The document analyzes two magazine advertisements for pop artists Ellie Goulding and Olly Murs. For each ad, it discusses the genre, target audience, composition, colors, conventions, denotation, connotation, and representation. Both ads target a similar young female audience and feature the solo artist prominently. Ellie Goulding's ad uses gold and black colors and portrays her as natural and authentic. Olly Murs' ad uses burgundy, black and blue colors that match his clothes, presenting him as a sex symbol and role model. The analysis helped the author learn conventions for typical pop magazine ads and ways to catch audiences' attention.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Introduction
■ I will be analysing two magazine advert which has come from pop genre. I shall be
analysing Ellie Goulding and Olly Murs. In addition, I will be discussing the following:
■ genre
■ target audience
■ composition
■ colours
■ conventions
■ denotation
■ connotation
■ representation
3. Genre:
The genre reveals that is a
pop genre.This is because
pop magazine advert has
the tendency to have
similar designs where the
solo artist would be the
main focus of this
advertisement.
Colours:
There is 2 distinct colours
which the audience can
see.They are Gold and
Black.The gold links with
the name of the song
“lights” and the black
contrast the advert to
symbolises darkness thus
making it standing out.
Target Audience: Female
audience who are aged around 13
years old to 25 years old would be
inclined to listen to EllieGouding.
This is because the design of how
laid out the advert is would make
it appealing for a female
audience to listen to her. Also the
typography that has been
conducted.The font is curvy, tall
and elegant which is traits that a
woman would associate with as
the font portrays as feminine
font.
Composition: Big, bold image of
Ellie on the advert.This
highlights the importance that
she wants her audience to pay
attention to her. This is the same
explanation with her name as this
would be the first element an
audience would observe.
4. Conventions:
There is a few conventions
which includes critics,
reviews, a company logo and
website.This tell us that this
is a typically magazine
advert and audience would
expect this conventional
aspects on many adverts.
Denotation:
As we can clearly see, ellie is
looking away from the
audience.This tells us that
she is promoting herself as
well as her music.This is
because she gives an
impression that she is quite
posey towards her audience.
Conotation:
Ellie Goulding is not glammed
up as most pop artist would
be.There is a minimal makeup
as you can see.This connates
that ellie Goulding wants
purity and authencity within
her songs as she
demonstrates how natural she
is in this magazine advert.
Representation:
There is music symbols on the
bottom of cd advert which is
rare to find as well as
different.This may represent
ellie Goulding that she can
bring something different to
the music industry which
makes her diverse and
versatile artist.
5. Genre: The genre that we
can perceive is pop genre.
Yet again, it is the same
reason as I have
mentioned with ellie
Goulding magazine advert.
It supports my statements
as we can this similar with
Olly murs.
Colours: The colours that
has been utilized within
this advert is burgurdy,
black and blue.The fact
that the colours of the
typography that has been
used links with colours of
Olly Mur’s clothes which is
very smart to do because it
will make the audience
remember it was Olly Murs
as it matching together.
Target Audience: The
target audience that would
be appropriate for Olly
murs would be a younger
female audience much like
ellie Goulding.
Composition: The
composition of this is much
bigger scale than ellie
Goulding. Here, we can see
the whole body of Olly's
Murs as we can observe his
choice of clothes. I think
his type of clothes is a
signature look as he tends
to wear more vintage
attire.
6. Conventions: It includes
conventions such as
websites, tracklist and time
of the release of the album.
Most of the conventions
that are added informs the
audience for more
information if they are
intrigued with this album.
As a result, the conventions
serves the purpose of
including it.
Denotation: We can see
that the use of typography
that has been used looks
like felt tip that has been
written. It is effective
because it aims to younger
audience as this type of
typography is associate with
pre-school children as well
as it does not look
professional.
Conotation: The use of the
blue acts as background
symbolises the journey of
Olly’s murs step being a pop
star hence the album name
“Right place, right time”.The
colour blue associate with
being tranquil and stability
and I think this what olly murs
is trying to portray.
Representation: The
representation of Olly murs is
that he is seen as a sex symbol
to the extent.This is because
he attracts to a female
audience where he wears
appropriate attire as he wants
to retain his star image where
he can appeal to a younger
audience and older audience.
He wants to be role model
thus he can’t do inappropriate
publicity.
7. Reflection:
From analyzing the magazine advert, it has enabled me to add conventions in order for
my magazine advert to be a typically magazine advert that my audience would expect
within the genre. For instance, I have make my artist the biggest focus point as well as
to create a big composition for the artist. As we can see from the 2 adverts, it is common
to do it. Also I have learnt that there many ways to be creative but it must be clear and
accurate that my audience can recognize my pop genre. Lastly, from analyzing both
texts I have realized that there are ways to catch an audience attention. As a result, I
have to include advertisement such as websites, reviews and critics for my audience in
order for them to read more about the information as well as comprehending the artist.
