Mango Grey Blight is caused by the fungus Pestalotiopsis mangiferae. It causes brown spots on mango leaves that enlarge and turn dark brown with black dots in the center. Small brown spots also appear on green fruits that enlarge with many black dots. The fungus produces septate mycelia and acervuli fruiting bodies. Management includes removing infected plant parts and spraying with fungicides like copper oxychloride or mancozeb.

Other names: Pestalotiopsis Leaf Spot of mango
Report: First reported by Hennings in Taiwan at
1909.

3. Symptoms
• Brown spots develop on the margin and at the
tip of the leaf lamina.
• They increase in size and become dark brown.
• Black dots appear on the spots which are
acervuli of the fungus.
• On mature green fruits, small brown spots
appear with greyish white center which later
turns to bigger lesions with large number of
acervuli seen as black dots.

5. Pathogen
• The fungus produces septate mycelia and acervulus as an
asexual fruiting body.
• Conidia are 5-celled, oblong to clavate or clavate to fusiform,
colored cells are 15-16 micro meter long, upper two of them
slightly darker than the lowest olivaceaus colored cells, septa
and walls sometimes black and will have long pedicel; setulae
3, coarse, widely divergent and 19-26 micron long.

8. Mode of spread:
Both the primary and secondary spread is
through air borne conidia.
Favourable conditions:
Heavy infection is noticed during the monsoon
when the temperature is 20-25°C and high
humidity.

9. Management
• Remove and destroy infected plant parts.
• Spraying of copper oxychloride 0.25%,
Mancozeb 0.25% or Bordeaux mixture 1.0%.
• Carbendazim 0.1% after heavy rains followed
by wettable sulphur 0.2% before flowering
controls the disease.
