PAPAYA LEAF CURL VIRUS
Host: Carica papaya L. (papaya)
Disease name: Papaya leaf curl
Pathogen name: Papaya leaf curl virus (PLCV)
 Papaya leaf curl was first reported in Tamil
Nadu in 1939.
Systematic position
Domain : Virus ( DNA virus)
Family Geminiviridae
Genus : Begomovirus
Species : Papaya leaf curl virus
SYMPTOMS
• The most prominent symptoms are the rolling
of the leaves downward and inward in the form
of an inverted cup and the thickening of veins.
• Sometimes all the leaves at the top of the
plant are affected by these symptoms.
• In advanced stages of the disease, defoliation
takes place and the growth of the plant is
arrested.
• The production of flower and fruits are
compromised.
• Fruits will be detorated in shape and fall
immaturely.
PLCV Affected plant

Mode of spread
 Vector: Silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
 Infected seeds, seedling and grafting material.
© IARC
Prevention
 Immediately after the disease is noticed, the
plant must be uprooted and destroyed.
 Avoid growing alternative hosts such as
tomato and tobacco near papaya.
 Spray insecticides for vector control.
Management
Biological:
• Spray 1% oil emulsion.
Chemical:
• Soil application of Carbofuran (1 kg a.i. /ha) at
the time of sowing.
• 4-5 foliar sprays of Dimethoate (0.05%) or
Metasystox (0.02%) or Nuvacron (0.05%) at
an interval of 10 days effectively controls the
whitefly population.
