This document summarizes the process of designing a magazine cover to emulate the style of Little White Lies magazine. The designer started with a photo they took, removed the background, and added the signature Little White Lies logo in the top middle. They experimented with effects like extruding and blending images to make the photo look more like an illustration. After removing details and adding filters, they finalized the cover design with a grain filter and spot healing tool to achieve an authentic magazine style.
2. Little White Lies is the
Magazine that we
decided to take
inspiration from. I started
in Photoshop with an
image that we took as a
part of our filming day. I
began by removing the
background and adding
a clear black layer
behind. We only use her
head as we are keeping
with the conventions of
this style of magazine. I
then added where the
Little White Lies
signature logo would be
situated within the page
which is in the top middle
just like most of their
other work.
3. This is fundamentally what the final
layout of our poster intended to
look like, taking into consideration
the layout and the content.
4. I then started to experiment with
the effects to create something
unique however still recognisable
as a Little White Lies magazine
cover. For this effect i used an
extrude tool to make it look as if
the image is jumping out at you
and giving it a more 3D effect.
However from a distance it looks
blurry and to photo real like
which we wanted to avoid to
keep with the conventions.
5. For this effect I sourced an image of a
broken cracked mirror and cut out it
unique texture. I then blended the two
images together with a hard mix to
make it look like her face is broken like
the mirror. Although I liked the effect
the colours of the pinks and red
standout too much and not enough
detail is shown.
6. This is a first attempt of making her
look more cartoon like. I did this by
smoothing her face and removing
detail and texture using multiple filters.
I also used a stroke tool to make the
edges and main features stand out
more.
7. After working on the cover for a while this is what we came
up with. The image no longer looks like a photo but some
sort of illustration. Much detail has been lost like her in hair
and neck.
The title of the issue was inspired
by the origional. I used the colour
red to keep with our theme and
the conventions of horrors. The
white text is outlined with a red to
make it stand out more. It also has
a glow to make it look like a horror
style of text.
8. I carried on removing more and more of the detail
to make it look as plain as possible. I then applied
a grain filter which make it look like an authentic
style image. However is did not come out perfect
and it left behind some patches in areas. To
rectify this I used a spot healing tool which selects
an area from somewhere else on the image and
blends a section with what I am covering up. This
is filling in the gaps.
9. After getting to a stage where we are happy with it, we looked
back at the conventions and noticed that the size of the page we
were working on was larger than the original magazine. This was
a simple fix by which a new page was created with the correct
measurements and the content was copied over with a small
amount of scaling adjustment.
