Disease name: Papaya leaf curl
Pathogen name: Papaya leaf curl virus (PLCV)
Papaya leaf curl was first reported in Tamil
Nadu in 1939.
3. Systematic position
Domain : Virus ( DNA virus)
Family Geminiviridae
Genus : Begomovirus
Species : Papaya leaf curl virus
4. SYMPTOMS
• The most prominent symptoms are the rolling
of the leaves downward and inward in the form
of an inverted cup and the thickening of veins.
• Sometimes all the leaves at the top of the
plant are affected by these symptoms.
• In advanced stages of the disease, defoliation
takes place and the growth of the plant is
arrested.
5. • The production of flower and fruits are
compromised.
• Fruits will be detorated in shape and fall
immaturely.
8. Prevention
Immediately after the disease is noticed, the
plant must be uprooted and destroyed.
Avoid growing alternative hosts such as
tomato and tobacco near papaya.
Spray insecticides for vector control.
9. Management
Biological:
• Spray 1% oil emulsion.
Chemical:
• Soil application of Carbofuran (1 kg a.i. /ha) at
the time of sowing.
• 4-5 foliar sprays of Dimethoate (0.05%) or
Metasystox (0.02%) or Nuvacron (0.05%) at
an interval of 10 days effectively controls the
whitefly population.
