Melavasal Slum originated in 1905-1910 and was initially considered a waste land. It has grown heavily populated due to people taking up waste sorting as an income source. The slum residents face difficulties as the location is far from amenities like hospitals, schools, and ration shops - requiring significant transportation costs. Over 200 slums exist in total in Madurai, with inhabitants of one slum seeking to relocate closer to available resources and facilities.
