- 2. My chosen genre is pop.The key components of this genre that I will focus on are: • Colours • Font • Content • Costume
- 3. • Colours should be bright and positive. Examples are pinks, blues and yellows as these correspond with the happy and confident genre of pop. Colours Each of the examples I got of pop magazines contain colours such as the bright pinks, blues, reds and yellows. Also, I found that the magazines are usually presented on a white background to help these colours stand out further. Each of the colours the magazine uses is used for a reason.The colour pink is used as a common colour throughout as pink; the softer side of red, signifies harmony, peace and approachability. Another colour regularly repeated in the genre is yellow.The cheerful colour of yellow is symbolic of joy, happiness and warm energy. Pop magazines use these bright colour themes to make the reader feel excited and happy and enticed to buy their magazine.
- 4. Font Throughout the genre of pop there are general styles and themes when it comes to the font. Pop magazines tend to use fun exciting fonts as these match the magazine content. The titles normally stand out in bright colours like mentioned in the previous slide, but they also stand out because of their fonts. I found that with a lot of the titles I looked into, the titles had some from of an effect on them to make them more interesting. An example is the is ’pop star’ where a fishbowl effect has been used in order to make the title stand out more and to make it ‘pop’. Overall the actual font used is actually quite simple but the effects used make it a lot more interesting and fun. In this title the font is bubbly, fun and curly.This shows the fun side of the magazine as the more relaxed font is less harsh and more laidback, showing the audience that the magazine is entertaining, just like the font.The ‘s’ on this font particularly stands out to make the magazine more unique and exciting. This font, like I mentioned previously, uses an effect to make a usually boring and simple font come to life.The font is also in white to stand out from the pink background. The exclamation mark used at the end puts emphasis on the energetic style of pop that this magazine portrays. Additionally, this font used in this magazine echo's the ideas of the ‘pop star’ magazine in the previous paragraph.This is because the font used is fairly simple but the slant on the ’W’ and the speech bubble interest the reader that bit more to want to purchase this magazine in particular.The speech bubble also help the reader to relate more as if they are thinking of purchasing a pop magazine they can probably relate to the we love pop title. The fonts inside and throughout the rest of the magazine are usually quite fun yet fairly basic and gentle, something along the lines of ‘Monaco’
- 5. Lighting In pop magazines there is a correlated theme in terms of the lighting used. The lighting used is usually bright with white as a background theme throughout most of the magazine I have looked at. Due to all of the bright colours and font that are used in pop magazines the background is usually white as to not overwhelm the cover.The lighting is bright and summery and the genre of pop is all bright and fun also.The bright lighting is happy and cheerful, as is pop, and as well as this is help the cover stars stand out.This is important to the magazine because these are typically the main selling point so they need to stand out above everything else. These magazines all have bright lighting and white backgrounds to make it fun and happy like the genre. As well as this it helps the cover stars to stand out
- 6. Costumes Costumes are an important part in any genre. In pop the genres tend to be fairy simple and not to overly complicated as to not over do the already full, fun-packed and colorful font cover.The colours of costumes tend to be bright or light colours to fit with the rest of the theme and the genre. With costume being quite simple it allows the main photo to be the center of attention and this is rather important to sell the magazine as this photo is a main selling point. It allows the cover star to be the main focus. Overall, not a lot of props are used in pop magazines but it could still be a possibilty as shown on the cover of NME with Rihanna.
