3. Introduction to Light
• Visible Light is electromagnetic radiation within a
certain portion of the electromagnetic spectrum which
is visible to the human eye and is responsible for the
sense of sight.
• Light ranges in wavelength from 400 nm on the violet
end to 700 nm on the red end of the visible spectrum.
4. Activity 1: Lights and their Spectra
Spectroscopy is the interaction of electromagnetic radiation and
matter, which sorts light by wavelength.
• Objective: construct a Spectroscopy and To help us
better understand what colors are present and
spectrum of various light.
• Procedure:
Cut a circle from black construction paper, and cut a
slit in the center. after this connect it to one side of
the tube.
Cut another circle from a CD and stick it to the other
end of the tube.
Observing spectrum by look at different light sources
5. Activity 1: Lights and their Spectra
• Results
• Conclusion
Each chemical element has a unique light spectrum.
Source Spectra Spectra Type
Sunlight Continuous
Incandescent Continuous
Fluorescent Discrete
LED Continuous bands
Red Light Red Spectrum!
6. Activity 2: Observing Diffraction
• Objective: learn about diffraction.
Procedure
Step 1-we placed some wooden blocks in the water
tank
Step 2-we produced some patterns in the water tank
which resulted on making waves
7. Activity 2: Observing Diffraction
• Results: we observed that when we used
barrier (wooden blocks) the water waves
didn't pass, but when made a small passage
in the barrier the water waves passed. these
observation is a good example of diffractions
• Conclusion: this activity has helped us to
observe the diffraction and we learned that
the diffraction happens when any object
blocks the way of a wave.
8. Activity 3: Observing Interference
• Objective: understanding of waves
types are produced by wave
interference
• Procedure: We tied the thread to the
wave generator and then we powered
on the wave generator after that the
wave generator started producing
waves that interfere with each other
and each time we Lengthening the
thread the waves will increase which
left us with nodes and anti-nodes
9. Activity 3: Observing Interference
• Results: Interference occurs when two waves traveling toward
each other arrive at the same point at the same time
• Conclusion: when a transverse wave is launched on a string, a
reflected wave is produced at the other end the primary and
reflected waves interfere with each other to produce a standing
wave, In some places along the string, the waves interfere
constructively and at other places destructively
10. Activity 4: Observing Iridescence
• Procedure:
Step 1: Place some liquid soap in a deep
plate.
Step 2: Make a bubble
Step 3: Watch it
• Objective: To observe Iridescence and the color
change that takes place just before the bubble pops
11. Activity 4: Observing Iridescence
• Results:
• Conclusion:
we saw different colors in different angles depending
on the position of the viewer and the light source
12. Product Idea
Title: QATAR-LIGHT MADE HEAVEN
Introduction and Rationale:
• Our project has been selected as the light and its application has
been expanded rapidly for the daily use and applications.
• This project is made to assist and comply to one of Qatar 2030
vision that related to conservation of energy and follow LEED and
Qatar sustainability assessment system (QSAS) principles and
requirements.
• This is project is based on the science and study of the physics of
light.
Aim of the work (objectives)
• This project will demonstrate the light and its unique
characteristics to be applied on a public park walkways, signage,
trees, play areas to focus on each recommended area.
13. QATAR-LIGHT MADE HEAVEN
Hypothesis:
RESEARCH QUESTION
• Can the basic lights (RGB) used as a color code to
represent various facilities within the park?
Hypothesis
• Light can be converted into many colors with
different wavelength through specific devices to
make the paths easier.
14. About what we learned in al-Bairaq
Al-Bairaq taught us about light and it’s properties in
the Nano-world.
Problems that we faced in our workshop:
1-we couldn’t find the recommended materials.
2- we had the lack of time management.
How did we beat these problems?
First : we used alternative materials to proceed with
the procedure.
Second : we worked harder and tried to be more
efficient through the time we were given.
15. Explanation of our project idea
what is it used for?
• How did we come up with our idea ?
We thought of our people who always try to search for
some specific places so we used colors as easy codes to
show what they are looking for, so we used lights
sources that has colors to use it as a code of each
recommended places.
What is it used for ?
our project is used for showing people how to find
whatever they are looking for in a more efficient way
with less time wasted in an easier way which is going
to be using lights on each place with different type of
colors.
16. QATAR-LIGHT MADE HEAVEN
Results
• Each Parking facility has been assigned with a specific
light color so the visitors can identify them easily
specially at night.
• For example: walk ways are colored with white,
clinics, police station, fire department are colored
with red, mosque with green, play areas with yellow
… etc
17. QATAR-LIGHT MADE HEAVEN
Recommendations:
• It is strongly recommended to standardize the parks in
QATAR to be identified based on the color code for
each facility, building … etc.
• It is recommended that such general facilities (i.e
parks, shopping malls, driveways, parking area) to be
color coded, this code shall be a standard in QATAR so
it will facilitate the identification so the end user can
reach the destination point easily.
18. Conclusions
(Overall)
1- our goal behind this research is helping people with
different abilities and ages to find places and identify
them easier.
2- using the color coding idea by our dear government
would not only help people find places easier but doing
it in a particular way can help us keep Qatar green. By
having clearer marks for the areas we can reduce gas
emission, and reduce the traffic in the roads.
19. Acknowledgment
Many thank to our teachers, school and AL-Bairaq
team, Qatar University for supporting us during our
journey in Al-Bairaq project.
Also we are would like thank the sponsors who
gave us the opportunity to participate in Al-Bairaq
project, create and innovate.
