GENRE RESEARCH
BY BEATRICE BUDE
My chosen genre is Pop/International pop.
The Key Components of my magazine are:
Colour:
• Bright fun colours to represent what pop music
feels and is about. Make the magazine stand out.
Bring a positive vibe when reading or looking at the
front cover.
• Pop music is all about fun and youth. It is meant to
bring out the that rebel teenager and fun side of
the person. It is all about being positive and living
life; being free.
• The bright colours are eye-catching.
• It almost makes you want to brag about the
magazine you have, never mind the expiration
date.
• Bright pink and pale blue and pale purple are
associated with the favourite colours of a young
child. It is almost a memory trigger back to the
past. Therefore it is associated with happiness and
positivity.
FONT:
• Bright, popping writing to catch people’s attention.
• They are used to make certain lines stand out. These
are called main sell lines. In music, bright
spontaneous fonts are used to enhance the names
of the artists as well as the title of the magazine.
• Unusual fonts are more likely to be remembered.
Just like pop music. It is always going to be
remembered.
• The fonts of the magazine are what makes the
magazine unique.
• The font also has to represent the style of the
magazine. Examples such as a HGMaruGothicMPRO
or a Calibri bold could make the magazine boring
looking might not be a good font for a classical
magazine or a pop magazine for example, because
it’s hard or too boring to read and it is almost too
harsh or too basic for the content of the magazine
and its purpose.
LIGHTING
• In a pop magazine, lighting is important
because it makes the artist come to life, just
like what youth is about. The white
backgrounds make sure that the attention
drawn is only to the artist. Thus making sure
they are the only important notice of the
magazine. Almost like a young person, who
likes receiving attention from people around
them because it makes them feel important
and good.
• The artists are always considered a role model
for the younger generation, therefore if they
stand out, the magazine is more likely to be
bought by the younger community. Good
lighting also reveals facial features which are
important so we can see the whole person and
who they are and what emotions they are
meant to convey on that magazine cover.
COSTUMES & PROPS
• Costumes are important in a pop magazine because it brings out
personalities of a certain artist that many readers can feel they relate to.
• Usually the clothing that the artist/model wears falls under the colour
code of the magazine. This doesn’t always have to be true, as long as we
understand the person through the chosen outfits they wear.
• Most of the time, the outfits wore on the cover are re-created by the
readers.
• Artists are clothed in fashionable and stylish outfits. They are also
portrayed as happy and enjoying the every day life. This affects many of
the young readers because they don’t only see them as a role model, but
they want to be the same as the artist. But sometimes the costumes and
props are only on the cover of the magazine just so the magazine would
sell. The artists are not dressed like that in their everyday life.
• You can also say that the pop genre magazines don’t create realistic covers,
therefore affecting many of the young readers.
• But the fun and crazy outfits represent that youth is meant to be lived and
not be afraid to experiment with the way you live life. Pop is all about
being crazy and free and the costumes are trying to portray that. The props
help complement the outfit and the rest of the magazine cover.
• Often bands are the main attraction for teens, which is why they are used
the most for this genre.
CONTENT
• Content is important in pop magazine
because it lets you know what’s been
happening so far in the life of artists.
• There are also interviews by artists that
draw attention to the magazine.
• Contents are what makes the magazine.
The contents should also follow the colour
scheme of the mast head.
• The main content should be about the
artist on the front cover of the magazine.
Usually, the artist on the front cover get
about two pages whole to themselves and
the text is all about them.
• The overview of the content should
contain the cover artist photo as the main
photo on the content page, and then the
sell lines from the front cover added on
the content page and described further,
with the page number that says where the
rest of the article is placed.
OVERVIEW
To ensure that my magazine portrays the pop genre I must include the following:
• 1. Colour
- Bright colours
- Keep the colour scheme the same all the way through
- Have a colour scheme of pale colours e.g. pastel blue, baby pink, etc.
- But also some really strong colours such as a really dark or really bright red and yellow.
• 2. Font
- Bold and unusual fonts to ensure that it fits the pop/international pop genre I have chosen.
- Ensure the colour scheme appears in the font too, or that it matches with the front cover style.
- Do not use many fonts that are hard to see and make sure it is pleasant to look at and it doesn’t annoy the reader
because of a mashup of fonts that they might not be able to read very well.
• 3. Lighting
- Make sure that the model on my front cover is well lit and you can see every feature of their face.
- Make sure that they look youthful and stand out as a pop artist.
- Make sure that there aren’t any shadows of the person and have a clean white background on which I can add props if
needed.
• 4. Costumes and props
- Make sure that the outfit the model is wearing is stylish and grabs the attention of the reader.
- Make the artist look youthful with a crazy hairstyle or a crazy outfit.
- Ensure that if I add props, they complement with the rest of the front cover and that they follow on to the
content and context pages.
• 5. Content
- Ensure that the content is interesting and grabs the attention of the reader to want to keep on reading on the
magazine.
- Add interesting news and make the content page layout follow the colour scheme of the front page.
- Add images of more artists and a small interview text under their image as well as making sure I mark which
page they can be found on.
- Make sure I do not go overboard with boring information.
- Make sure the information is all about pop and add a few extra news about international pop such as pop
from Asia to please each and every different ethnic background.
