2. Empire magazine mission statement
The Empire magazine is one of the worlds most influential film and entertainment
brand. It includes a print magazine, podcast, website, digital edition and live events
strand. The reason why Empire is one of the most influential film and entertainment
brand is the use of the different platforms they have They are able to communicate
with more film fans across the world with more authority and within the industry.
Empire collaborates with the biggest film studios and distributors and world class
filmmakers and actors to create content that no other brand could pull off. Empire is
also known for interviewing high profile celebrities such as Tom Cruise to shooting
videos with Ryan Reynolds to even being on set with Quentin Tarentino. Empire work
with world-class writers, critics, photographers and illustrators, every piece of Empire
content is considered premium, polished and connect with the audience who come
back to Empire every day, every week, every month.
3. Empire audience profile.
The primary audience for Empire magazine would be film
and TV enthusiasts, as demonstrated in all of the news and
interviews with cast and directors of current and classic
films. A primary audience of 18-40 would be largely male, in
relationships (but not necessarily married), university
educated, time-poor, and lacking relaxation. The secondary
audience of Empire is mainly females and children,
as evidenced by the fact that "Empire" can be used to teach
media lessons, and the illustrations of children's favourite
characters can appeal to kids.

4. The skyline of this issue of ‘Empire’ magazine creates
a unique selling point for this issue as it reveals that
there are two different front covers for the magazine.
This will encourage people who like the Batman films
to buy both magazines so they can collect them. The
text is in capital letters, so it is clear to see. The
information is clear as the skyline is not cluttered but
simple and effective as it makes readers want to buy
both versions of the magazine.
The ‘Empire’ brand logo is a trademark and the logo is included on
every issue front cover. It is always placed in the centre of the top of the
front cover, and fills the width of the cover. It is placed like this so the
audience can easily see the name of the magazine and recognise it. By
using the same logo on every issue with the same positioning suggests
that the magazine is based around similar principals every week but
with different content. Code: the masthead is black with a green
outline, I think this could give an idea away about the film because
‘Batman’ always wears black and the ‘Joker’ has green hair. On the
masthead it would seem that black is the dominating colour between
the two and could represent good overcoming bad and may reveal
slight hints about the film and that ‘Batman’ may overcome the ‘Joker’.
Also when you think of the colour black you think of connotations of
darkness and night which ties in with the new ‘Batman’ movie title.
5. Although the website seems to use less red than the magazine, the
colours are similar. The magazine is mainly black and white, with a
few shades of colour except for pictures and advertisements. In
combination with black and white, it suggests sophistication and
maturity. It is also a contrasting colour that will stand out if
combined. Red is also associated with danger, energy, power,
passion, love, and determination.
They have also used red on their website to create a brand identity
for the magazine because red is the colour of the masthead in many
of their magazines.
Font: Their font use consists mostly of sans serif, with the occasional serif to break up the page. Most of their bigger
stories are in a bigger font, and the newest stories are at the top. As a result, their target audience will be able to
quickly find the most significant stories by scrolling through, as they have placed the movies with good reviews in
larger writing, as these are the movies that people will want to see during the Christmas film window, when major
films are being released.
6. As it has different headers at the top and the main articles on the left hand
side, the website is very easy to navigate. When you go to the website, your
eye will naturally gravitate to the main articles. Despite the fact that they
only have quizzes on the online version, they have the same articles on the
website as in the magazine. As the website is laid out in a simplistic manner,
it is not difficult to navigate and anyone would be able to do so.
There is an advertisement on the website for e-cigarettes showing how their
audience is older and that they have the money to spend on e-cigarettes
instead of packets of cigarettes. I think it has the same kind of audience as
the magazine, which is mainly males between the ages of 14 and 25 with A, B,
and C1.Furthermore, the subscription for the magazine currently costs £25 for
12 issues, which is cheaper than getting each issue every month as it is
designed as a Christmas gift for families from A, B, and C1.

7. Codes and Conventions: This website uses some of the same conventions as the
magazine including the same red, black, white colour scheme and the same font
om the masthead. The website Is successful as it keeps the magazine looking
sophisticated and professional and the audience will recognise the magazine
through the title of the magazine as people will recognise it from the magazine.
Unlike the magazine, the website has its own conventions with the social
networking links and the most important information at the page, rather than in
the middle,
Their website has promotional pictures from each of the films or photos taken by
their photographers, but no paparazzi photos. They are representing Empire itself,
which can be a challenge since Empire will have to attract a large audience and
also has to be represented in a positive way otherwise audiences wouldn’t want to
watch it. Having a positive representation of them is important since if they were
negatively portrayed, people would not be as interested in watching the film.
8. SUMMARISE: This website is effective because it is easy to navigate around
and it is also easier that buying the magazine in a shop since it provides easy
access to articles. They are likely targeting a similar audience to the
magazine, since it was already aimed at a niche audience so they would be
attempting to target the same audience that same audience as they would
need a specific audience as most people who read the magazine would need
an interest in films otherwise they wouldn’t enjoy what they were reading. In
my opinion, the website would be more successful because the information
they provide is free and easier to find than the magazine because some shops
don’t sell the magazine, making it much harder to obtain. The magazine may
still be successful but just not as successful as the website which could be
because the magazine cost £3.99 to buy whereas it is free to use the website.
9. Little white lies mission statement
Little white lies are committed to providing equal access across all their platforms.
They recognise the importance of inclusion and access, ass the ability to assess and
improve the accessibility of their content on a continuous basis, so that they can
create a welcoming and enriching experience for disabled and deaf readers. Little
white lies are also making their website and social media channels more accessible for
those who use screen readers and other assistive technologies, by including alt text
and image descriptions for content featuring images. In addition, their magazine is at
the heart of everything they do, and they regularly assess things like readability, colour
contrast and layout styles. In 2021 they increased the point size of main body text to
8.5 based on reader feedback.

10. Little white lies audience profile.
Most of the Little White Lies audience members are women aged 18-30 who are
mostly young professionals/students, or graduates with a high level of disposable
income and free time. The majority of the audience enjoys independent and cult
cinema, as well as discussions about film as a form of art rather than
entertainment. They are interested in learning about certain key films in great
depth and digesting unconventional ideas about them so they can form opinions
about them.
Little white lies' audience also has a significant amount of free time, devoted to
cerebral leisure activities like art, liberal politics, and independent culture. Most
likely, they reside in cosmopolitan urban areas. They subscribe to the magazine,
display their collection, and enjoy established street fashion, indie electronic and
guitar music, contemporary literature in a comfortable arty festival scene, bar and
coffeehouses.

11. Little White Lies Genre Research and
conventions.
It addresses its readers by giving them articles on the film industry that the readers can
relate to or an insight into the industry. They have interviews from filmmakers and actors
that the readers can read and intake some of their knowledge/methods into their own
careers or just find out the interesting procedure towards making that film and what
inspired them to do what they do. Also, the readers can participate in quizzes they have to
test their knowledge on film, giving the readers some fun and enjoyment. The readers are
allowed to address the magazine over their website; underneath an article or review they
have published online, you can comment your opinions and views on their article or the
film they have been reviewing. Recently, the types of articles/features that are contained
in the magazine is “The 25 Best DVD & Blu-ray Releases Of 2014” and “Howard Shore's
Guide To Creating The Perfect Film Score” so from these articles, we can see that their
articles mostly discuss about films and the film industry, giving the readers tips.
12. Little White Lies Graphic elements
The article engages with the audience because it has been written in a unique way
that captures the audience attention. I feel that the article uses humour to make
the audience comfortable and relate to the audience such as "hybristophite(Google
It)"; as a reader I laughed because I felt it was something that I was thinking and
could relate to making me want to carry on reading. Also, the use of rhetorical
questions gets the readers more involved with text and have some sort of
connection to the film; it gives the reader a choice to place their opinion on the
article.
The reason for the magazines popularity is because it is unique and delivers articles
and reviews in a different, distinct way; it focuses more on the truth of films and
the meaning behind the films. I feel that their graphic design is the core of their
popularity because it is beautiful to look at and admire the hard work put into it.
The magazine offers the reader an insight to the film industry that they can learn
from and reviews on upcoming films which they are not to sure on whether to go
and watch it or just stay at home.
13. The title of the magazine
Little White Lies is placed
on the actors forehead in
order for it to be one of
the first things to notice
which stands put to the
audience. However you
could say that there is a
connection between the
verb ‘Lies’ and how it is
positioned on the female.
As the verb ‘Lies’ could
imply to the audience that
she plays the role of a
secretive teenager.
The cover image of the magazine is a close
up portrait of the main character Elle
Fanning. The image captivates an
innocence and corruption clash. This is due
to the use of the colours blue and red which
emphasize the contrast between light and
dark, innocence and corruption. In
addition, the use of the eye colour blue in
Elle Fanning portrait connotes an innocent
side of her whereas in the background there
are red eyes behind her connoting an evil
side of her. Also, the shattered face
elements in the background represents a
psychological breaking point of the
character Jesse.
Moreover, the elegant title contrasts against the
coloured background- blue purple and different
shades of red. Also, the noun ‘Neon’ demonstrates
to the audience that the film consists of a variety
of visual bright colours which emphasize the
character Jesses cunning personality.
