Ancient Chinese Contributions
Ancient Chinese Contributions

HUM 111 World Cultures I
November 29, 2012
The Ancient Chinese culture has contributed in many ways to the way of life today as
we know it. Upon completion of this paper, I will have identified eight to ten useful
inventions or contributions that are used in the world today. Some of these inventions
include the compass, gunpowder, row planting, deep drilling, and toilet paper and so on.
Within those eight to ten inventions, I will choose four that I believe are the most
innovative.
Row Planting (Feudal period 6th Cent BC)
The Chinese started planting crops in rows sometime in the 6th century BC. This allows
the crops to grow stronger and faster. It facilitates ... Show more content on

It s assumed the discovery of occurred sometime earlier, since Zeng describes three
different gunpowder mixtures and the Chinese used it for signal flares before
appropriating it for military use in rudimentary grenades. Over time, we realized that
metals added to the mixtures created brilliant colors in gunpowder explosions and
modern day fireworks were born! It also makes a handy explosive for projectiles like
bullets. (Josh Clark)
Paper
Once language begins to develop, though, humans wrote on anything that would stand
still long enough. Clay tablets, bamboo, papyrus and stone were only a few of the
early writing surfaces. Things changed once the Chinese, specifically a man named Cai
Lun, invented the prototype for modern paper. Before Cai s breakthrough, the Chinese
wrote on thin strips of bamboo and lengths of silk, but in AD 105, he created a mixture
of wood fibers and water and pressed it onto a woven cloth. The weave in the cloth
allowed the moisture in the pulpy mixture to seep out, resulting in rough paper. (Josh
Clark)
Toilet Paper (Sui Dynasty: 581 618 AD) As noted above, paper was an early invention of
China. One of the first recorded accounts of using hygienic paper was
Rhetorical Analysis Of 1984 By George Orwell
In this excerpt from 1984, by George Orwell, Winston Smith, a worker for the ministry
of truth, has been caught for committing a thought crime and is being taken to room
101 for punishment. During the passage, Smith desperately tries to escape his
punishment. Through the use of rhetorical devices such as repetition, imagery, and
details, the tone of urgency is revealed In the excerpt, Orwell uses the rhetorical device
of repetition in order to create suspense. For example, right before the rats are going to
attack, Winston says, Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don t care what you
do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me! The
repetitive screams for help from Winston reveals the tone as he is frantically begging
for mercy. Another example of repetition is used is when Orwell writes, To think, to
think, even with a split second left to think was the only hope This reveals the tone as it
reveals Winston only has a split second to save himself from the rats, and he must be
able to think fast in order to do it.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when Orwell describes, The circle of the mask was large enough now to
shut out the vision of anything else. The wire door was a couple of hand spans from
his face. The rats knew what was coming now. This creates the tone as the rats are now
closing in on Winston and are preparing to attack, which leaves him little time left
before he must face his fear. In addition, another example is when the book says
Winston heard a succession of shrill cries which appeared to be occurring in the air
above his head. But he fought furiously against his panic. This displays the tone as
Winston has now begun to panic after hearing the cries of the rats above him. As he
desperately fights against his punishment, the tone of urgency is
Conspiracy In Othello And Catiline
The Conspiracy of Catiline and Cicero s Consulship
Cicero had many tough decisions during his life. One of these was what to do about
Catiline and his conspirators. Cicero had made a law that prohibited people from running
for legislatures to not be able to bribe voters in order to get elected. Catiline, while
running for a position in the legislature, knew that this law had been partially made
because of him. Catiline wanted to obtain consulship and overthrow the Roman
government. Catiline, at first, just wanted to kill the two consuls, but then he decided to
kill all of the Senate. Although Catiline was planning on killing the men running the
government, he still tried to get legitimately elected. Catiline recruited other conspirators

Cicero and the Senate had to decide what the punishment for the conspirators should
be. Multiple people had different ideas about the punishment. Caesar wanted all of the
conspirators goods to be taken and put the conspirators into boroughs. Silanus wanted
all the conspirators to be killed, since they were trying to destroy the Republic and
wage war against the country. Cato wanted them to see what the punishment for other
crimes similar to this one would be hoping this would discourage conspiracies in the
future. Cicero and the Senate decided to kill some of the men while also letting some
of them live. This decision was probably the most agreeable and best decision, but it
also caused Cicero problems for his own safety and the safety of the
Photographic Essay On Remembrance Day
Outline
My goal for this photographic essay is to capture the emotion and historical significance
surrounding Remembrance Day. I intend on attending a number of events this week,
including the Ghost Soliders Platoon, Sappers and Shrapnel Art Exhibition, Field of
Remembrance and the main ceremony featuring the last post. At these events I will
take a large amount of photos from different angles, in an effort to capture the grave
feeling of this event in a single picture. I will use a close up shot to reveal the details in
the face of a soldier, a low angle shot to uncover the shape of a well known statue and a
combination of wide and high angle shots overlooking the poppies at both the field out
the front of Pulteney and North Terrace. Through a... Show more content on

And just like the cliche, it does truly feel like he was a baby only yesterday. What I
cannot even begin to imagine is his life if he were at war or was directly affected by it.
The title of this piece is called Lost in the woods , and you only need one glance at the
baby camouflage jumpsuit to feel your heart pang. This photo didn t need any special
lighting or filters. And despite the dark meaning hidden in the khaki bassinet sheet, this
image is perfect the way it is, centre third, close medium shot.

Every year, on the 11th day of the 11th Month at 11 am we pay our respects. We do not
mock those who returned with disabilities, we won t turn away from those suffering
now, and we will never, nor will we ever forget those who are gone. Unlike the
previous photos, this image isn t positioned in any particular way or with any kind of
purposeful lighting. It is instead as raw as it gets, a picture of a shrapnel barrel with 4
very significant words, that provide everything you need to know about the aftermath of

The Role Of Women s Suffrage In The United States
Women, for a long time, were one of the most undervalued assets essential to life in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. Throughout recorded history, women have been treated as
less than men. They have been viewed as simply a vessel for reproduction or a maid to
do housework and prepare meals for her husband. In many ancient cultures and some
cultures today women are viewed merely as possessions. Surprisingly, women were even
oppressed in the United States, which was founded upon freedom and equality. Women
have been struggling to shed the chains of motherhood and be recognized as equal
human beings for as long as written records have been around. The unequal treatment of
women was often based on religion or tradition. The United States did not... Show more

The supporters of inequality often feared changing old traditions. Some of the
inequality had its base rooted in religion. In the United States the predominant religion
was Christianity. In the Bible, the man is supposed to be the breadwinner of the
family, while the woman oversees all the household duties. People latched onto this
idea which meant if you attacked that idea, you were attacking their religious beliefs.
What these people did not take into consideration is that when the Bible was written
times were different. When using historical accounts to develop ones beliefs you must
take into consideration that life may not be the same as it was when the event
occurred. In Bible times, every society was one hundred percent agrarian. This means
when the Bible talks about men being responsible for all the work and providing for
his family, it is referring to the physical labor that must go into producing food and
running a farm. The Bible, for the most part, just divides the work of having a family
based on individual strengths. Men are biologically inclined to be physically stronger
and women are biologically inclined to nurture and be more gentle. The division of the
work in that way made sense during ancient times. The Bible does not say that women
absolutely cannot do work if they want to. It certainly does not encourage discrimination
of women who do
Jeffrey s Underlying Themes In The Film Blue Velvet
In many motion pictures, underlying themes and values are often hidden amongst
more superficial demonstrations and ideas. In the film, Blue Velvet, Jeffrey the
protagonist is trying to solve a crime while at the same time he is really exploring this
other world of explicit sexuality that is opened by his new found desire towards
Dorothy Vallen, a mysterious and interesting woman that has ties to the crime. This new
desire that Jeffrey has towards Dorothy is noted throughout the film as he slowly loses
a grip on who he is. The idea of Jeffrey losing his grip of who he really is, is illustrated
when he lies to Dorothy to get into her apartment, steals her keys, and then later sneaks
into her apartment and watches her undress. In the beginning... Show more content on

He then got on top of her while Jeffrey hid in the closet. Jeffrey hiding in the closet
illustrates the idea of Frank being the monster in this situation. Frank took the role of
the monster because Jeffrey fear towards Frank shifted to a desire to be in Frank s
position. As Jeffrey watched Frank take advantage of Dorothy his body language
showed signs of both fear and arousal. His eyes never left sight of Frank, his breathing
was sporadic and he remained silent he entire time. Jeffrey saw Frank s actions as a
temporary break from reality. Leading up to this Jeffrey never saw someone like Frank
before, Frank s sexual actions towards Dorothy symbolize the linking of monstrosity
with the forbidden, thus leading to temporary escape from reality in the eyes of Jeffrey.
In turn, the film Blue Velvet demonstrates the idea of there being a grey lie between sex
and violence, illustrating thatsex and violence are interwoven. This idea is explored
through the actions of Jeffrey, Dorothy, and Frank throughout the movie. Their actions
in the film demonstrate the idea that fear from a monster acts as a temporary escape
from reality in the form of a fantasy. This fantasy in turn shifts the idea of fear towards a
monster into the idea of desire towards a
Edwin Ramsey Research Paper
Some days are just plain bad. For 1st Lieutenant Edwin Ramsey of the 26th Cavalry
Regiment (PS), Friday, January 16, 1942, was one such day. Having just finished a
grueling reconnaissance mission with G Troop Ramsey was supposed to take his
men to the rear area for rest. But as young lieutenants are prone to do, he spoke before
thinking, volunteering to lead another unit to a village called Morong where things
really went to hell. Morong, a collection of huts hovering around a small church a
quarter of the way down Bataan s western cost. It was where the local highway bridges
the Batalan River. The only defensive barrier between the Japanese and the Filipino
American Forces. In one of those didn t you read the memo moments the village and
its bridge were left unguarded. Ramsey s unit was given the honor of fixing someone
else s mistake. A composite unit of what was left of the 26th Regiment s E and F Troops
was ordered to secure the village.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While briefing the composite unit commander Ramsey heard himself volunteer to help

blue shirts had been replaced by M1911 automatic pistols, an improved version of the
WW1 era tin hat, and khaki uniforms. The guys in khaki weren t Americans. The PS
after the regiment s name stood for Philippine Scouts, U.S. Army units raised in the
Philippines, led by Americans and staffed by Filipinos. 1st Platoon was about a quarter
hour ahead of the main body when it entered Morong and Ramsey s day took another
turn for the worse. Japan s 122nd Infantry Regiment was already there. The main element
huddled at the bridge, waiting for the infantry that was already in the village to sound the
Cuban Embargo Case Study
The economic interest of the Unites States greatly outweighs the benefit of maintaining a
Cuban Embargo and should be the motive for its repeal. The intent of the original
embargo was to prevent the Castro regime from assuming power and to deter foreign
investment. Both of these initiatives have failed and the consequences of a decades old
embargo land squarely on the general population of Cubaand the business interests of the
Unites States. American business have much to gain with the removal of the Cuban
Embargo. Business opportunities abound in the agriculture market, banking sector,
medical field, and construction industries. The effect of the Cuban Embargo should be
understood in order to appreciate the opportunities its repeal

It has its foundation in the theory of variation (understanding common and special
causes) and was one of the key tools developed by Walter Shewhart in the 1920s. The
primary tools used in SPC are graphical, including Pareto analysis, control charts and run
charts. It is crucial for QI teams and researchers to understand variation in data to avoid
making errors in interpretation, though in practice, many QI teams do not have sufficient
biostatistical training to be able to interpret their data with confidence. The practical
power of SPC is that people who are not statisticians can bring significant statistical rigor
to their quantitative data in an intuitive format by understanding just a few simple,
pattern based rules to distinguish special cause variation (i.e., signals) from common
cause variation (i.e., noise). Distinguishing special and common cause variation is
critical to understanding whether changes you are making result in improvement (i.e., is
there a signal of change present?). Among all of the SPC tools, control charts have the
most power to distinguish common from special cause variation. Control charts plot data
over time (time on the x axis) and include a measure of central tendency (centerline,
mean) and upper and lower control limits (plus/minus 3 sigma of the mean). The control
limits reflect the natural variation in the data or the extent of the
History Of The Ripper s Victimatology
The list of the Ripper s victimology is rather interesting. It consisted of women on
London s lowest level of hierarchy with their deaths only affecting friends and family
(Begg, Paul, Evans 1). A multitude of the victims were in ill condition, e.g from
sexually transmitted diseases or an unhealthy addiction to alcohol. They roamed the
night looking for buying customers, unaware of their untimely fate with a serial killer
(Rubinstein 1). The East End was overcrowded with waste littering the roads and the
only way to earn a decent wage through illegal means (Johnson 1). However, poverty
was glaringly different between the genders. Usually, employed women worked in
factories for a few years, allowing them to save a small reserve of pounds... Show more

Fat Problem In America
Did you know that two thirds of the adult American population is overweight or even

of today s fast paced society many people have developed a bad habit of eating

healthproblems sometimes even leading to death.
America s weight problem is steadily growing and more and more people are becoming
obese each year. Many people with strong cultural backgrounds are obese because of the

Kantianism Vs Utilitarianism
Would utilitarianism be more beneficial to our society than kantianism? Utilitarianism is
based on the principle of maximizing utility through the available set of actions.
Kantianism also known as deontological theories, is the principle to treat everyone
respectfully as a means to an end and not a mere of means. Utilitarianismis on the basis
of actions available that will produce the most utility. For an act to be right it must
maximize utility. An example would be if you had baked brownies for a party and
during the car ride there you ate them all as an egoist would; however you may have
put your personal desires aside and waited to give them to all your friends as a utilitarian
would. Utilitarianism is a selfless approach whereas kantianism... Show more content on

Although, a colleague of mine chose utilitarianism to live by because all in all the
most utility would be maximized. However, kantianism does not budge under
pressure whereas utilitarian beliefs can bend if it means maximizing the most utility
such as; if I promise to protect you and the best way to protect you is to lie then I
according to utilitarianism it is okay to lie. Is that to say that kantianism is the more
practical choice because no moral rules are being bent. There is general sense of right
and wrong from person to person but ultimately it is just that, a personal decision.
Morals are not embedded into our being. Moral justification coincides with society
norms and values. Kantianism follows our american precepts such as tell the truth ,
keep your promises , do unto others as you would have them do unto you and lastly
two wrongs do not make a right these phrases hold some vitality to them. These are
drilled into us as children but somehow manage to be lost in translation as we get older.
In reality, we tend to have utilitarian habits such as if I am a teenager and my mother
asks me whether I ve drunk alcohol before. I may lie to keep my mother happy if that
decision maximizes most
Erich Remarque s Magnum Of All Quiet On The Western
Front
The First World War, or the ill named War to End all Wars, was one that brought hell to
Earth and mankind. For the first time in history, industry had appeared to make killing
efficient. In static trenches, young men from around the world were killed by artillery
kilometres away, poison gas, and disease. All nations in the conflict experienced the
creation of a Lost Generation; men who lost their lives, limbs, or the ability to live a
normal life. Paul Baumer, the young German protagonist of All Quiet on the Western
Frontbecomes a member of this sad generation through his sad journey to the ultimate
elixir, death. In Erich Remarque s magnum opus All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul
Baumer is faced by various emotionally jarring tests that... Show more content on

feeling for one another. We can hardly control ourselves when our glance lights on the
form of some other men. We are insensible, dead men, who through some trick, some
dreadful magic, are still able to run and to kill (Remarque 55). This moment
demonstrates the damage that has occurred. Paul already considered himself a dead
man, a men that has lost all humanity. It is this moment that is the first step in the hero
s slow demise, in which he loses all joy and hope. It is impossible for, in the conditions
described, to be able to return home; death becomes the only elixir. Hence, it only
takes two more events in his short life for Paul Baumer to realise this elixir. After the
initial French Offensive, Paul is given time to recover, getting leave and additional

News On Foreign News And Its Impact On Society s View On...
Thinking of a question related to news was difficult because I am a journalism major
and news is a hot topic within my major. News is a very broad statement and can mean
many different things. It also brings all kinds of questions to mind. Originally I went
with a broad question that later turned into a very specific topic making the research
much easier. My first question was, How does news based in the United States effect
societies views on other countries? How does foreign news affecttheir societies view on
the United States? By trying to find simple research on this through the MU Library, I
was quick to find that in order to write a successful research paper it is vital to have a
more specific question to get the answers you want. I was not finding specific research
that included specific information on foreign news and its societal affects.
After some struggles, one article popped out to me about news on foreign countries and
their economy so I decided to look at how the positive and negative news written about
a foreign country later effects that economy. My question then became, How does an
article written in a specific country affect the economy of a foreign nation? For
example, if a news program based in the United States were to write an article about
China, how would that article truly affect the economy of China. It has been seen that
news can change the perspective of the way people see the world and all that goes on
among the economic leaders. By

The First Creation Myth Is The Hindu Version Of Creation
The first creation myth is the Hindu version of creation, and it is about the sacrifice of
the Man (Purusha), the man with a thousand heads, eyes, and feet. The Man himself is
all this, whatever has been and whatever is to be and he is the creator and the one
creation comes from. He is sacrificed by the gods and his body makes up the earth. The
Man s mouth was the brahmin, his arms were made into the nobles, his two thighs were
the populace, and from his feet the servants were born. The moon was born from his
mind; the sun was born from his eye. After, his mouth came Indra (4) and Agni, and from
his vital breath the wind (Vyu) was born. Then his navel the atmosphere was born; from
his head the heavenemerged. From his two feet came the earth, and the expanses of the
sky from his ear.
The second creation story is the story from the Bible, which is Christians version of
creation. On the first day God (the creator) created light, the second day God created
waters, the atmospheric water and the oceanic water. On the third day God created dry
land and vegetation, and on the forth day he created the sun and the moon and the stars
and planets. On the fifth day God created water creatures and birds, and on the sixth
day he created land animals and man. God creates all this out of nothing and it takes
him six days. He creates all this for the man to rule over and to multiply and for men to
in turn praise him.
The third creation myth is from the Huainanzi and it tells of the great
Brand Items And The Purchaser Basic Leadership Process
INTRODUCTION In the modern society brands not only signify the product or
company but also have a strong relationship with perceived quality, consumers life
style, social class, taste etc. The motivation behind this study is to frame a more
profound thought of what impact a brand name can have, when individuals go for
buying, pick the items between various brands, particularly private vehicle like car.
Furthermore, this concentrate additionally tries to investigate the connection between
various brand items and the purchaser basic leadership process. This study has been
conducted through literature study as well as questionnaire directed survey. Simple
random sampling procedure has been used to determine sampling frame and size and
a convenience sample of sixty respondents of different age groups, income and
occupation have been considered for the survey. The collected data were analysed to
comply with the objectives and also to draw conclusions. From the study it is
discovered that when consumer purchases a car, brand names do effect his/her choice.
The study also reveals that branded cars have a excessive place in consumer mind,
when customers go for purchasing a car; they prefer to purchase a familiar branded car.
Customers would prefer not to attempt new or obscure marked cars in light of the fact
that they have very little data about the slighter known brand. INDUSTRY

1.0 The current multi channel environment
A report by the Information Technology consultancy company Chateris recently cited the
most popular four retail channels in the UK (See Figure 1, below). These included the
internet which dominates sales channel for retailers at the moment (Chateris, UK Multi

Also, internet confident businesses are offering more valuable goods and services at
lower costs. Now with the advent of eBay, many people are assuming the role of seller,
shipping merchandise directly to the individual eliminating the need for a physical store.
Individuals can have a successful business selling goods of larger companies without
having to carry stock.
Supplier power is higher when buyers have fewer choices as to what they can buy. As
mentioned previously the amount of suppliers has increased. All an individual has to do
is form and agreement to sell products for the company. Customers can allow a
webmaster such as Amazon to earn money by recommending products from others. This
increases supplier offerings.
Threat of substitute products or services is high when there are many product
alternatives. The internet allows this as the customer can substitute their product by
purchasing from companies overseas where labour, services or products can be cheaper,
but of comparable quality.
Threat of new entrants is high when it is easy for new competition to enter the market
and now smaller businesses can start up on the internet for little money and make a lot of
money. Rivalry among competitors is high when competition is more intense within
industries and additional channels can intensify. Online book shops and catalogue
companies are a good example. Amazon.com and borders.com are very competitive.
However, there are many smaller niche

Enlightened Absolutism In The 18th Century
In late eighteenth century Germany, the concept of enlightened absolutism was
predominately absent. Although it may have appeared that monarchs of the time were
using personal power to improve the lives of their subjects, monarchs were doing quite
the opposite.
Robert S. Taylor, a professor of political science at the University of California Davis,
believes such rulers only used enlightened ways to get what they desired. Using German
philosopher of the enlightenment era Immanuel Kant as a supporter, Taylor declares:
While [Kant s] support for enlightened absolutism was sincere, he believed that such rule
was enlightened only insofar as it was ultimately self extinguishing, a process made
possible by the myopic self interest of the monarch ... Show more content on

Acquiring land by the division of Poland would benefit Frederick immensely in ways of
adding to personal wealth and land acquisition. He does not state that this gain would be
the best for Prussia or the German people as a whole. Instead he concerns himself with
personal profit. Additionally, the separation of Poland is not considered an enlightened
action. Ultimately, this situation reinforces the idea that monarchs of the time were in
favor of ruling to benefit themselves and not for their
Finger Print Essay
Finger print scanners for school libraries
Introduction
A finger print is unique for each individual. Using finger prints when students are
borrowing books from the library will ensure that a student does not use a fake name,
and this will reduce the number of books the library losses. The finger print scanner will
be connected to the school s library system, and will automatically populate the fields
once the student s finger print is read. The finger print scanner will serve as a
fundamental tool for the librarian and will reduce their verification work. In case, a
student s finger print has not been recorded, the librarian can easily capture the student s
records, and since the scanner is linked to the school s system registration is a very easy
step.
The market
There are many security companies that have implemented biometric scanners, but
majority of these systems are used to allow access to a secure building. Biometric
systems are widely been adopted in many places. The systems are used to verify a person
when they are entering secure buildings or places. Using biometrics for identity
verification reduces the chances of unauthorized access ADDIN EN.CITE

In this book it also switches the infertility from male to female but never explains its
cause: ecological obliteration and divine punishment are painstaking. Children of Men
explore the themes of hope and faith in the face of overwhelming futility and despair.
The novel The Children of Men, by P. D. James, describes what happens when society is
unable to reproduce, using male infertility to explain this problem. In the novel, it is
made clear that hope depends on future generations. James writes, It was reasonable to
struggle, to suffer, perhaps even to die, for a more just, a more compassionate society,
but not in a world with no future where, all too soon, the very words justice,
compassion, society, struggle, evil, would be unheard echoes on an empty air.
P.D.James says almost mythical Human Project is turned into a metaphor for the
possibility of the evolution of the human spirit, the evolution of human understanding.
So if you re a hopeful person you ll see a lot of hope and if you re a bleak person you ll
see a complete hopelessness at the end. This book takes place in England in the year

he was a young boy. Oxford is where Theo lives. He is a professor at Oxford University.

Ancient Chinese Contributions Ancient Chinese Contributions Kenneth Smith Professor Maxine Brown HUM 111 World Cultures I November 29, 2012 The Ancient Chinese culture has contributed in many ways to the way of life today as we know it. Upon completion of this paper, I will have identified eight to ten useful inventions or contributions that are used in the world today. Some of these inventions include the compass, gunpowder, row planting, deep drilling, and toilet paper and so on. Within those eight to ten inventions, I will choose four that I believe are the most innovative. Row Planting (Feudal period 6th Cent BC) The Chinese started planting crops in rows sometime in the 6th century BC. This allows the crops to grow stronger and faster. It facilitates ... It s assumed the discovery of occurred sometime earlier, since Zeng describes three different gunpowder mixtures and the Chinese used it for signal flares before appropriating it for military use in rudimentary grenades. Over time, we realized that metals added to the mixtures created brilliant colors in gunpowder explosions and modern day fireworks were born! It also makes a handy explosive for projectiles like bullets. (Josh Clark) Paper Once language begins to develop, though, humans wrote on anything that would stand still long enough. Clay tablets, bamboo, papyrus and stone were only a few of the early writing surfaces. Things changed once the Chinese, specifically a man named Cai Lun, invented the prototype for modern paper. Before Cai s breakthrough, the Chinese wrote on thin strips of bamboo and lengths of silk, but in AD 105, he created a mixture of wood fibers and water and pressed it onto a woven cloth. The weave in the cloth allowed the moisture in the pulpy mixture to seep out, resulting in rough paper. (Josh Clark) Toilet Paper (Sui Dynasty: 581 618 AD) As noted above, paper was an early invention of China. One of the first recorded accounts of using hygienic paper was
  • 3. Rhetorical Analysis Of 1984 By George Orwell In this excerpt from 1984, by George Orwell, Winston Smith, a worker for the ministry of truth, has been caught for committing a thought crime and is being taken to room 101 for punishment. During the passage, Smith desperately tries to escape his punishment. Through the use of rhetorical devices such as repetition, imagery, and details, the tone of urgency is revealed In the excerpt, Orwell uses the rhetorical device of repetition in order to create suspense. For example, right before the rats are going to attack, Winston says, Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me! The repetitive screams for help from Winston reveals the tone as he is frantically begging for mercy. Another example of repetition is used is when Orwell writes, To think, to think, even with a split second left to think was the only hope This reveals the tone as it reveals Winston only has a split second to save himself from the rats, and he must be able to think fast in order to do it.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, when Orwell describes, The circle of the mask was large enough now to shut out the vision of anything else. The wire door was a couple of hand spans from his face. The rats knew what was coming now. This creates the tone as the rats are now closing in on Winston and are preparing to attack, which leaves him little time left before he must face his fear. In addition, another example is when the book says Winston heard a succession of shrill cries which appeared to be occurring in the air above his head. But he fought furiously against his panic. This displays the tone as Winston has now begun to panic after hearing the cries of the rats above him. As he desperately fights against his punishment, the tone of urgency is
  • 4. Conspiracy In Othello And Catiline The Conspiracy of Catiline and Cicero s Consulship Cicero had many tough decisions during his life. One of these was what to do about Catiline and his conspirators. Cicero had made a law that prohibited people from running for legislatures to not be able to bribe voters in order to get elected. Catiline, while running for a position in the legislature, knew that this law had been partially made because of him. Catiline wanted to obtain consulship and overthrow the Roman government. Catiline, at first, just wanted to kill the two consuls, but then he decided to kill all of the Senate. Although Catiline was planning on killing the men running the government, he still tried to get legitimately elected. Catiline recruited other conspirators ... Caesar wanted all of the conspirators goods to be taken and put the conspirators into boroughs. Silanus wanted all the conspirators to be killed, since they were trying to destroy the Republic and wage war against the country. Cato wanted them to see what the punishment for other crimes similar to this one would be hoping this would discourage conspiracies in the future. Cicero and the Senate decided to kill some of the men while also letting some of them live. This decision was probably the most agreeable and best decision, but it also caused Cicero problems for his own safety and the safety of the

I intend on attending a number of events this week, including the Ghost Soliders Platoon, Sappers and Shrapnel Art Exhibition, Field of Remembrance and the main ceremony featuring the last post. At these events I will take a large amount of photos from different angles, in an effort to capture the grave feeling of this event in a single picture. • 6. The Role Of Women s Suffrage In The United States Women, for a long time, were one of the most undervalued assets essential to life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Throughout recorded history, women have been treated as less than men. They have been viewed as simply a vessel for reproduction or a maid to do housework and prepare meals for her husband. In many ancient cultures and some cultures today women are viewed merely as possessions. Surprisingly, women were even oppressed in the United States, which was founded upon freedom and equality. In the Bible, the man is supposed to be the breadwinner of the family, while the woman oversees all the household duties. People latched onto this idea which meant if you attacked that idea, you were attacking their religious beliefs. What these people did not take into consideration is that when the Bible was written times were different. When using historical accounts to develop ones beliefs you must take into consideration that life may not be the same as it was when the event occurred. In Bible times, every society was one hundred percent agrarian. This means when the Bible talks about men being responsible for all the work and providing for his family, it is referring to the physical labor that must go into producing food and running a farm. The Bible, for the most part, just divides the work of having a family based on individual strengths. Men are biologically inclined to be physically stronger and women are biologically inclined to nurture and be more gentle. The division of the work in that way made sense during ancient times. The Bible does not say that women absolutely cannot do work if they want to. It certainly does not encourage discrimination of women who do
  • 7. Jeffrey s Underlying Themes In The Film Blue Velvet In many motion pictures, underlying themes and values are often hidden amongst more superficial demonstrations and ideas. In the film, Blue Velvet, Jeffrey the protagonist is trying to solve a crime while at the same time he is really exploring this other world of explicit sexuality that is opened by his new found desire towards Dorothy Vallen, a mysterious and interesting woman that has ties to the crime. This new desire that Jeffrey has towards Dorothy is noted throughout the film as he slowly loses a grip on who he is. The idea of Jeffrey losing his grip of who he really is, is illustrated when he lies to Dorothy to get into her apartment, steals her keys, and then later sneaks into her apartment and watches her undress. In the beginning... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then got on top of her while Jeffrey hid in the closet. Jeffrey hiding in the closet illustrates the idea of Frank being the monster in this situation. Frank took the role of the monster because Jeffrey fear towards Frank shifted to a desire to be in Frank s position. As Jeffrey watched Frank take advantage of Dorothy his body language showed signs of both fear and arousal. His eyes never left sight of Frank, his breathing was sporadic and he remained silent he entire time. Jeffrey saw Frank s actions as a temporary break from reality. Leading up to this Jeffrey never saw someone like Frank before, Frank s sexual actions towards Dorothy symbolize the linking of monstrosity with the forbidden, thus leading to temporary escape from reality in the eyes of Jeffrey. In turn, the film Blue Velvet demonstrates the idea of there being a grey lie between sex and violence, illustrating thatsex and violence are interwoven. This idea is explored through the actions of Jeffrey, Dorothy, and Frank throughout the movie. Their actions in the film demonstrate the idea that fear from a monster acts as a temporary escape from reality in the form of a fantasy. This fantasy in turn shifts the idea of fear towards a monster into the idea of desire towards a

The primary tools used in SPC are graphical, including Pareto analysis, control charts and run charts. It is crucial for QI teams and researchers to understand variation in data to avoid making errors in interpretation, though in practice, many QI teams do not have sufficient biostatistical training to be able to interpret their data with confidence. The practical power of SPC is that people who are not statisticians can bring significant statistical rigor to their quantitative data in an intuitive format by understanding just a few simple, pattern based rules to distinguish special cause variation (i.e., signals) from common cause variation (i.e., noise). Distinguishing special and common cause variation is critical to understanding whether changes you are making result in improvement (i.e., is there a signal of change present?). Among all of the SPC tools, control charts have the most power to distinguish common from special cause variation. Control charts plot data over time (time on the x axis) and include a measure of central tendency (centerline, mean) and upper and lower control limits (plus/minus 3 sigma of the mean). The control limits reflect the natural variation in the data or the extent of the

News is a very broad statement and can mean many different things. It also brings all kinds of questions to mind. Originally I went with a broad question that later turned into a very specific topic making the research much easier. My first question was, How does news based in the United States effect societies views on other countries? How does foreign news affecttheir societies view on the United States? By trying to find simple research on this through the MU Library, I was quick to find that in order to write a successful research paper it is vital to have a more specific question to get the answers you want. I was not finding specific research that included specific information on foreign news and its societal affects. After some struggles, one article popped out to me about news on foreign countries and their economy so I decided to look at how the positive and negative news written about a foreign country later effects that economy. My question then became, How does an article written in a specific country affect the economy of a foreign nation? For example, if a news program based in the United States were to write an article about China, how would that article truly affect the economy of China. It has been seen that news can change the perspective of the way people see the world and all that goes on among the economic leaders. By
