Main Idea-A statement that tells the
author’s point about the topic.
The main idea provides the message
of a given paragraph or the argument
that is being made about
the topic.
Intro: Example on Main Idea
The rain forest is home to many creatures.
Monkeys, toucans and macaws live in the
rain forest. Blue Morpho butterflies and

o  The main idea-The rain forest is home to

How to find the Main Idea?
o  Ask yourself the question:

The WIN:

After you've read the passage, summarize it
in one sentence that includes the gist of ever
idea from the paragraph. A good way to do
this is to pretend you have just ten words to
tell someone what the passage was about.
You'd have to think broadly, so you could
included every detail in just a short statement.
Example for WIN
A themed party has the same elements as other

main idea.

The science of chemistry is central to our daily
lives. Through chemistry we have learned how to
manipulate matter into a wide variety of useful
materials, such as synthetic fibers, fuels,
medicines, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides—
all of which have dramatically altered our

o  In late 1915, Paul Robeson became the third African-American
student ever enrolled at Rutgers, and the only one at the time.
He tried out for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team and
his resolve to make the squad was tested as his teammates
engaged in unwarranted and excessive play, arguably
precipitated by racism. The coach, Foster Sanford, decided he
had overcome the provocation and announced that he had made
the team. Even after joining the debate team and joining other
groups such as Rutgers Glee Club, Robeson was tested again
when he was benched when a Southern team refused to take the
field because the Scarlet Knights had fielded a “negro.”
However, even with all of this suffering, Robeson was able to
graduate as an All-American selection, Phi Beta Kappa Honors
student, a Cap and Skull member, and the valedictorian of his
class.

We Do / You Do: Black History
Month: Jackie Robinson
o  Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 –
October 24, 1972) was an American baseball player who
became the first African-American to play in Major League
Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the
baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at
first base on April 15, 1947. As the first major league team to
play a black man since the 1880s, the Dodgers ended racial
segregation that had relegated black players to the Negro
leagues for six decades. The example of Robinson's character
and unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of
segregation, which then marked many other aspects of
American life, and contributed significantly to the Civil
Rights Movement.

across the South to enforce the desegregation of
schools.

continue to resist the integration of schools.
o  D President Eisenhower’s speech at the Summit
Meeting of Negro Leaders offended many people.
Question 3:
o  3. The effort to desegregate schools in the South was
met with resistance. What evidence from the passage
supports this conclusion?
o  A President Eisenhower reluctantly sent U.S. troops to
enforce school integration in Arkansas.
o  B At the Summit Meeting of Negro Leaders, President
Eisenhower told the assembled African Americans
that they must have patience.
o  C Governor Faubus ordered the Arkansas National
Guard to prevent African Americans from entering a
school.
o  D Jackie Robinson wrote a letter to President
Eisenhower about his civil rights comments.
Question 4:
o  5. What is the main message of Jackie Robinson’s
letter?
o  A African Americans should have the right to attend
integrated schools.
o  B President Eisenhower took the wrong action when
dealing with Governor Faubus.
o  C African Americans cannot be patient and wait for
their civil rights.
o  D African Americans have been the most patient of

Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. As the first major league team to play a black man since the 1880s, the Dodgers ended racial segregation that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues for six decades. The example of Robinson's character and unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of segregation, which then marked many other aspects of American life, and contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement.
