rocky. They stick to the same colour scheme
and to the audience I think this is very eye
catching as they stand out from other
magazines which follow the usual few
colours, where's this magazine is filled with
colour, I think this suits the target audience
as rock music people tend to like things that
set a statement and that are bold. The
colours set the mood of the magazine and I
think as it’s a few colours mixed together it
creates the sense of being mashed up and
mixed together.
The design of this magazine is very mashed up and
the masthead stands out, as the magazine is very
colorful and the writing is in sans serif and is white
its easy and clear to read so when browsing to buy
a magazine you can clearly see this behind others.
The banner of this magazine ‘my bloody
valentine’, is directly targeted at the target
audience as it uses the word ‘bloody’ it instantly
draws in the stereotypical rock fan. The colour of
the text fills in with the colours of the magazine
and is positioned under the image. I think this
gives the reader a clear indication of what’s to
come inside the magazine.
The image on the front cover directly
addresses the audience as it uses a direct
gaze, the image is of the band that is the
main feature of the magazine, each of them
are looking straight forward, it’s directly
related to the main story line. They all look
very annoyed and stern and have serious
faces on. There pose and facial expressions
represent the sort of music that this
magazine is about.
The expressions and how they are posing
shows they are very intense and gives the
reader the impression that they mean
serious business. They are all styled very
basically, there hasn’t been much done to
there hair or makeup, its raw like there
music and I think it represents there genre
of music well, as you hear there music as it
is you also seem them how it is.
All the text on the front cover is big
enough to read from a distance so that it
can easily grab the attention of the
audience, it will easily stand out on a
shelf. The cover lines on the side with
the pull quote stands out and gives the
reader a sense of what's to come inside.
The buzzer in the left third of the
magazine shows what else it going to be
inside. It gives the reader a taste for
what's inside so see if they are
interested.
The masthead of the magazine
represents the content of the magazine
very creatively, ‘louder than war’- as
punk is all about being loud and standing
out. Even the type of font fits in as it
looks like text you would see on war
items.
Overall I think the cover page is very
effective, its bold and it stands out on a
shelf, it fits in well with the genre of music
and is very eye-catching.

continues onto this page, they keeps
the colours the same. The colours
purple and blue are very vibrant and fit
in with the genre punk.
The contents page is very easy to read
and to navigate around. The font is in
sans serif which makes it look more
modern and also makes it bolder and
clearer. I think the fonts also represent
the genre of music as it’s a bold font
and punk is a very bold type of music.
The images on this page each connect
with a story, its easy to see what goes
with which as next to the images are
folio numbers. They give a clear
indication of what the stories are
about.
Each story has a sub-title and then a bit
of text underneath explaining what its
about, its gives the reader a hint of
what to expect but doesn’t give much
away so that if the reader see’s
something they like they have to read
on further, it gives the reader a taste of
what the magazine is about and further
expands on the information they get of
the cover page.
The sub-titles grab the readers
attention as they are short and snappy,
there isn’t loads to read they can just
quickly scan and see if there’s anything
that they like. The language in this
magazine is very casual but also uses
term that would fit in with the punk
genre, it’s directly aimed at them and is
presented in ways which they will
understand.
The overall impression of this contents
page is that it gives a good indication of
what’s to come inside, its very
informative. It’s designed to appeal to
people that are in punk and I think the
general layout and colour scheme
works really well. It represents the
readers by including things that will
appeal to them and by using certain
fonts and text. I also think that they
really thought about the colour scheme
and how it would fit in with there
audience.

then continues into the
double page spread. I think
it really fits in well with this
page, it creates the
atmosphere.
The images still use direct
gaze and interact with the
audience this connotes that
its very direct and they’re
trying to connect with their
eyes. They represent how
the audience want to be,
they want to be singers and
want to be aspiring.
The design of the double
page spread works well, it
works well because all the
writing is in columns and
the main image is spread
over both pages.
There also is a pull quote
which stands out so the
audience read that before
anything else, I think this
works well in a magazine as
it gives the reader an idea of
what the interview is about
and what they can expect,
this works for a lot of
people as they can easily tell
if they are going to enjoy it
or not.
On these images they still
appear to not have much
make-up on if not any, I
think this connotes they you
see them as they are, they
are natural and raw and I
think they are trying to show
their audience that there
voices are real, that they
don’t change anything they
just sing and they want to
represent that.
There isn’t actually a title on
this page, but at the start of
some paragraphs the letter
is bold and stands out, its
also larger and is in a
different font. I think that
this so it catches the readers
attention and draws their
eyes to certain parts.
I think that they try to use
humour in the pull quote to
make the audience laugh,
because when people laugh
they are more intrigued to
move on as they are
enjoying it.
My overall impression of this
double page spread is that
it’s well structured and
suited to its audience.

5. Magazine 2:
Cover PageThe colour red is a very
strong colour, it can have
lots of different
connotations, at one end it
can represent danger, death
and blood, but then it can
also represent love. I think
that’s why they chose the
colour red as it has a wide
range of connotations and
Q is a fairly mixed magazine
on music, as it covers all
different genres.
The images and text fit
together because the main
cover line is about the
image, the cover line is
directly underneath the
image and they have a pull
quote outlined in red to
make it stand out even
more. The image uses
direct gaze so they follow
you as you look at the
magazine, this can connote
that they are a very direct
group and like to interact
with there audience. They
are all dressed very
differently and have there
own style I think this
connotes that every listener
can be different they don’t
have a certain group.
The cover lines are all over the left side
of the magazine in the first third where's
the main cover line is presented in the
middle so that the audience can clearly
see it.
The logo Q is very big and clear so the
audience can clearly see it and because
its red I think it stands out on a shelf of
magazines.
The text is in serif and it really weighted
so you can clearly see the flicks on the
end, this makes it more bold and easier
to see on a stack.
The magazine has 2 buzzers to try and
draw attention, by showing what else is
inside. At a glance you can easily tell that
this is a music magazine, and you can
tell the main contents. The main cover
lines are bolder with a small bit of text
underneath, I think this is because short
and snappy words usually catch peoples
attention and that’s what they have tried
to do on here.
I think this magazine uses very technical
language that they know will catch the
audiences attention. ‘Comebacks of the
year’ is very positive and this grabs the
audiences attention as they want to
know the contents and as this is in the
top third of the layout it is a main
feature of the magazine so its clearly
seen on the shelf.

6. The contents page
of this magazine has
two pages and is
more spread out, its
set up very orderly
and into sections,
the backdrop for
this magazine is
white and there
isn’t much colour
apart from red, blue
and black and the
images.
The images all link
up to one of the
stories, they have a
page number in a
black box with a
brief description, it
is enough to intrigue
the audience but
not enough to give
everything away
and to bore them.
The text is mainly in serif, but on the main titles it has had weight added to it to made it bolder and
to make it stand out amongst the other text. There's a few bits of text that are in sans serif, it gives a
mixture of different texts just like its audience as Q looks at a very wide range of music and isn’t
directed at one genre of music.

magazine is very
influential and gives
a good indication of

doesn't’t give too

represents all sorts
of readers by using
a wide range of
different
techniques.

7. On the double page spread there is no
colour apart from black and white,
even the images have little colour.
One of the images is very staged and
they are all looking directly at the
camera, where’s the other image is
them singing and in action, it seems a
lot more natural and inviting to the
audience and you can really see they
enjoy doing what the do, the contrast
between the two images could
connote the difference between the
audience as some people don’t enjoy
gigs and prefer to just listen to music at
home, although they still have a great
respect for it some people don’t like
that sort of setting, so to relate to the
audience they have to show it in two
different situations.
As one of the images is when they
were younger one older is shows how
they have grown up and as they are
still popular how they have a wide age
range of audience.
This page also have pull-quotes which
is a very quick way for the audience to
see if they would be interested and so
they can skim read so see if its what
they really want to read about.
This page consists of some of the beginning of the paragraphs having the first
letter in bold, I think this is so that it gives the page some definition and
makes it aesthetically pleasing, because the eye has to be drawn to the page
to make you want to read it. Overall I think this page is directed at different
age groups as their audience is very wide, so it has a to suitable to everyone, I
think they have done this very cleverly by using a lot of different aspects.
