THE DIFFERENT AVAILABLE FILM MAGAZINES-
There are a wide range of magazine companies throughout the world, but there is a
niche market for film magazines. Film magazines vary to a great extent as the
content within them tends to differ quite significantly depending on what the
magazines offers and who their readers are. However, the readers of each
magazine still have one thing in common, which is that they want to find out more
about a film. Whether it is in regards to film culture, gossip surround the staring
actors or simply to see some reviews on a film they want to watch. This is the main
variation in film magazines, though each one offers something unique and are
specific to their reader.
These are some of the most popular film magazines:
EMPIRE
In this industry Empire is perhaps considered to be the most popular and well known entertainment brands
in the world. The company itself has various different branches of film entertainment from being globally
established online, as well as in print. Throughout the years we have seen Empire collaborate with some of
the biggest film studios as well as actors. Thus enabling them to have control over the mass market making
it hard for their competitors to top.
The reason for Empire being so successful is because they cover such a wide range within the magazine
and surround the film. From the aspect of entertainment to knowledge on the films background. This is all
incorporated which means the readers of this magazine can gain a sufficient amount on all aspects of a film.
Empire magazine follows the same layout but adapt to the genre and character of a film. In this example for
instance we see the brand identity of the magazine company, yet it is not a distraction and so allows us to
focus primarily on the film title ’inception’ and the main actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). Though this film is the
main focus of this edition we still see different film titles displayed which tells the reader the content of the
magazine as well as promoting others movies.
The genre of films which Empire tends to work with are usually more serious films. The genre which they
work with the most are dramas, horrors and action movies. This is the magazines unique selling point
because they focus on these types of films they are experts in knowing their target audience. Because of
the genres they are likely to have more male readers than female. Which enables them to market the film
specifically to what appeals to their readers.
LITTLE WHITE LIES
Little white lies is an international film magazine company targeted towards those already in the film
industry. This magazine is very well established and know for its unique presentation, where each issue is
inspire by the featured film. The design is often an illustration of the main character of the film with the film
title also incorporated. Though the overall template of the magazine and the brand identity remains simple
and easy to recreate each time without alterations . This film magazine is different from any others out
there, so it has an advantage for being individual and has been considered to be the best designed film
magazine in the market.
Because this magazine is targeted towards film enthusiast, the readers main interest is the film. Therefore
the contents is aimed towards this audience; it focuses primarily on the films review where the reader can
establish what other people may of thought of the film and allow them to make their own opinions based on
this . This is then followed by other articles about the featured film which allows more insight on detailed
level. The magazine also tends to include an exclusive interview with the movies director and sometimes
the stars of the upcoming film. This would be seen as very exiting for the magazines readers being
interested in films they are able to get more knowledge of the industry from a direct source as presumably
these interviews focus on how the film was produced, talking more about the technical side of movie
making.
When looking into the different films which are featured in this magazine, I found that there is a wide range
of different genres. This could be because the magazine knows that its readers have a keen interest in all
aspects of the industry so therefore do not wish to limit them with a single genre. Which enables them to
sell more copies as they are not restricted.
SIGHT AND SOUND
Sight and sound is a British institute know internationally, it is perhaps one of the older magazine
companies, publishing magazines for well over 5o years. The magazine is an elite brand where
the content includes sources directly from experts surrounding current trends, different takes on
classic movies and extensive information regarding film culture. As well as some different feature
of the industry.
The magazines is published each month giving reviews of various films. Unlike many film
magazines, sight and sound does not only focus on films with a general release but instead gives
a full cast and crew list for each reviewed film. Sight and sounds main focus is not just movies but
they also have exclusive editions on a range of actors and directors which gives its readers a
wider field to explore. The different subscription packages also offer a unique selling point as it
offers not just print but also digital access to a complete archive of a collection of film
commentary and criticism.
The company brands themselves as a magazine for fans of film. Which means that their reader
are familiar with the industry. This means the style of this magazine is sophisticated and so
targeted towards an educated audience. The audience is therefore likelier to be of an older
generation as some of the films are older and perhaps seen as less current. The main purpose of
this magazine company is to encourage the art of film, which is exactly what sight and sound
does.
TOTAL FILM
Total film is a British film magazine company, published only 13 times a year. Once a month plus an extra summer
time issue. Each month total film have a wide range of features which it shares with its readers. These tend to
include interviews from actors and directors, where we get an insight to life on and off set of the monthly film pick.
The unique selling point for this magazine company is that in each issue it includes a six page in depth interview with
the staring actor or director of the film as well as including a review of their work.
The magazine itself is very involved on social media and likes to interact with its reader, so they can receive
feedback directly from their followers. This way of marketing might suggests that they have a younger target
audience as most young people have a social media account. Not only does Total film provide an extensive amount
on the featured film but also includes a section on other upcoming giving its readers a first glimpse on what to
expect. Total film knows its target audience and understand that it is in their interest to be up to date with what the
trendiest films are and tells them what to watch. The magazine offers a sufficient amount of information without being
to overwhelming and still keeping a fun side to the magazine, surprising its readers and keeping them interested.
They do this by incorporating behind the scenes action and adding a humorous take on some aspects of the script.
Because total films readers are aged between 17 and 35, total film covers a spectrum of films in order to appeal to
both the film enthusiasts as well as a casual viewer who simply wish to find out if they should go see a film or not. In
comparison to many film magazines whose purpose are to promote a film to encourage an audience to watch it, total
film is completely for the viewer and wants its reader to receive entirely honest opinions surrounding the featured
film.
OUR FILM-
The two magazine covers which I felt would suit our own film the best were Total Film and Sight
and Sound. Although both companies are remarkably different and do not have the same target
audience. There are two ways which I though would be clever to market our film. The first way
was to present the film as fun and cool and trendy, this would appeal to the teen generation
which our film is aimed towards. The second way was to capture the market of parents, this is
because our film explores social issues which we feel must be exposed in order to be addressed.
And having both sides of the market covered increases the likely hood of our marketing strategy
getting ‘bums on seat’.
WHY?
The reason why I think that Total Film would be a good company for my group to use is because of the way they
interact with their audience, this is because our film surrounds online activity which I think could be really well
incorporated within the design of total film, with bright colors drawing in the readers as it presents the film as
more youthful and fun, but would also be able to capture the thriller side of the film if we presented the image
against a black background and used the right colors to get the correct balance.
However, Sight and Sound would portray a more serious side to the film, similar to the example poster it capture
the important issue and maintain the genre while addresses a more mature audience and perhaps educating
them on the importance of this film and why it should be watched.
If we decided to create our own magazine brand, we could perhaps attempt to create a mash up these two
magazine, though it would still be quite difficult to do this in way that our target audience is clear, and so the
readers know what age group we are addressing. For practical reasons it might be in our best interest to target
the film primarily towards 16 to 21 year olds because our film is a Teen Drama, they are essentially the most likely
to want to watch the film.

  • 2. THE DIFFERENT AVAILABLE FILM MAGAZINES- There are a wide range of magazine companies throughout the world, but there is a niche market for film magazines. Film magazines vary to a great extent as the content within them tends to differ quite significantly depending on what the magazines offers and who their readers are. However, the readers of each magazine still have one thing in common, which is that they want to find out more about a film. Whether it is in regards to film culture, gossip surround the staring actors or simply to see some reviews on a film they want to watch. This is the main variation in film magazines, though each one offers something unique and are specific to their reader. These are some of the most popular film magazines:
  • 3. EMPIRE In this industry Empire is perhaps considered to be the most popular and well known entertainment brands in the world. The company itself has various different branches of film entertainment from being globally established online, as well as in print. Throughout the years we have seen Empire collaborate with some of the biggest film studios as well as actors. Thus enabling them to have control over the mass market making it hard for their competitors to top. The reason for Empire being so successful is because they cover such a wide range within the magazine and surround the film. From the aspect of entertainment to knowledge on the films background. This is all incorporated which means the readers of this magazine can gain a sufficient amount on all aspects of a film. Empire magazine follows the same layout but adapt to the genre and character of a film. In this example for instance we see the brand identity of the magazine company, yet it is not a distraction and so allows us to focus primarily on the film title ’inception’ and the main actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). Though this film is the main focus of this edition we still see different film titles displayed which tells the reader the content of the magazine as well as promoting others movies. The genre of films which Empire tends to work with are usually more serious films. The genre which they work with the most are dramas, horrors and action movies. This is the magazines unique selling point because they focus on these types of films they are experts in knowing their target audience. Because of the genres they are likely to have more male readers than female. Which enables them to market the film specifically to what appeals to their readers.
  • 4. LITTLE WHITE LIES Little white lies is an international film magazine company targeted towards those already in the film industry. This magazine is very well established and know for its unique presentation, where each issue is inspire by the featured film. The design is often an illustration of the main character of the film with the film title also incorporated. Though the overall template of the magazine and the brand identity remains simple and easy to recreate each time without alterations . This film magazine is different from any others out there, so it has an advantage for being individual and has been considered to be the best designed film magazine in the market. Because this magazine is targeted towards film enthusiast, the readers main interest is the film. Therefore the contents is aimed towards this audience; it focuses primarily on the films review where the reader can establish what other people may of thought of the film and allow them to make their own opinions based on this . This is then followed by other articles about the featured film which allows more insight on detailed level. The magazine also tends to include an exclusive interview with the movies director and sometimes the stars of the upcoming film. This would be seen as very exiting for the magazines readers being interested in films they are able to get more knowledge of the industry from a direct source as presumably these interviews focus on how the film was produced, talking more about the technical side of movie making. When looking into the different films which are featured in this magazine, I found that there is a wide range of different genres. This could be because the magazine knows that its readers have a keen interest in all aspects of the industry so therefore do not wish to limit them with a single genre. Which enables them to sell more copies as they are not restricted.
  • 5. SIGHT AND SOUND Sight and sound is a British institute know internationally, it is perhaps one of the older magazine companies, publishing magazines for well over 5o years. The magazine is an elite brand where the content includes sources directly from experts surrounding current trends, different takes on classic movies and extensive information regarding film culture. As well as some different feature of the industry. The magazines is published each month giving reviews of various films. Unlike many film magazines, sight and sound does not only focus on films with a general release but instead gives a full cast and crew list for each reviewed film. Sight and sounds main focus is not just movies but they also have exclusive editions on a range of actors and directors which gives its readers a wider field to explore. The different subscription packages also offer a unique selling point as it offers not just print but also digital access to a complete archive of a collection of film commentary and criticism. The company brands themselves as a magazine for fans of film. Which means that their reader are familiar with the industry. This means the style of this magazine is sophisticated and so targeted towards an educated audience. The audience is therefore likelier to be of an older generation as some of the films are older and perhaps seen as less current. The main purpose of this magazine company is to encourage the art of film, which is exactly what sight and sound does.
  • 6. TOTAL FILM Total film is a British film magazine company, published only 13 times a year. Once a month plus an extra summer time issue. Each month total film have a wide range of features which it shares with its readers. These tend to include interviews from actors and directors, where we get an insight to life on and off set of the monthly film pick. The unique selling point for this magazine company is that in each issue it includes a six page in depth interview with the staring actor or director of the film as well as including a review of their work. The magazine itself is very involved on social media and likes to interact with its reader, so they can receive feedback directly from their followers. This way of marketing might suggests that they have a younger target audience as most young people have a social media account. Not only does Total film provide an extensive amount on the featured film but also includes a section on other upcoming giving its readers a first glimpse on what to expect. Total film knows its target audience and understand that it is in their interest to be up to date with what the trendiest films are and tells them what to watch. The magazine offers a sufficient amount of information without being to overwhelming and still keeping a fun side to the magazine, surprising its readers and keeping them interested. They do this by incorporating behind the scenes action and adding a humorous take on some aspects of the script. Because total films readers are aged between 17 and 35, total film covers a spectrum of films in order to appeal to both the film enthusiasts as well as a casual viewer who simply wish to find out if they should go see a film or not. In comparison to many film magazines whose purpose are to promote a film to encourage an audience to watch it, total film is completely for the viewer and wants its reader to receive entirely honest opinions surrounding the featured film.
  • 7. OUR FILM- The two magazine covers which I felt would suit our own film the best were Total Film and Sight and Sound. Although both companies are remarkably different and do not have the same target audience. There are two ways which I though would be clever to market our film. The first way was to present the film as fun and cool and trendy, this would appeal to the teen generation which our film is aimed towards. The second way was to capture the market of parents, this is because our film explores social issues which we feel must be exposed in order to be addressed. And having both sides of the market covered increases the likely hood of our marketing strategy getting ‘bums on seat’.
  • 8. WHY? The reason why I think that Total Film would be a good company for my group to use is because of the way they interact with their audience, this is because our film surrounds online activity which I think could be really well incorporated within the design of total film, with bright colors drawing in the readers as it presents the film as more youthful and fun, but would also be able to capture the thriller side of the film if we presented the image against a black background and used the right colors to get the correct balance. However, Sight and Sound would portray a more serious side to the film, similar to the example poster it capture the important issue and maintain the genre while addresses a more mature audience and perhaps educating them on the importance of this film and why it should be watched. If we decided to create our own magazine brand, we could perhaps attempt to create a mash up these two magazine, though it would still be quite difficult to do this in way that our target audience is clear, and so the readers know what age group we are addressing. For practical reasons it might be in our best interest to target the film primarily towards 16 to 21 year olds because our film is a Teen Drama, they are essentially the most likely to want to watch the film.
