Constantine And Empress Helen Their Impact On Christianity
Topic: Constantine and Empress Helena: Their Impact on Christianity
Who was Constantine?:
Constantine was believed to be born on February 22, either in 272 or 273 AD. The exact date and
year is not definite. He was the son of Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius Herculius Augustus
(mainly known as Constantius Chlorus) and Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta (mainly known as Saint
Helena). His father was an officer of the army, and his mother was an inn keeper s daughter. His
father later divorced his mother Helena, and married Flavia Maximiania Theodora; his commanding
officer s daughter. Constantius Chlorus was ranked to Caesar, the deputy emperor in the west in
293. Constantine was sent east, where he rose through the ranks to become a ... Show more content

Constantine also saw this as a sign from God. Constantine continually said that his success was
from his conversion to Christianity and the support of God. His devotion to Christianity was
closely associated with this rise to power.
What did he do for the Christian Religion?:
Constantine was credited for converting the Roman Empire to Christianity. Along with the Eastern
Roman Emperor Gaius Valerius Licinianus Licinius Augustus (better known as Licinius I) signed
the Edict of Milan, which ensured religious tolerance for Christians. The signing of the Edict of
Milan gave freedom of worship to all, and brought an end to the Age of Martyrs and ended the
persecution of Christianity. Constantine helped convene and took part in the first meetings of
Christian Churches, known as the Council of Nicea. The council of Nicea established equality of
the Father and Son. He initiated the evolution of the empire into a Christian state. He provided the
impulse for a distinctively Christian culture and prepared the way for the growing of Byzantine and
Western medieval culture.
After his victory the battle of Tiber River s Mulvian Bridge, Constantine was considered the
dominant figure in the empire. In this position Constantine ordered Maximinus II Dais to cease his
subjugation of the Christians.
Sometimes it was debated whether he was the first Christian emperor at all. The religion he did
have was a mix blend of Paganism and Christianity. Constantine s

The Death Of A Soul
A soul is something that is hard to describe and define as it is not a physical thing. When you
think above it is quite hard to be certain that human beings even have a soul because we cannot
see it or have hard evidence of it. Unlike the brain, which we cannot see our own but we know for
certain human beings do in fact have a brain due to the hard evidence such as brain scans and the
fact that we cannot do everyday tasks without it. However, saying that, it is quite common to think
that we all have a soulbecause if you can have a conscience, then we must have a soul. So how do
we know if we have a conscience? Well if you feel emotions such a sadness, happiness or even
anger but also have a moral sense such as knowing the difference between right and wrong then we
can conclude that you have a conscience. Even though the definition of soul is different to
everyone, the Greek philosopher Aristotledefines the soul as Form of the body in the De Anima.
He believed that the soul is not separate from the body but rather work as one. Whereas another
Greek philosopher, Plato believed according to the Republic, that the soul and the body are two
different parts which is something that I believe in. and
In the question Jana s soul is replaced with another soul, even though it will do the same work as
the old soul but I do not believe Jana is still Jana, the person she was before her soul was replaced.
Perhaps this is because a soul is what actually defines the person you are,

Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked...
The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where
he takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way
the Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word
choice, tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the
reader think that he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced.
Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such
sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81,
2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cubical showed every sign of having been built for a man just about my size, (p 81). Again
Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling
for twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I
began to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the
reader that the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this
because he tells the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words,
Fletcher lets the reader know that the man is imagining being with the Indian.
Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience
what it must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this
writing. Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader
what it must have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job
of making the reader believe.
The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the
writing when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his
home. I saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom
when he sat up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82).

Reflection Of Schindler s List
It can be quite difficult to describe how you view the world around you. A way to do just that could
be to analyze how you view a specific film or piece of literature, describe how it makes you feel,
and see what that says about you as a person. As such, I will analyze my view on the movie,
Schindler s List , one of my favorite movies. The movie is about Oskar Schindlerwho uses World
War 2 as an opportunity to make money as a manufacturer. He is a very smart and likeable
businessman who knows how to use his money and charisma to influence others. He manages to
start his manufactory near the Krakow ghetto and uses the inhabitants of it for cheap labor.
Schindler changes throughout the film, starting as selfish and ending up very selfless. His
accountant, also a jew, takes hiring as his responsibility and uses it to save people from being
shipped to concentration camps. Schindler is initially mad at this revelation but soon comes to
realize the good it does and allows this to continue and expand, demonstrating how he changes.
Towards the end of the movie, he ends up saving over eleven hundred jews, and his only regret
that brings him to tears is that he feels he could have saved more. This film demonstrates to me
that people are responsible for their own actions, evil is inherent in this world, and distrust in
authority can be good and necessary. I believe people are responsible for their own actions. I
came to believe this for several reasons. When I was growing up, it was common for my parents
to say things to this effect. You get what you deserve and you get out what you put in were both
similar in that regard. The idea was that your actions produce a net result that affects you and
potentially others. My father usually said this to me in regards to being a decent person or
playing football. He drove me to be a better athlete but said I was responsible to work hard. He told
me that I am a result of the decisions I make, that I become my actions. I had observed this for
myself in the real worldand came to believe it outright. Personally, I noticed that when I worked
harder at school I got better grades. When I practiced football more, I saw the results and became
better. When I workout, I feel better

A Point Of Return In Nietzsche s Groundhog Day
1.Tanksley reports about her young life up to this point that if I had to do it all over again, I
wouldn t change a thing. Can you use this as a point of departure for o Defining Nietzsche s
eternal return and showing how it works?
1.NietzscheВґs eternal return is similar to the 1993 film Groundhog Day where a news reporter got
stuck into a time loop reliving the same day over and over until breaking the loop. The contrast
here, however, is the film focusing on the reporterВґs unhappiness of reliving the same day
everyday, whereas Nietzsche philosophized that every decision and action made would be the
setup to be relived from the changing point when it all began; the cycle would be repeated when
the person dies and then is immediately reborn into the point of change. In terms of the film
Groundhog Day, the main character died at the end of each day to be reborn at the point his alarm
clock went off in the morning. (Faust, 2012) o Characterizing Tanksley s professional life as one
fit for approval by Nietzsche s eternal return?
1.In TanksleyВґs case, she believes that she has found her principle passion for life and would be
content to repeat it lifetime after lifetime. For her, it is what fuels her to live. In NietzscheВґs law
of the eternal return, each re lived life is an exact copy of the original without being changed in
other words, living in an unknown time loop or stuck in a rut . Tanksley states that she would be
perfectly happy to repeat (be reborn) as

How Did Ancient Greek Culture Influence Ancient American...
People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history
live forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world
currently, no matter if it s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn t just pop out of
no where. Historyis part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome s greatest
philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, To be ignorant of what occurred before you were
born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the
life of our ancestors by the records of history. Learn from the pastand fail less.

American s interest in ancient Greek culture develops when they sense that there s a connection
between them: ...the Greek War of Independence against Turkish domination aroused the
sympathy of our citizens, who saw in the Greek struggle for freedom a parallel to our own War
of Independence (Downs 173). The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for
freedom from a controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the
Greek culture even more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of
democracy: As the Greek Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as
indigenous to the soil of our system of law...and our democratic system of government, which
was founded on the ancient ideal of individual freedom (Downs 176). After studying and getting
hold of the architectural idea and vocabulary, Greek architecture soon becomes America s
national style. The classical look of the Greek architectural are made up of three primary orders:
Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric being the oldest and simplest of the three: The Doric order
is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a column that rests directly on the
stylobate of the temple without a base...entablature includes a frieze composed of triglyphs and
metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky, proportions (Becker 1). The
Doric is best describe as the most understated style with a masculine appearance out of the three
orders. Despite the simplest look of the Doric, it is the most popular. The Parthenon, also known
as the epitome of Greek culture, is built under the Doric order. Famous works of the Doric order
in the United States can be seen on the design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and the
Justice Hall Building in New York City. Next is the Ionic: notable for its graceful

The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott...
The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic American novel
that defines 1920 s America very well or as Fitzgerald calls it in the Great Gatsby the Jazz Age.
He wanted to show that the Jazz Age was a time of loose social and moral values, as well as to
show the reckless life styles people lived. The book is set right after WWI which was a time of
prosperity in America. During the war everyone had double the income and less expenses because
the men were getting paid for fighting in the war and the women had to get jobs to keep the
country running, which caused an excess of funds in most families. The Prohibition was also
occurring at this time which gave people the opportunity to get rich quick through... Show more

Gatsby and Wolfshiem are two good examples of people who were taking advantage of those
opportunities. The book was set in the nineteen twenty s which was a great time in American
history. In this decade, America became one of the wealthiest countries in the world. One of the
reasons for this wealth was the Prohibition, which was the ban of alcohol. Another reason for
America s wealth was that this was right after World War I. Both of these added the to wealth
and is most likely how this era became known as the Jazz Age, which was a time to just have a
good time and enjoy life, because people did not really care about anything but having a good
time and the could afford to do that or so they thought. The Eighteenth Amendment, better
known as the prohibition, was the banning of alcoholic beverages which lasted from nineteen
twenty to nineteen thirty three. The amendment was passed to try and lower the crime rate and
over all improve life, but what it really did was open doors for a new kind of crime. When
alcohol was banned criminals saw an opportunity to make easy money and make it fast which is
how bootlegging and speakeasies became very popular. Bootleggers were people who made and
sold alcohol under the table to the people who had money to blow. Speakeasies were hidden bars
that people would go to they were usually located in the back of pharmacies or restaurants. To get
into a speakeasy you had to know someone

The Lady With The Pet Dog Analysis
The Lady with the Pet Dog written by Anton Chekhov and The Lady with the Pet Dog written by
Joyce Carol Oates illustrate what goes through the mind when committing adultery. Both are tales
of love lost and love found, including romances with adulterous spouses and secret meetings. The
Lady with the Pet Dog written by Chekhov and Oates present the actions and decisions of two very
unhappy married individuals, whom one could say meet by chance. In both short stories the plot
line is extraordinarily similar; both love affairs end up finding true love from each other; however,
the emotions and general idea differ from the point of view analyzed. Although both short stories
illustrate immensely similar qualities, the short storyby Joyce Carol Oatesis more effective in three
main areas. The three main areas where Oates story is more effective include the use of the female
characters, the use of point of views, and the use of dogs. Throughout the two short stories, both
interpret the use of the female characters excitingly different. The short story written by Chekhov
interprets the female, Anna, as the female who can handle committing adultery while only breaking
down/crying a few times. On the other hand, the story written by Oates interprets the female, Anna,
as a female who can t handle committing adultery where she cuts herself (thinking about suicide)
and almost to the point where she goes crazy. In Chekhov s story the female is best examined
through the quotation: Anna Sergeyevna and he loved each other as people do who are very close
and intimate, like man and wife, like tender friends; it seemed to them that fate itself had meant
them for one another... (Chekhov 224). This quotation by the narrator best explains that Anna
Sergeyevna is a happy woman with her secret husband and she has accepted that they have to live
in secret. But, Anna is okay with that because it seems as if fate has brought them together,
although she questions it at the beginning of the story. On the contrary, in Oates s story the female
is best explained through the quotation: She was certain of that. But the bath water made her dizzy,
all that perpetual heat, and one day in January she drew a razor blade lightly across the

Essay on The True Character of Isabella in Measure for...
The True Character of Isabella in Measure for Measure
Some critics of Shakespeare s play, Measure for Measure, judge Isabella as a narrow minded but
passionate girl afflicted with an irrational terror of sex (Barton, 546), a young, immature woman
demonstrating moral absurdity and cruelty (Nicholls, 478), whose actions are scarcely defensible.
A classmate of mine asked, Why doesn t Isabella just sleep with Angelo? What s the big deal? These
statements reveal that these people have no understanding or sympathy for Isabella s position:
socially, morally or physically.
Perhaps I take the issue of Isabella s character so seriously because I played the role of Isabella in
our college s production of the play. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet I found that the script does allow for an Isabella of greater richness than we usually see
reflected in print. From within, I measured her differently.
We often hear that Isabella is a rigid absolutist, particularly in her attitude toward sexual activity
outside marriage. But beginning at the beginning, I found that Isabella is a humorous, tolerant wit.
Now I imagine that those adjectives surprise you, but let me move through her first scene, taking
into account the choices our director Ronnie Larson, the other actors and I made. In Act I scene iv, I
was blocked to enter quietly, head down, and then suddenly see the Duke (disguised in his monk
s habit) who was still center stage after his soliloquy. I paused, while our Duke awkwardly and
hesitantly blessed me with the sign of the cross. I smiled and shook my head slightly, amused at
his evident bashfulness, thinking Who is this strange brother? This moment gave me a sense of
calm certainty I knew what I was doing in this convent and in a habit, even if he didn t. I passed
downstage of him as he exited, unfurled a large white cloth on the stage as a symbolic altar, and
kneeled on it, beginning an audible rosary, Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Our Lucio, entering from the audience, saw me praying and knelt down beside me for his line,
Hail, virgin, if you be.

Apa Guide
APA Format: What Does It Mean?
Almost every KGSM written assignment specifies that the paper conform to APA style. But no
one really knows what this means. At the very least, the requirement could be that references be
cited as described in the APA manual. But APA style involves a lot more. In this document, I will
explain and/or provide examples of what I, personally, consider to be important in my classes.
Some professors may require more or less. My best advice for what to do in other classes is to ask
the professor.
Two Required Elements
Every paper has to have an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction establishes why the
reader should read the paper. Notice that the introduction does not get a heading. The... Show more

I am told Word also has a utility for managing references. I have never used it. You could also keep
track of everything manually.
Citations
Some students may be familiar with the use of footnotes to provide information about sources of
information. With APA format, footnotes are not used for this purpose. Instead, we use in text
citations and a references page near the end of the paper. The rules of the formatting of citations
and references are somewhat arcane. Typically, professors will be okay with your formatting being
pretty close. I am. Some professors might be sticklers about this. You might want to ask before
beginning your writing assignment. Software such as Reference Point or EndNote will take care of
the formatting for you if you use such software. Otherwise you will want to pay close attention to
examples provided in the manual or other trusted sources.
Here are some example citations and references. In some cases, I have simplified, maybe over
simplified some of the rules. I will be happy if you use the basics. You might want to ask your
professor if you need to be more of a stickler. Here are citations for a book (Giorgi, 2009), a journal

The Night of The Hunter is a thriller written by Davis Grubb in 1953. It is imaginably chilling
and disturbing. The book is based upon a true story of a frightening man who was hung for
murdering two women and three children. One of the main characters portrayed as the
murderer, plays the role of Harry Powell, who was just released from prison, but describes
himself as a man of God, and a preacher of the word. His psychotic inclinations lead him to a
journey of a desperate pursuit of money, left behind by his prison mate Ben Harper. The story

John nearly shut down and shut out all who were against him. He focused on what was
important, which was his and Pearl s survival. Pearl on the other hand, being only 4 years old
lived as though nothing was wrong. She was very naive, and didn t understand what was
happening; she lived in her own imaginary world. Although, John and Pearl play extremely
important roles in the novel, there are other characters that bring together the story and are
important to the overall theme. Harry Powell, the preacher, is disturbing. He was a mass
murderer who killed women for money. His psychotic mind led him to believe that God was
telling him to commit the crimes. He was conniving and immoral. He tricked people into believing
that he was a righteous man, who obeyed by the laws of the bible.
Willa, John and Pearls mother, was gullible and influenced easily. She was very trusting of Harry
Powell s word, and refused to believe anyone else but him. She wanted nothing but to impress him.
She felt that he would be a great father figure to the children. Her trust in Harry Powell leads her to
her death. Another character in the story, Rachel, a tough, resolute individual, believed in defending
herself and others she cared about especially those such as John, and Pearl. Deep down at heart,
even though she seemed calloused, she was a gentle, considerate woman, with great concern for her
children that

Servant leadership is a selfless leadership philosophy that exists in practice. People who are
servant leadership are willing to become servants and serve as leaders. Servant leadership
encourages cooperation, trust, listening, and power. Servant leadership is very different from the

People who are in servant leadership style have ten characteristics. The first characteristic is
listening. They listen to the voice of others initiatively and sincerely. The second characteristic is
empathy. They try hard to understand others, and accept and recognize the uniqueness of others.
The third characteristic is healing. They have abilities to heal oneself and others. The fourth
characteristic is awareness. They have a deep sense of self, and a clear understanding of their own
beliefs and values. They also have a comprehensive and systematic view of the issue. The fifth

Symbolism In King Lear
Camile Kaye Agbigay
January 9, 2016
Lit Device #11
King Lear/William Shakespeare
Motif: A motif can distinguish as an image, action, sound, or other figures that possess a
significant symbol and contributes to the development of a theme. A motif is a recurrent idea,
symbol, or image that develops or explains a theme in a literary work (literarydevices).
Example:
GLOUCESTER
He that will think to live till he be old, Give me some help! [As Servants hold the chair, Cornwall
forces out one of Gloucester s eyes.]
O cruel! O you god!
REGAN
One side will mock another. Th other too (3. 7. 83 86)

Regan orders to puts out Gloucester s another eye because one eye can still work.
Goneril, one of King Lear s daughters, discovers that her sister, Regan, has a sexual desire for
Edmund; therefore, Goneril poisons her own sister. However, once Edmund the Bastard is mortally
wounded, Goneril kills herself and confesses that she poisoned Regan.
Concept and Analysis: The motif of violence is evident in King Lear such as when Cornwall
puts out Gloucester s eyes, and Goneril poisons her own sister and eventually kills herself. As
Cornwall s servants captures Gloucester, Cornwall injures and punishes Gloucester as he thinks
that Gloucester is a traitor. Gloucester seeks for help from the servants saying Give me some
help! [As Servants hold the chair, Cornwall forces out one of Gloucester s eyes.] O cruel! O you
god! (3. 7. 83 85). This reveals a motif of violence because it displays a violent act as the servant
keeps hold of Gloucester while Cornwall disgustingly and violently puts out Gloucester s one eye.
In addition, Regan is not satisfied with only one eye wounded; therefore, she states One side will
mock another. Th other too (3. 7. 86), revealing the motif or recurring image of violence because
Regan s order intensifies the violence that they are doing to Gloucester. Furthermore, in the final
act, one of the

Air pollution in Mexico City As the vehicle population reached more than 700 million
worldwide, numerous cities experiencing rapid industrialization started to suffer from air
pollution (Walsh, 1999). The level of air pollution in any city is a global concern. The reason is
that air can travel freely from place to place; consequently, the polluted air from one city can
travel to another. The polluted air has numerous negative consequences for human health and

Peter Kramer s Listening To Prozac
Book Summary Peter Kramer s book, Listening to Prozac investigates the use of the medication
fluoxetine, or better known as Prozac. Prozac is a selective serotonin inhibitor (SSRI) which
means that it affects chemicals in the brain believed to responsible for depression, anxiety, and
obsessive compulsive symptoms. Prozac is prescribed to treat these mental illnesses and is
currently one of the most widely used antidepressants used in the United States. According to
Kramer s book, not only does Prozac treat depression but it make people feel better than well. It
was explained in this book that Prozac can transform the client s behavior. Early in the book
Kramer discusses the case of a woman named Tess. Tess had a difficult childhood and was at the
time clinically depressed. She was a parental child meaning that she had to take on the role of her
absent parents (pg. 3). Tess present life was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder but rather suggested that Julia s
symptoms matched several criteria but they were not enough to diagnose. However, it appears
by using the DSM V rather than the DSM IV, a diagnosis is able to be obtained. In Kramer s
book Julia is eventually prescribed Prozac and sees a drastic change in her personality. After the
effects of the drug took affect Julia felt that her life much like Tess had be transformed. She was
able to get along with her children better and she was able to enjoy her marriage more. When her
medication was decreased, Julia reported that many of her symptoms reappeared and she stated I
don t feel like myself (Kramer, 1993 pg. 29).

Rhetorical Analysis Of Professionss For Women By Virginia...
Virginia Woolf is a famous novelist, critic, and essayist. She is most known for her novels such as:
Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Common Reader, and several more. These novels are both
fiction and nonfiction, and include compelling psychological insight. Professions for Women is
another one of her famous works, and it is the shortened version of a speech that Virginia Woolf
gave on January 21, 1931 to the Women s Service League. In this speech, Woolf conveyed her
message about women in the professional world through the use of multiple rhetorical strategies.
These strategies include her use of understatements, a variety of tones throughout the speech, and
the inclusion of differing sentence structures involving both short sentences and complex sentences.
Overall, Woolf has a strong belief that women should be free to work in the professional world, and
she conveys this quite well through the use of these strategies. To begin, at the start of this speech
Woolf utilized various understatements about herself, and when combined they both contributed
vastly to helping Woolf convey her message. For example, in the first paragraph, Woolf poses a
rhetorical questionthat states, It is true I am a woman; it is true I am employed; but what
professional experiences have I had? Woolf is considered to be one of the most significant
modernists of her century, yet in this question, she seems to believe that she is not worthy of giving
this speech. This helps to convey her message because to the audience, Woolf seems more like a
peer than a superior figure. By making herself seem more like a peer, Woolf has effectively made
herself more trustworthy and relatable to the audience. Continuing, in the second paragraph, Woolf
makes yet another understatement of herself by stating, But to tell you my story it is a simple one.
Considering that Woolf is one of the most valuable modernists of her century, she is anything but
simple. Yet by making this statement to the audience, she is allowing them insight into her
personality and what she thinks of herself. Through this statement, Woolf has proved her humility
and that she views herself as just another human being. The first understatement allowed her to be

Effects Of The Stock Market Crash Of 1929
The 1920s went into American History as the most controversial decade (Geisst, 2012 p. 146).
Nobody could have foreseen at the beginning of 1929 what importance this year would have for the
financial market (Wigmore, 1975 p. 4).
The booming 20s were drastically ended by the Stock Market crash of 1929. It went down in
history as one of the worst economic downturns (Termin, 1976 p. xi). The panic at the stock market
which led to many people trying to sell their stocks started on Wednesday, October 23 (Geisst,
2012 p. 185). Thursday, October 24, 1929 has gone into history as Black Thursday (Geisst, 2012 p.

Therefore because of the shortage of stocks, prices rose to sky high levels (Galbraith, 1977 p

that speculative gamblers are not to be blamed for the crash. Knowledgeable investors were just
too optimistic in the stocks and therefore this led to the burst (Bierman, 1991 p 175). Laura
Agadoni supports this cause in her research paper (Agadoni, n.d). It was not seen at first hand in
October 1929 if stocks were overvalued. The market functioned well; investors and speculators
were buying stocks (Bierman, 1997 p.

This week in school I learned about mutations. Mutations are the changing of the structure of a
gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, Caused by the
alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections
of genes or chromosomes. The most important thing I learned about this week is that if it was not
for mutations we would not be able to survive up to this date. The assignment that I spent the most

The Influence Of Ethnic And Ethnic Culture
1: How did sports help create and maintain ethnic and racial identity in this period? Why do you
think this happened? Be sure to include Moses Fleetwood Walker as one of the individuals in your
discussion.
There was a great many ways in which sports helped to form and keep ethnic and racial identities
during the time frame. Some ethnic groups used their culture s sports, and the clubs they formed, in
order to resist assimilation into American culture thus keeping their own country s ethnic culture
intact. While some groups made the choice to maintain their ethnic culture rather than integrate it
with America s larger culture, others had no say in the matter. The group that comes to mind are the
African American people. Contrary to European clubs that tended to fight inclusion African
Americans wished to be integrated into the American culture but were denied due to systemic racism
spanning across the country. Even when they were allowed to participate in sports it wasn t for
long. Take Moses Fleetwood Walker for instance, he was one of the first African Americans to
play professional baseball because another team s player manager refused to play games with an
African American (Gems 145). One of the few real sports avenues left for African Americans was
the sport of boxing and even that was rife with racism. The only reason Africans were even allowed
to participate because white spectators enjoyed watching the brutalization of blacks (Gems 145).

very generous with his money, giving it away in the effort to protect special landscapes.
Furthermore his money, family, and donations helped him reached very high environmental

What Factors Affect Florida State Troopers
CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
This study on understanding what factors influence Florida State Troopers in Orange County to
enforce the driving under the influence (DUI) statute was done in part by listening (Burns and
Anderson, 1995) to the experiences of the Florida State Troopers who have lived that experience of
DUI enforcement, and to draw common themes from these experiences. This qualitative
phenomenological study with the theoretical underpinnings of Interpretative Phenomenological
Analysis (Shinebourne, 2011) was conducted using a small sample of participants (Florida State
Troopers) who work in Orange County. The sample, n=10, consisted of Troopers whose duties
(Trochim, 2006) as Florida Highway Patrol Officers, entailed enforcement of the Florida DUI
Statute.
Introduction to the Problem
According to Burns and DiQuiano (1987), driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious crime
that contributes to approximately 9% of traffic related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the
State of Florida. Burns and Diquiano (1987) further states that several obstacles to reducing DUI
crime in Florida during their study emerged. DUI s in Orange County were up 20% in 2014 over
2013 when there were 3031 DUI arrests or about 25 DUI s for every 10,000 residents across the
State there were 9592 DUI arrests which signifies that Orange County accounts for 32% percent of
the DUI s across the State (Swearingen, 2015).

Tyrian Purple Research Paper
Tyrian purple, founded most notably in Tyre, an ancient Phoenician city, is the pigment that begat
the association between purple and royalty. The color was made by crushing the bodies of
thousands of mollusks just for an ounce of pigment over 250,000 of the creatures needed to be
crushed, which explains the extreme expense of the color and its association with royalty. A clear
fluid was extracted from these organisms which eventually transformed into purpleon exposure to
light and air. The color was exorbitant in price being at one time worth more than gold. Apart from
its associations with royalty, the color, which ranged from more blue to more red, had strong
associations with blood. The chemical makeup of Tyrian purple is strikingly related to the chemical

Impact on Unemployment on Standard of Living
If unemployment rises in a country, will its standard of living necessarily decline?
Unemployment refers to the condition and extent of joblessness within an economy, and is

long term process of economic development and growth gives rise to variety of structural changes.
Considerable changes in productive activity from traditional agriculture to modern industry;
transformation of rural sectors into urban units; replacement of small scale and cottage industries

Essay On Judgement In To Kill A Mockingbird
Beneath the Skin
There will always be that one person that gets hate and one that everybody loves. Living up to
other s expectation is an intricate way to fit in with society. Judgement isn t the only problem in
this generation; judging somebody by their actions and appearances cause people to be outcasted
which makes an impact on society. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the narrator, Scout Finch,
sums up what has happened in her preteen years, along with her brother, Jem Finch. As they are
growing up, they face conflicts throughout their hometown, Maycomb. Maycomb is a small little
town in Alabama full of judgemental racist hypocrites. One day, their dad, Atticus Finch, is set off
to handle a case about an African American, Tom Robinson, being framed for raping a young
white girl, Mayella Ewell, daughter in of the lowest families. As a lawyer, Atticus was up with
Tom. After losing the case against Mayella s dad, Bob Ewells, Scout, and Jem have lost their
social issues. In a city like Maycomb, residents and citizens are making critiques while being
prejudice when it comes to segregation and racism. Furthermore, the novel explains that people like
to judge and reject the unfamiliar.
Judgement is one of society s biggest conflict. In chapter 9, Atticus tries to explain to the
housekeeper, Calpurnia, about why he wants the kids to grow up in the right direction saying, Why

The Duchess appears to be a very happy person, which finds joy in the tiniest things. We gain the
impression that she is a well bread woman, who takes pride in her appearance. The duke is very
proud of her appearance he describes all her beauty as he talks. The duke believes she is easily

him very jealous.
The first we hear about Porphyria s appearance is when she has just entered from being in the

laid, etc. Porphyira worshiped her lover at that point and he wanted it to stay that way, he loved
her too much for things to change, for her to find someone else to worship, he had to act at that
time in order to keep her to him self.
These poems are very powerful in the way they are putting across the love from the Duke and
Porphyria s Lover, they are both very jealous even though they properly have no reason to be but
they believe they do. Action must be taken to keep their lover s from anyone else, so they believe

Women s Influence On The Church Of Women
The role of women in Christianity is directly related to the lack of rights and equality women have
faced and continue to face in society today. Patriarchy and androcentric ideas about God featured
in scripture are the foundation of female oppression despite the several similarities between God
and women. The oversight of women s resemblance to Godis responsible for the oppression of
women in Christianity. Throughout scripture, there is maternal imagery of God in relationship to
their lovefor children, compassion, and ability to provide for others; thus, proving the significance
of women in the church. Without Mothers, the humankind would not exist. Per Christian belief,
God is responsible for the presence of all creatures: the survival of others depends on her initiative
and her industry (Johnson 100). Mothers create children just as God created Adam and Eve.
Another example of God and Mothers co creation is Julian of Norwich s third revelation: that as
truly as our lord God, almighty wisdom, all love, has made everything that exists, so truly he does

The Monk by Matthew G. Lewis Essay
The Female and Male Gothic in Austen s Northanger Abbey and Lewis The Monk
The gothic novel is characterized by mystery and supernatural fear, usually involving evil villains,
and victimized protagonists. These elements are recognized in both Austen s novel, Northanger
Abbey, and Lewis The Monk. The novels are composed of male and female gothic characteristics,
involved in gendered portrayals of supernatural events. The gothic genre is used in these novels in
unique ways, however they both portray gendered depictions of the gothic genre. Austen and Lewis
use their characters to frame the text, and abide by conventions of the male and female gothic
genres. Through the use of these gendered gothic qualities, they expose how characters, ... Show

Catherine responds, I should be too much frightened to do such a thing (Austen 178). Catherine
identifies with the female gothic here, as she is terrorized by the idea of such events, even though
they are simply made up by the villainous General.
Coinciding with the theme of the damsel in distress is the oppressed female and powerful male in
accordance with the female gothic. When Henry Tilney addresses Catherine, ensuring that there is
no hope of a relationship, she returns to her room. Austen describes Catherine as, most bitterly did
she cry...she hated herself more than she could express (Austen 224). This intense emotional
distress is a characteristic of the female gothic in which sensibility overpowers rationality. Mr.
Tilney holds power over Catherina, as he is her love interest, and destroys any hope of a life
together. Catherine s obsession with Henry s denial is attributed as she, wondered over the
repetition of a disappointment for nine successive mornings (Austen 227). This focus on love rather
than reality is a characteristic of the female gothic, where the powerless heroine is controlled by
sentiments and passion rather than logical dilemmas.
Another element of the female gothic is the explained supernatural, in which ordinary events are
explained by supernatural occurrences, combined with secret passageways within the castle. This is
made evident by Austen in a humorous way, as Catherine walks

Usfk General Order To The Rangers Case Analysis
(4) It is clear the information regarding the application of the USFK General Order to the
Rangers was disseminated to the company. It is also apparent that CPT Jorgensen had at least
some knowledge of this fact. At some point there was serious consideration by CPT Ferriter to call
MG Deedrick to ask for an exception to policy for his men to cover the weekend, particularly
because there was an MWR ski trip planned for Friday 11 MAR 16. CPT Ferriter eventually
decided it was not prudent to make that request and never asked MG Deedrick for the exception.

application of the policy to the B Co Rangers for weekend. In his statement (Exhibit 11) ... Show

conclude that CPT Jorgensen committed the act of lying to a superior Officer. It is the opinion of

Absolutist Definition Of Deviance
3.Deviance is defined in four ways, statistical, absolutist, reactivist, and normative. Statistical
deviance is a deviance that is infrequent in terms of its commanlity. Statistical deviance can be
useful because it allows a number to be placed on an area of deviance, this definition lacks
because although something is rare it does not necessarily make it a deviant. The absolutist
definition deals with a violation of standards . This definition is subjective, because standards and
norms vary from place to place it raises the questions of what standards, who makes the standards,
and where these standards apply. Reactivist is the next definition of deviance, this definition
focuses on the reaction of others. This definition lacks due to the

Pankration Persuasive Speech
The sport pankration was a mix of wrestling and boxing it was considered to be one of the
toughest sports involved in the Olympics. In this sport punches were allowed to be thrown but
the fighters did not wrap their hands with protective tape or padding known as himantes. Many
Greek thinkers think the sport was created by Theseus when he defeated a Minotaur in the
labyrinth. Certain rules that were outlawed back at the start of Pankration were no biting or
gouging out an opponent s eyes, nose, mouth with your fingernails (Oxford University Press).
One rule that is definitely outlawed today but was perfectly legal was kicking an opponent in the
belly or below the waist as it is considered today. Pankration did have division s just like boxing

The Moral Philosophy of Ethical Egoism
Let him be the best of men, and let him be thought the worst; then he will have been put to the
proof; and we shall see whether he will be affected by the fear of infamy and its consequences. And
let him continue thus to the hour of death; being just and seeming to be unjust. When both have
reached the uttermost extreme, the one of justice and the other of injustice, let judgment be given
which is the happier of the two. Glaucon, from The Republic (Pojman, Vaughn, 464).
Every day there are children dying of starvation in poor countries all over the world. In more
prosperous countries people are afforded luxuries such as lavish cars and weekly movies at the
cinema. If asked, these people will tell you that we do, in fact, have a moral obligation to help
the children if we are in a position to do so. So why, do we choose to buy the luxury car? Why do
we spend enough to feed a small village on one trip to the cinema with family? It is because deep
inside we know that our primary concern is our own self interest; the pursuit of happiness. Ethical
egoism at first glance seems counter intuitive, however, upon deeper inspection we see that ethical
egoism is the moral philosophy that should be adopted if we wish to obtain the goal of happiness.
Ethical egoism is the ethical view that one ought to do whatever and only whatever is in one s own
maximum interest, benefit, advantage, or

Essay about The Urban Legend of the Backseat Murderer
The Backseat Murderer
A good urban legend is like a good movie. It unfolds perfectly and it appeals to the audience s
hopes, fears, and anxieties. The urban legend I am about to describe was told by a first year
female biology major at the University. She is of Indian descent and both her parents work in the
biotechnology field. I collected this story on a Sunday night in the dorm. The fact that it was
nighttime helped create the proper mood for the story. It was told in a dimly lit dorm room. The
story was told with an eerie tone of voice, with emphasis and excitement during certain parts. The
final part of the story was told in a mysterious fashion, which helped with the delivery of the ending.
I heard this story a while ago from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next morning, the woman s car is found on the side of the road in a ditch by a passing driver.
He pulls over to investigate, and the woman is found dead and stabbed multiple times. It was a
gruesome site. The police are called in and they decide to investigate by asking the locals if they
knew anything. When the gas attendant was interviewed, he claimed that he heard about an
escaped serial killer on the radio and said that he saw the killer in the backseat of her car
crouching down. When he told the woman to come inside he was really trying to warn her that the
killer was in the backseat of the car without alerting him.
This story is a popular urban legend. A story similar to this one also was related in Ann Landers
column in 1982 (Joyce). There are many variations to this story. In one version, instead of pulling
into a gas station, the woman keeps driving the car and is followed very closely by another
motorist. She mistakes the motorist as an assailant, but the motorist is really trying to warn her
that there is someone else in the backseat of her car. The motorist repeatedly flashes his lights in
order to keep the backseat murderer from attacking. In yet another version, the backseat murderer
is attempting to commit an act required for his gang initiation, he has to kill the woman and sever
a body part to bring back as a trophy in order to be accepted into his gang. Although there have
been no recorded instances of this story

The Second Shift By Arlie Russell Hochschild
The Second Shift by Arlie Russell Hochschild sheds light on the fact that America is stuck in a
perpetual loop, unable to change its societal gender expectations. Substantial progress has been
made when it comes to women in the workplace, but that same progress is lacking when it comes to
a woman s work within the home. When looking at employed women the term second shift can be
brought to the forefront. The expression second shift refers to the tasks done around the house after
the initial work hours are through. Hochschild critiques how the American career system treats the
second shift ; she makes it clear that the working American society has yet to take the additional
shift into consideration due to the already implemented... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Protein Replication
Proteins are the building blocks of the cells. Without them our cells would not have the genetic
code they need to build up our bodies. Proteins are synthesised or made in the ribosome with the
help of DNA and RNA. DNA is a double helix, or a twisted ladder shape, found in the nucleus and
contains the genetic code for organisms. RNAis found in the nucleus or in ribosomes and is
composed of the nucleotides ribose, phosphate group, and nitrogenous base. While in the nucleus,
the RNA copies the genetic code from the DNAand then it leaves the nucleus to go to a ribosome to
pass the genetic code to the protein. These two processes are called transcription and translation.
Before transcription and translation occur, the process of replication must begin. Replication is
the process of creating a copy of DNA from DNA. Semiconservative replication is a method of
replication that involves three steps; unwinding, base pairing, and joining. Unwinding occurs
when the hydrogen bonds between the bases of the double helix are broken leaving single
strands of DNA. Next, base pairing between the new strand and the old strand begins. The bases
on each new strand match up with one another; A binds to T and C binds to G. Lastly, the old
strands and the new strand completely together to make a new copy of DNA. The first official step
of central dogma is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

information on the mRNA will be read. On the mRNA are codons, a set of three nitrogenous

been looked over, the transfer RNA (tRNA) is activated and begins to match each codon with an
anticodon that is in the tRNA. Together the codon and the anticodon create amino acids that are
joined by peptide bonds, these amino acids are the building blocks of

Effects of Inner-City Poverty on Youth Essay example

increased substantially, rising more than fifty percent in the last twenty years. Studies show that
there are at least nine million kids living in high poverty areas of the United States. Children

Money legally obtained is usually reinvested in illegal activities such as drug dealing in these areas
which furthers the chronic joblessness. This increases the risk of crime even more because most of
these activities are controlled by gang and crime organizations fueling drug habits these groups
thrive by capitalizing on the suffering and poverty of the surrounding areas. With these gang
members and drug dealers usually the only role models for the youth in these areas to look up to
many of them end up basing their lives and trying to live up to the standard of very unsavory street
figures. This causes youth to believe that the only way to obtain quick financial gain is through
dangerous illegal activities.
Poverty threatens a wide range of child development; most affected is academic achievements and
performance in school. Various studies performed show that poverty in the family directly
influences a decrease in IQ in children. It affects younger kids causing them to have a harder time
picking up verbal skills and learning to talk. As kids grow older it affects their achievement scores
on tests and causes them to have a harder time reaching educational milestones. This is mostly due
to the added stress of the surrounding environment, the daily

company due to technology limits. Thus, many historic companies may use different systems for
each department. We currently run a chain of restaurants, and we plan to improve the overall
efficiency and expand our business now. Concerned about our enterprise centripetal force, we must

Therefore, we consider that Integration with all Existing Systems is one of the most important

To Kill A Mockingbird Courage Research Paper
Courage can mean many different things to many different people. To some, courage can be the
ability to stand up for what is right, while for others it can be challenging oneself with tasks one is
not accustomed to. Harper Lee incorporates different types of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird so
many can connect to a moment they felt that courage. Courage is seen throughout the novel in the
form of overcoming one s fears, fighting prejudice, and standing up for what one believes to be just.
Overcoming one s fears is the first type of courage present in the novel, and it contributes
significantly to the novel as it adds emotion. Scout overcomes her fears of the Radley home and

her, she would not have been such an inspiration to those fighting against gender roles, as they

  • 2. Constantine And Empress Helen Their Impact On Christianity Topic: Constantine and Empress Helena: Their Impact on Christianity Who was Constantine?: Constantine was believed to be born on February 22, either in 272 or 273 AD. The exact date and year is not definite. He was the son of Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius Herculius Augustus (mainly known as Constantius Chlorus) and Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta (mainly known as Saint Helena). His father was an officer of the army, and his mother was an inn keeper s daughter. His father later divorced his mother Helena, and married Flavia Maximiania Theodora; his commanding officer s daughter. Constantius Chlorus was ranked to Caesar, the deputy emperor in the west in 293. Constantine was sent east, where he rose through the ranks to become a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Constantine also saw this as a sign from God. Constantine continually said that his success was from his conversion to Christianity and the support of God. His devotion to Christianity was closely associated with this rise to power. What did he do for the Christian Religion?: Constantine was credited for converting the Roman Empire to Christianity. Along with the Eastern Roman Emperor Gaius Valerius Licinianus Licinius Augustus (better known as Licinius I) signed the Edict of Milan, which ensured religious tolerance for Christians. The signing of the Edict of Milan gave freedom of worship to all, and brought an end to the Age of Martyrs and ended the persecution of Christianity. Constantine helped convene and took part in the first meetings of Christian Churches, known as the Council of Nicea. The council of Nicea established equality of the Father and Son. He initiated the evolution of the empire into a Christian state. He provided the impulse for a distinctively Christian culture and prepared the way for the growing of Byzantine and Western medieval culture. After his victory the battle of Tiber River s Mulvian Bridge, Constantine was considered the dominant figure in the empire. In this position Constantine ordered Maximinus II Dais to cease his subjugation of the Christians. Sometimes it was debated whether he was the first Christian emperor at all. The religion he did have was a mix blend of Paganism and Christianity. Constantine s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Death Of A Soul A soul is something that is hard to describe and define as it is not a physical thing. When you think above it is quite hard to be certain that human beings even have a soul because we cannot see it or have hard evidence of it. Unlike the brain, which we cannot see our own but we know for certain human beings do in fact have a brain due to the hard evidence such as brain scans and the fact that we cannot do everyday tasks without it. However, saying that, it is quite common to think that we all have a soulbecause if you can have a conscience, then we must have a soul. So how do we know if we have a conscience? Well if you feel emotions such a sadness, happiness or even anger but also have a moral sense such as knowing the difference between right and wrong then we can conclude that you have a conscience. Even though the definition of soul is different to everyone, the Greek philosopher Aristotledefines the soul as Form of the body in the De Anima. He believed that the soul is not separate from the body but rather work as one. Whereas another Greek philosopher, Plato believed according to the Republic, that the soul and the body are two different parts which is something that I believe in. and In the question Jana s soul is replaced with another soul, even though it will do the same work as the old soul but I do not believe Jana is still Jana, the person she was before her soul was replaced. Perhaps this is because a soul is what actually defines the person you are, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked... The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where he takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way the Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word choice, tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the reader think that he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced. Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81, 2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cubical showed every sign of having been built for a man just about my size, (p 81). Again Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling for twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I began to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the reader that the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this because he tells the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words, Fletcher lets the reader know that the man is imagining being with the Indian. Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience what it must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this writing. Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader what it must have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job of making the reader believe. The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the writing when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his home. I saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom when he sat up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Reflection Of Schindler s List It can be quite difficult to describe how you view the world around you. A way to do just that could be to analyze how you view a specific film or piece of literature, describe how it makes you feel, and see what that says about you as a person. As such, I will analyze my view on the movie, Schindler s List , one of my favorite movies. The movie is about Oskar Schindlerwho uses World War 2 as an opportunity to make money as a manufacturer. He is a very smart and likeable businessman who knows how to use his money and charisma to influence others. He manages to start his manufactory near the Krakow ghetto and uses the inhabitants of it for cheap labor. Schindler changes throughout the film, starting as selfish and ending up very selfless. His accountant, also a jew, takes hiring as his responsibility and uses it to save people from being shipped to concentration camps. Schindler is initially mad at this revelation but soon comes to realize the good it does and allows this to continue and expand, demonstrating how he changes. Towards the end of the movie, he ends up saving over eleven hundred jews, and his only regret that brings him to tears is that he feels he could have saved more. This film demonstrates to me that people are responsible for their own actions, evil is inherent in this world, and distrust in authority can be good and necessary. I believe people are responsible for their own actions. I came to believe this for several reasons. When I was growing up, it was common for my parents to say things to this effect. You get what you deserve and you get out what you put in were both similar in that regard. The idea was that your actions produce a net result that affects you and potentially others. My father usually said this to me in regards to being a decent person or playing football. He drove me to be a better athlete but said I was responsible to work hard. He told me that I am a result of the decisions I make, that I become my actions. I had observed this for myself in the real worldand came to believe it outright. Personally, I noticed that when I worked harder at school I got better grades. When I practiced football more, I saw the results and became better. When I workout, I feel better ... • 7. A Point Of Return In Nietzsche s Groundhog Day 1.Tanksley reports about her young life up to this point that if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn t change a thing. Can you use this as a point of departure for o Defining Nietzsche s eternal return and showing how it works? 1.NietzscheВґs eternal return is similar to the 1993 film Groundhog Day where a news reporter got stuck into a time loop reliving the same day over and over until breaking the loop. The contrast here, however, is the film focusing on the reporterВґs unhappiness of reliving the same day everyday, whereas Nietzsche philosophized that every decision and action made would be the setup to be relived from the changing point when it all began; the cycle would be repeated when the person dies and then is immediately reborn into the point of change. In terms of the film Groundhog Day, the main character died at the end of each day to be reborn at the point his alarm clock went off in the morning. (Faust, 2012) o Characterizing Tanksley s professional life as one fit for approval by Nietzsche s eternal return? 1.In TanksleyВґs case, she believes that she has found her principle passion for life and would be content to repeat it lifetime after lifetime. For her, it is what fuels her to live. In NietzscheВґs law of the eternal return, each re lived life is an exact copy of the original without being changed in other words, living in an unknown time loop or stuck in a rut . Tanksley states that she would be perfectly happy to repeat (be reborn) as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. How Did Ancient Greek Culture Influence Ancient American... People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history live forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world currently, no matter if it s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn t just pop out of no where. Historyis part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome s greatest philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history. Learn from the pastand fail less. Embrace history to prosper in the future. America adopts the ancient Greek ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American s interest in ancient Greek culture develops when they sense that there s a connection between them: ...the Greek War of Independence against Turkish domination aroused the sympathy of our citizens, who saw in the Greek struggle for freedom a parallel to our own War of Independence (Downs 173). The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for freedom from a controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the Greek culture even more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of democracy: As the Greek Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as indigenous to the soil of our system of law...and our democratic system of government, which was founded on the ancient ideal of individual freedom (Downs 176). After studying and getting hold of the architectural idea and vocabulary, Greek architecture soon becomes America s national style. The classical look of the Greek architectural are made up of three primary orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric being the oldest and simplest of the three: The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base...entablature includes a frieze composed of triglyphs and metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky, proportions (Becker 1). The Doric is best describe as the most understated style with a masculine appearance out of the three orders. Despite the simplest look of the Doric, it is the most popular. The Parthenon, also known as the epitome of Greek culture, is built under the Doric order. Famous works of the Doric order in the United States can be seen on the design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and the Justice Hall Building in New York City. • 9. The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott... The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic American novel that defines 1920 s America very well or as Fitzgerald calls it in the Great Gatsby the Jazz Age. He wanted to show that the Jazz Age was a time of loose social and moral values, as well as to show the reckless life styles people lived. The book is set right after WWI which was a time of prosperity in America. During the war everyone had double the income and less expenses because the men were getting paid for fighting in the war and the women had to get jobs to keep the country running, which caused an excess of funds in most families. The Prohibition was also occurring at this time which gave people the opportunity to get rich quick through... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gatsby and Wolfshiem are two good examples of people who were taking advantage of those opportunities. The book was set in the nineteen twenty s which was a great time in American history. In this decade, America became one of the wealthiest countries in the world. One of the reasons for this wealth was the Prohibition, which was the ban of alcohol. Another reason for America s wealth was that this was right after World War I. Both of these added the to wealth and is most likely how this era became known as the Jazz Age, which was a time to just have a good time and enjoy life, because people did not really care about anything but having a good time and the could afford to do that or so they thought. The Eighteenth Amendment, better known as the prohibition, was the banning of alcoholic beverages which lasted from nineteen twenty to nineteen thirty three. The amendment was passed to try and lower the crime rate and over all improve life, but what it really did was open doors for a new kind of crime. When alcohol was banned criminals saw an opportunity to make easy money and make it fast which is how bootlegging and speakeasies became very popular. Bootleggers were people who made and sold alcohol under the table to the people who had money to blow. Speakeasies were hidden bars that people would go to they were usually located in the back of pharmacies or restaurants. To get into a speakeasy you had to know someone ... • 10. The Lady With The Pet Dog Analysis The Lady with the Pet Dog written by Anton Chekhov and The Lady with the Pet Dog written by Joyce Carol Oates illustrate what goes through the mind when committing adultery. Both are tales of love lost and love found, including romances with adulterous spouses and secret meetings. The Lady with the Pet Dog written by Chekhov and Oates present the actions and decisions of two very unhappy married individuals, whom one could say meet by chance. In both short stories the plot line is extraordinarily similar; both love affairs end up finding true love from each other; however, the emotions and general idea differ from the point of view analyzed. Although both short stories illustrate immensely similar qualities, the short storyby Joyce Carol Oatesis more effective in three main areas. The three main areas where Oates story is more effective include the use of the female characters, the use of point of views, and the use of dogs. Throughout the two short stories, both interpret the use of the female characters excitingly different. The short story written by Chekhov interprets the female, Anna, as the female who can handle committing adultery while only breaking down/crying a few times. On the other hand, the story written by Oates interprets the female, Anna, as a female who can t handle committing adultery where she cuts herself (thinking about suicide) and almost to the point where she goes crazy. In Chekhov s story the female is best examined through the quotation: Anna Sergeyevna and he loved each other as people do who are very close and intimate, like man and wife, like tender friends; it seemed to them that fate itself had meant them for one another... (Chekhov 224). This quotation by the narrator best explains that Anna Sergeyevna is a happy woman with her secret husband and she has accepted that they have to live in secret. But, Anna is okay with that because it seems as if fate has brought them together, although she questions it at the beginning of the story. On the contrary, in Oates s story the female is best explained through the quotation: She was certain of that. The True Character of Isabella in Measure for Measure Some critics of Shakespeare s play, Measure for Measure, judge Isabella as a narrow minded but passionate girl afflicted with an irrational terror of sex (Barton, 546), a young, immature woman demonstrating moral absurdity and cruelty (Nicholls, 478), whose actions are scarcely defensible. A classmate of mine asked, Why doesn t Isabella just sleep with Angelo? What s the big deal? These statements reveal that these people have no understanding or sympathy for Isabella s position: socially, morally or physically. Perhaps I take the issue of Isabella s character so seriously because I played the role of Isabella in our college s production of the play. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet I found that the script does allow for an Isabella of greater richness than we usually see reflected in print. From within, I measured her differently. We often hear that Isabella is a rigid absolutist, particularly in her attitude toward sexual activity outside marriage. But beginning at the beginning, I found that Isabella is a humorous, tolerant wit. Now I imagine that those adjectives surprise you, but let me move through her first scene, taking into account the choices our director Ronnie Larson, the other actors and I made. In Act I scene iv, I was blocked to enter quietly, head down, and then suddenly see the Duke (disguised in his monk s habit) who was still center stage after his soliloquy. I paused, while our Duke awkwardly and hesitantly blessed me with the sign of the cross. I smiled and shook my head slightly, amused at his evident bashfulness, thinking Who is this strange brother? This moment gave me a sense of calm certainty I knew what I was doing in this convent and in a habit, even if he didn t. I passed downstage of him as he exited, unfurled a large white cloth on the stage as a symbolic altar, and kneeled on it, beginning an audible rosary, Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Our Lucio, entering from the audience, saw me praying and knelt down beside me for his line, Hail, virgin, if you be. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, once Edmund the Bastard is mortally wounded, Goneril kills herself and confesses that she poisoned Regan. Concept and Analysis: The motif of violence is evident in King Lear such as when Cornwall puts out Gloucester s eyes, and Goneril poisons her own sister and eventually kills herself. As Cornwall s servants captures Gloucester, Cornwall injures and punishes Gloucester as he thinks that Gloucester is a traitor. Gloucester seeks for help from the servants saying Give me some help! [As Servants hold the chair, Cornwall forces out one of Gloucester s eyes.] O cruel! O you god! (3. 7. 83 85). This reveals a motif of violence because it displays a violent act as the servant keeps hold of Gloucester while Cornwall disgustingly and violently puts out Gloucester s one eye. In addition, Regan is not satisfied with only one eye wounded; therefore, she states One side will mock another. • 22. Rhetorical Analysis Of Professionss For Women By Virginia... Virginia Woolf is a famous novelist, critic, and essayist. She is most known for her novels such as: Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Common Reader, and several more. These novels are both fiction and nonfiction, and include compelling psychological insight. Professions for Women is another one of her famous works, and it is the shortened version of a speech that Virginia Woolf gave on January 21, 1931 to the Women s Service League. In this speech, Woolf conveyed her message about women in the professional world through the use of multiple rhetorical strategies. These strategies include her use of understatements, a variety of tones throughout the speech, and the inclusion of differing sentence structures involving both short sentences and complex sentences. Overall, Woolf has a strong belief that women should be free to work in the professional world, and she conveys this quite well through the use of these strategies. To begin, at the start of this speech Woolf utilized various understatements about herself, and when combined they both contributed vastly to helping Woolf convey her message. For example, in the first paragraph, Woolf poses a rhetorical questionthat states, It is true I am a woman; it is true I am employed; but what professional experiences have I had? Woolf is considered to be one of the most significant modernists of her century, yet in this question, she seems to believe that she is not worthy of giving this speech. This helps to convey her message because to the audience, Woolf seems more like a peer than a superior figure. By making herself seem more like a peer, Woolf has effectively made herself more trustworthy and relatable to the audience. Continuing, in the second paragraph, Woolf makes yet another understatement of herself by stating, But to tell you my story it is a simple one. Considering that Woolf is one of the most valuable modernists of her century, she is anything but simple. Yet by making this statement to the audience, she is allowing them insight into her personality and what she thinks of herself. Through this statement, Woolf has proved her humility and that she views herself as just another human being. The first understatement allowed her to be more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Be sure to include Moses Fleetwood Walker as one of the individuals in your discussion. There was a great many ways in which sports helped to form and keep ethnic and racial identities during the time frame. Some ethnic groups used their culture s sports, and the clubs they formed, in order to resist assimilation into American culture thus keeping their own country s ethnic culture intact. While some groups made the choice to maintain their ethnic culture rather than integrate it with America s larger culture, others had no say in the matter. In order to become a Collateral Duty Inspector a sailor must go through extensive training and meet certain requirements. As a sailor looking to make the Navya career until retirement, becoming a Collateral Duty Inspector was a major goal of mine. I was on deployment with my second command VAW 126 on board the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman when I started the process. As a prospective Collateral Duty Inspector, I was working nights from 1800 to 0600. I would spend most of the night with my supervisor Palar learning what to do and what to look for. • 33. What Factors Affect Florida State Troopers CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION This study on understanding what factors influence Florida State Troopers in Orange County to enforce the driving under the influence (DUI) statute was done in part by listening (Burns and Anderson, 1995) to the experiences of the Florida State Troopers who have lived that experience of DUI enforcement, and to draw common themes from these experiences. This qualitative phenomenological study with the theoretical underpinnings of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Shinebourne, 2011) was conducted using a small sample of participants (Florida State Troopers) who work in Orange County. The sample, n=10, consisted of Troopers whose duties (Trochim, 2006) as Florida Highway Patrol Officers, entailed enforcement of the Florida DUI Statute. Introduction to the Problem According to Burns and DiQuiano (1987), driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious crime that contributes to approximately 9% of traffic related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the State of Florida. Burns and Diquiano (1987) further states that several obstacles to reducing DUI crime in Florida during their study emerged. DUI s in Orange County were up 20% in 2014 over 2013 when there were 3031 DUI arrests or about 25 DUI s for every 10,000 residents across the State there were 9592 DUI arrests which signifies that Orange County accounts for 32% percent of the DUI s across the State (Swearingen, 2015). The color was made by crushing the bodies of thousands of mollusks just for an ounce of pigment over 250,000 of the creatures needed to be crushed, which explains the extreme expense of the color and its association with royalty. A clear fluid was extracted from these organisms which eventually transformed into purpleon exposure to light and air. The color was exorbitant in price being at one time worth more than gold. • 38. Women s Influence On The Church Of Women The role of women in Christianity is directly related to the lack of rights and equality women have faced and continue to face in society today. Patriarchy and androcentric ideas about God featured in scripture are the foundation of female oppression despite the several similarities between God and women. The oversight of women s resemblance to Godis responsible for the oppression of women in Christianity. Throughout scripture, there is maternal imagery of God in relationship to their lovefor children, compassion, and ability to provide for others; thus, proving the significance of women in the church. Without Mothers, the humankind would not exist. Per Christian belief, God is responsible for the presence of all creatures: the survival of others depends on her initiative and her industry (Johnson 100). Mothers create children just as God created Adam and Eve. Another example of God and Mothers co creation is Julian of Norwich s third revelation: that as truly as our lord God, almighty wisdom, all love, has made everything that exists, so truly he does and brings about everything that has done (Dutton, 37). This is a prevalent theme throughout Christianity and is widely supported by theologians. If it is true, God s responsibility of creation is identical to the strictly biological purpose of women. And let him continue thus to the hour of death; being just and seeming to be unjust. When both have reached the uttermost extreme, the one of justice and the other of injustice, let judgment be given which is the happier of the two. Glaucon, from The Republic (Pojman, Vaughn, 464). Every day there are children dying of starvation in poor countries all over the world. In more prosperous countries people are afforded luxuries such as lavish cars and weekly movies at the cinema. If asked, these people will tell you that we do, in fact, have a moral obligation to help the children if we are in a position to do so. So why, do we choose to buy the luxury car? Why do we spend enough to feed a small village on one trip to the cinema with family? It is because deep inside we know that our primary concern is our own self interest; the pursuit of happiness. Ethical egoism at first glance seems counter intuitive, however, upon deeper inspection we see that ethical egoism is the moral philosophy that should be adopted if we wish to obtain the goal of happiness. Proteins are synthesised or made in the ribosome with the help of DNA and RNA. DNA is a double helix, or a twisted ladder shape, found in the nucleus and contains the genetic code for organisms. RNAis found in the nucleus or in ribosomes and is composed of the nucleotides ribose, phosphate group, and nitrogenous base. While in the nucleus, the RNA copies the genetic code from the DNAand then it leaves the nucleus to go to a ribosome to pass the genetic code to the protein. These two processes are called transcription and translation. Before transcription and translation occur, the process of replication must begin. Replication is the process of creating a copy of DNA from DNA. Semiconservative replication is a method of replication that involves three steps; unwinding, base pairing, and joining. Unwinding occurs when the hydrogen bonds between the bases of the double helix are broken leaving single strands of DNA. Next, base pairing between the new strand and the old strand begins. The bases on each new strand match up with one another; A binds to T and C binds to G. Lastly, the old strands and the new strand completely together to make a new copy of DNA. The sexual harassments to women both happened in these two movies, but the solutions of the main characters were different, and the outcomes of them were disparate, therefore, I wondered how did the main characters in each movie responded to the sexual harassment, and if it is different, why was it? By focusing on the different situations and personalities of the characters, especially Thelma and Josey, I m going to compare and analyze the motivations that lead them to make such decisions and the ways that they dealt with the harassments. Firstly, I want to compare the scenes that happened before Thelma and Josey were sexually harassed and analyze their similarities.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To some, courage can be the ability to stand up for what is right, while for others it can be challenging oneself with tasks one is not accustomed to. Harper Lee incorporates different types of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird so many can connect to a moment they felt that courage. Courage is seen throughout the novel in the form of overcoming one s fears, fighting prejudice, and standing up for what one believes to be just. Overcoming one s fears is the first type of courage present in the novel, and it contributes significantly to the novel as it adds emotion. (page 105) Should Cout have let this prejudice get to her, she would not have been such an inspiration to those fighting against gender roles, as they would not be able to look up to her as someone who did not let the society and gender roles get to her. Jem was also facing prejudice when he was trying to be on the football team. Coach says if I can gain twenty five pounds by year after next I can play. (page 330) The coach was only looking at Jem from the outside, not actually seeing the skills he possessed. As a result, Jem was denied entry on the team, unless he gained weight. Otherwise he would stay as the waterboy. Jem, however, pushed through and was persistent on making the team. Standing up against prejudice may take a lot of courage to do, but when done, its significance can be seen in the long run for the global fight against all types of ...
