WHAT IS AN I/O MODULE?
 A device which is connected to an I/O module of
computer is called a peripheral device.
 The input/output module (I/O module) is
normally connected to the computer system on
one end and one or more input/output devices on
the other.
2
MAJOR FUNCTION OF I/O MODULE :
 This module has two major functions:
 Interface to the processor and memory via the system bus
or central switch .
 Interface to one or more peripheral devices by tailored data
links.
 The major functions or requirements for an i/o
module fall into the following catagories:
 ►Control and Timing
 ► Processor communication
 ► Device communication
 ► Data buffering
 ► Error detection

WHY ARE I/O DEVICES NECESSARY
FOR A COMPUTER SYSTEM?
 I/O devices are the pieces of hardware used by a
human (or other system) to communicate with
a computer.
 The CPU and its supporting circuitry may
provide memory-mapped I/O that is used in low-
level computer programming, such as in the
implementation of device drivers, or may
provide access to I/O channels.
