What is a Paragraph?
 A paragraph is number of sentences grouped together.
 It deals with one single idea.
 It is cohesive arrangement of sentences.
 It is a part of a longer composition.
 It is a miniature essay.
Structure of a Paragraph
 Topic Sentence
 Supporting sentence
 Concluding sentence
Purpose of Writing A Paragraph
Before writing we must determine the purpose of
paragraph writing. There are many purposes for writing
a paragraph:
To create a literary piece of writing.
To recount
To entertain
To express
To persuade
To evaluate
To inform
Topic sentences should:
 Introduce the topic of the paragraph and clearly state
the main idea/point that you intend to develop.
 Be specific and have a narrower focus.
 Arise the interest of the reader.
 Appear in or near the first sentence of the paragraph.
Supporting Sentence
 It develops or elaborate the topic sentence.
 It includes exemplification, persuasion, analysis etc.
 Supporting sentences give a reader details to understand a
main idea.
 Give evidence to show why a claim is true or correct.
 Supporting sentences appear in the middle of a paragraph –
after the topic sentence, and before a concluding sentence.
Concluding sentences should:
 Review main points mentioned in a paragraph.
 Restate the topic sentence.
 Appear at the end of a paragraph.
 Not introduce new ideas or topics.
 Link the current paragraph to the next paragraph.
Elements of Good Paragraph
 UNITY: All sentences relate to one single idea.
 COHERENCE: The sentences are logically organized
and clearly connected.
 RELEVANCY: The paragraph supports the overall
theme or idea.
 LANGUAGE ACCURACY: Correct punctuation,
grammatical accuracy, good or apt vocabulary, variety
of structure.
 LENGTH: A good paragraph is neither too short not
too long but an optimum one.
PROCESS OF PARAGRAPH WRITING:
 Process of paragraph writing passes through three
stages:-
1. Pre Writing Stage:--
 Carefully organize your idea before you pen them
down on paper.
 Focus on the facts you are using to support the topic.
 Evaluate your vocabulary.
 Collect data, statics, evidences and facts related to your
topic.

2.Writing Stage:--
 Turn the collected ideas and data into sentences.
 Write a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a
concluding sentence.
 Expressions should be clear, simple and not deviate
from the topic.
 Read reread, write rewrite till you satisfied.

3.Post Writing Stage or Editing Stage:--
 Check the language, grammar and structure of
sentences.
 Look the mistakes and correct them.
 Read the paragraph, evaluate it and find out the
vagueness if any.
 Check spellings.
