Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Hearst magazines target demographic for older women is 25+. This reaches a wide target market meaning that
they reach a wider audience to boost sales and brand awareness.
Hearst magazines also target there product at a younger demographic of 18-25 year olds. This allows them to
keep the brand modem and up to date with trends and affairs of which will appeal to this market. This will be
beneficial for me when creating my magazine as I can use the format and design to help me create my
personal cover. This is because out target markets are similar so that the branding and design will be of a
similar theme.

very serious facial expression as
he ;looks straight into the
camera.
The title is big and bold
across the middle of the
magazine cover. The us of
Dwayne Johnson is also a
way of attracting consumers
to the font cover. ‘Fans’ of
Dwayne will instantly be
attracted to the cover as
they will be able to easily
identify he is included in the
magazine. The use of white
text is a contrast against the
black clothing that Dwayne
is wearing, making this
stand out further.
The text on the right hand
side of the magazine cover
also offers an insight into the
themes inside the magazine.
Consumers can read this and
can persuade audiences into
buying the magazine.
12. QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS
Primary research
For additional research I carried out some primary research to develop my knowledge on magazines further. I
formed a questionnaire of which I handed out to 40 individuals in total between two different age groups. I
asked 20 individuals between the ages 16-20 and then I asked another 20 ages 21+. I asked them a series of
questions about their personal preferences to magazines. I have evaluated the results and will use this
research to help me when coming to create my own magazine cover and contents page in reference to
different social groups.

From my research I can evaluate that
the older generation prefer to read
more informative magazines. They
take more of an interest to themes
such as current affairs. The younger
age group strongly favour
entertainment and fashion magazines.
I believe that they are much more
modern and hold stories based on
celebrity gossip which is what teens
are more interested in.
