revere. The engraving depicts the British lined up alongside an officer giving an order to fire, indicating that the British soldiers are the aggressors. He goes on to depict smiles on the faces of some of the soldiers as if to show they are enjoying this brutal murder. The Bostonair was thick with tensions between the American colonists and the British leading up to March 5, 1770. This tension began to brew in the early 1760s, as American colonists began to disagree with the British who thought themselves to be the superiors. As the decade progressed, the British felt themselves losing their intimidation factor as American colonists ensued peaceful protests in the streets. On March 5th, 1770, British soldiers are at fault for murdering innocent protesters because, they were practicing carelessness, assuming a position of false superiority, and enacting a last ditch effort to remain in control. As to what happened on the evening of March 5th, 1770, there is a plentiful amount of perspectives that have been studied for centuries. In the decade leading up to the massacre tensions were high, and as it is put by Wheeler and Becker, the Massachusetts colony became a hotbed of opposition to imperial policy innovations (81). One of the things that happens is the way we take a breath, how we are able to use that breath to sustain life. As a breath is taken in, there s many different physical and gas laws that take place to allow it to happen. With Hooke s law I will be discussing what it is, how it relates to respiratory care, and the medical advances it may include. Hooke s law was named after the man that discovered it in 1660. Robert Hooke was a 17th century physicist who discovered the relationship between the forces applied to a spring and elasticity. He published his book in 1678 that included the description of his work. Hooke s law states that any elastic body, like a spring is acted on by a unit of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the limits have been reached, there is very little or no change that will occur in the response to any pressure change. This is figured out by using the equation of change in pressure and the change in volume. (Jardins, 2013) By using this equation it will help figure out how compliant the lungs are. This is critical in figuring lung dysfunctions and developing care for a patient. One of the major diseases that lowers the elastance of the lung and the most preventable is Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is categorized with an increase of airway resistance and the loss of lung elasticity. As a restriction in airflow develops, it leads to the hyperinflation of the alveoli. Some other diseases that are caused by low elastic conditions and is related to Hooke s law are traumatic chest injuries, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary edema, and interstitial lung disease. All of the disease and/or illness s cause the pressure volume curve to slide to the right very quickly and allows the lung elastic properties to decrease significantly. (Jardins, 2013) Hooke s law is directly related to the use of mechanical ventilation. If when a patient is placed on a mechanical ventilation, you can exceed the limitations cause by the lower elastance of the lung. A severe type of pneumothorax can occur in people who need mechanical assistance to breathe. The action of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. The Media s Ability to Control Our View of the World Essay With the coming of television and the internet, are we or are we not a more informed community? (Orwell, 1984) Essentially, this statement requires a profound study in order to determine the impact of news media ability to control the agenda and ultimately impact our view of the world. First, let us differentiate these two sources of communication because there is a major difference between television and internet as a mass media communicating tool. Television focuses more on broad commercial needs of people and is highly dependent on paid advertisement compared to the internet, which is closer to very specific needs. Therefore the context in which advertisement operates relates to news mass media s ability to influence people. The influence of advertisement is proportional to the frequency of repetition of the same message. People in the advertisement business, often call advertisement by using the word media. Advertisement or media is achieved by printing newspapers and magazines; or spoken announcement in television and radiobroadcasts; or display posters on the internet. (Previte, 1999) There are various rating methods used to estimate the number of people who listen to any particular advertisement. This is very important in order to establish the cost of the product advertised. The Sponsor paying for the advertisement is usually required to contract for a series of programs. These programs have to be acceptable to the media used to display the advertisement. The advertisers are remunerated accordingly in proportion to the rating the program. Specialized firms do the rating independently, in order to avoid conflict of interest. The rating determines the cost of the message and is proportional to the number of people reached. (Morehead, 1966) The hypothesis formulated in this paper is that news media s ability to control the agenda and impact our world views is not as important as it seems. The ... Rilke has transformed the whole story into something else. The prodigal son is not the wasteful man as depicted in the Bible. He is the one whom everyone loves, and it makes him feel vulnerable. He does not leave the house because he is wasteful but because he cannot bear their love. Being loved is being overpowered and possessed. It suffocates the one who is loved. He cannot be himself or be anything else than what the lover imagines him to be. On the other hand, if he is the lover, there are immense possibilities for him. He can be anything he wills because he is the one to control his life and his choices. When the prodigal son comes to understand this, he is able to transcend himself. He is able to understand the love of his family, and feels no more threatened by it. He is able to accept himself as he becomes a changed self. He does not remain the beloved but turns into the lover. However, he wants to be loved but in a way in which he would not feel suffocated as before. There is only One who can love him like that because He lets man be and find himself. And only then, He showers His love upon him. The prodigal son is yet to know himself completely. After the Revolutionary War began, he joined a Connecticut militia and was elected first lieutenant. It has been suggested that he was unsure as to whether he wanted to fight, or whether he was hindered because his teaching contract in New London did not expire until several months later, in July 1775. On July 4, 1775, Hale received a letter from his classmate and friend, who had gone to Boston to see the siege for himself. He wrote to Hale, Was I in your condition, I think the more extensive service would be my choice.
