History of Manjal Medu
In 1960s Manjalmedu was a cremation ground and  covered with thorny bushes,  After 1970s a group of people came to Manjal Medu from Gomospalayam to continue their life. In 1974 The Tamil Nadu Government constructed 180 Houses to the people
Manjal Medu slum is Located Near Arapalayam in Madurai city Population is around 1480 members There are  432 families living in 300 houses  There are six identifiable housing clusters Location Population

Sanitary workers in Government Sector. (Bus Stand, Corporation, Railway Station)  Collecting the wastes in and around the villages. (Papers, Plastics, Bottles) Working in Fish Market (Salesman) Milk Production and Selling to Market. House Keeping to Rich. Ironing and Cow Dung Preparation
Sanitation
Un cleaned streets. Stagnation of water around the streets. (Mosquitoes on water surface) Improper drinking water. (Often drainage water mix with drinking water) Lack of bath room and toilet.
Resources/Facilities
Public distribution system (PDS) or ration shop. Integrated Child Development Centre (Balwadies or baby school). Sufficient transport and Electricity. Public health centre (PHC). Community hall & two temples.
There is no separate school in this slum. People encourage their children to study Their children study in various schools Many students do not go for their higher studies due to poverty (Males-10 th  females-8 th  standard only). Education
Food  -  Rice, Pulses, Vegetables, Egg, Meat Shelter -  Hut, Tile House, Concrete House etc… Language -  Tamil, Telugu  Dress Code: Men -  Shirts, Pants and Dhoti  Women-  Saris, chudidhar  Culture
This is our first field visit to slum area. After the visit we really felt that about their difficulties in their day to day life. We gathered more information about their Life. The government should take the responsibility to protect their life As social workers  we should bring the changes among them through the awareness programs. Conclusion
