Analysis of Magazine Adverts

Jessie J – Who You Are
• The magazine advert for Jessie J, in terms of the overall layout and styling. is very dramatic
for the following reasons:
• In the main image , black is the primary colour used. She is depicted wearing heavy black
eye makeup, black dress, black nail polish and shiny black hair which takes up the majority
of the advert. The information is written below in contrasting colours but using clear, bold
and simple font in capital letters. Her name is in a gold text below her face, in the middle of
the advert, in script handwriting, in order to draw attention.
• This powerful image and dramatic look , is appealing to the eye and reflects her artistic
style. This allows the reader to immediately associate the picture with her and recognise
who she is as a person and an artist, especially as this is her debut album. It reflects the title
- showing us - “who she is”
• Her top selling singles are included in the text, thus enabling the reader to identify with
what they already know and possibly wanting to know more, therefore enticing them to buy
the album.
• The website link provides instant access for the target audience. This effective technique is
attractive to young people, as regular users of the internet and social networking sites.
Jay Z – The Blueprint 3
• At times, the artists name in bold , large font, placed at the top of the album
alongside the album title, as they are so famous, is enough.
• The simple but dramatic colour scheme of red , black , white and silver is effective as
it is clear. The strong horizontal thick red lines help draw the audiences’ attention
and will help them remember this particular album cover and makes it instantly
identifiable. Three red lines also tie in with the number 3 in the album title.
• At the bottom of the advert, a popular song called “Run This Town”, which at the
time of release was vey high in the charts is stated and for listeners who enjoyed this
single, they will want to hear more of the album. The date of album release , in
numbers and bigger font , grabs the viewers’ attention, and poses as a incentive to
buy. Jay-Z’s wesbite , at the bottom of the page is a tactic used by many artists to give
the fans instant access.
• The various mixture of instruments that take up the middle of the album cover
indicates that the artist wants people to concentrate on his music.
Olly Murs – Right Place Right Time
• In this poster , advertising the Olly Murs album 'Right Place Right Time‘, the simple
stance of the artist matches the title. The large image of Olly Murs, I would say,
depicts him as being in the “right place at the right time”. His casual, yet smart dress
is how he likes to be portrayed and is similar to what many young people would wear
normally.
• The red and black font stand out against the pastel blue background, drawing the eye
to focus on the actual image and text. The artist's name in large letters matches the
colour of the braces which make the poster very coherent. The font for all the text is
simple and clear.
• The words 'out now' lets people know that now is the time to purchase the album.
The listing of the artist’s no.1 singles, signifies the popularity and appeal of Olly Murs’
music. The website link allows and encourages the person to seek further
information.
• Overall this is an eye catching poster, as it’s simplistic but effective graphics tell us all
that we need to know and is an unique selling point for this artist.

Jessie J – Who You Are • The magazine advert for Jessie J, in terms of the overall layout and styling. is very dramatic for the following reasons: • In the main image , black is the primary colour used. She is depicted wearing heavy black eye makeup, black dress, black nail polish and shiny black hair which takes up the majority of the advert. The information is written below in contrasting colours but using clear, bold and simple font in capital letters. Her name is in a gold text below her face, in the middle of the advert, in script handwriting, in order to draw attention. • This powerful image and dramatic look , is appealing to the eye and reflects her artistic style. This allows the reader to immediately associate the picture with her and recognise who she is as a person and an artist, especially as this is her debut album. It reflects the title - showing us - “who she is” • Her top selling singles are included in the text, thus enabling the reader to identify with what they already know and possibly wanting to know more, therefore enticing them to buy the album. • The website link provides instant access for the target audience. This effective technique is attractive to young people, as regular users of the internet and social networking sites.

Jay Z – The Blueprint 3 • At times, the artists name in bold , large font, placed at the top of the album alongside the album title, as they are so famous, is enough. • The simple but dramatic colour scheme of red , black , white and silver is effective as it is clear. The strong horizontal thick red lines help draw the audiences’ attention and will help them remember this particular album cover and makes it instantly identifiable. Three red lines also tie in with the number 3 in the album title. • At the bottom of the advert, a popular song called “Run This Town”, which at the time of release was vey high in the charts is stated and for listeners who enjoyed this single, they will want to hear more of the album. The date of album release , in numbers and bigger font , grabs the viewers’ attention, and poses as a incentive to buy. Jay-Z’s wesbite , at the bottom of the page is a tactic used by many artists to give the fans instant access. • The various mixture of instruments that take up the middle of the album cover indicates that the artist wants people to concentrate on his music.
  • 4. Olly Murs – Right Place Right Time • In this poster , advertising the Olly Murs album 'Right Place Right Time‘, the simple stance of the artist matches the title. The large image of Olly Murs, I would say, depicts him as being in the “right place at the right time”. His casual, yet smart dress is how he likes to be portrayed and is similar to what many young people would wear normally. • The red and black font stand out against the pastel blue background, drawing the eye to focus on the actual image and text. The artist's name in large letters matches the colour of the braces which make the poster very coherent. The font for all the text is simple and clear. • The words 'out now' lets people know that now is the time to purchase the album. The listing of the artist’s no.1 singles, signifies the popularity and appeal of Olly Murs’ music. The website link allows and encourages the person to seek further information. • Overall this is an eye catching poster, as it’s simplistic but effective graphics tell us all that we need to know and is an unique selling point for this artist.
