A Farming Systems Approach to Support Planning and Investment in AgricultureFMNR Hub
This document discusses the importance of taking a farming systems approach to support agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. It notes that a one-size-fits-all approach has not been effective due to the diversity of farming systems and households. Taking a farming systems approach allows for understanding the complexity of farm decision making and better targeting of interventions. The document proposes classifying farming systems based on agro-ecology, market access, and commodities to simplify complexity for investment planning while still recognizing internal heterogeneity. This approach could help prioritize poverty reduction pathways, technologies, and policies for each system.
This document discusses the challenges facing agricultural systems due to climate change, shifting consumption patterns, increasing population and resource pressures. It notes the transition from cereals to meat and high-value crops requiring more resources. New patterns of global demand and increasing energy consumption and prices are also discussed. The core challenges include diverse land-use systems under high pressure, and increased competition over land and environmental resources. This has led to consequences like land grabs, social impacts, and increased economic disparities. The document calls for a new research agenda focusing on smallholder farmers and sustainability, as well as approaches that consider interactions and strengths within complex agricultural systems. It emphasizes the need for innovation competencies around integration, co-learning, and balanced development across different
This document discusses the challenges facing agricultural systems due to climate change, shifting consumption patterns, increasing food and energy prices, and land degradation. It notes the transition from cereals to meat and high-value crops requiring more resources. Smallholder farmers play a central role in driving development but face increasing pressures. There is a need to redefine research agendas to address issues like competition over land and environmental services, economic disparities, and poverty. Approaches should focus on smallholders' innovations, systems thinking, collective action, and multi-level economic and social organizations. Capacity building for innovation is needed at the individual, organizational, partnership, and institutional levels.
This document discusses the historical trajectory of farming systems research from the 1960s to present. It outlines the evolution of the farming systems approach (FSA) from focusing on individual crop enterprises to considering whole farm systems and natural resources, and most recently sustainable livelihoods. Methodological developments improved farmer participation through techniques like RRA/PRA. However, farmers remain not fully empowered, and more empowerment is needed given future challenges. Innovation platforms can better facilitate multi-stakeholder engagement to complement FSA and achieve complex, incremental changes required to sustainably intensify agriculture by 2050.

Brief On Sustainable Agriculture Precious FinalDavidAndersson
Sustainable agriculture aims to address issues with conventional agriculture like persistent poverty, hunger, and environmental damage. It involves practices that integrate soil, crop, and livestock production while reducing external inputs and emphasizing techniques adapted to local conditions. Studies show organic and sustainable systems in developing countries can produce higher yields than conventional farms and meet global food demand. However, adoption of sustainable practices remains low due to constraints like lack of information, biomass availability, and unsupportive policies. Recommendations include tailored approaches, market support, institutional strengthening, and research to further understanding and address myths about sustainable agriculture.
The document discusses opportunities and challenges related to adapting agriculture to climate change. It proposes three objectives: 1) developing adapted farming systems using integrated technologies and policies, 2) breeding strategies to address climate stresses, and 3) identifying and deploying genetic diversity for adaptation. Specific initiatives are highlighted, such as multi-site agricultural trials, farmer exchanges, and a knowledge sharing platform, to support achieving the objectives.
Changing role of extension in response to trade agreementDevegowda S R
This document provides an overview of agriculture in India. Some key points:
- Agriculture is an important sector for India's economy and livelihoods, providing employment for 75% of the population.
- India ranks highly globally in many agricultural categories like milk, fruits and vegetables, and crops like wheat and rice.
- Reforms are needed to make the agricultural extension system more holistic, participatory, and address new challenges in farming.
- A variety of public and private extension models should be promoted to disseminate technologies and information to farmers.
This document discusses the need to shift agricultural extension from a production-led model to a market-led model. It outlines the key differences between the two approaches and information needed to support a market-led extension system. Challenges of making this shift are also presented, along with suggestions for training extension workers in market-related topics and strengthening linkages between farmers, markets, and the private sector.
This document discusses the use of impact pathways and theories of change (TOCs) within the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH). It provides examples of impact pathways developed for different A4NH research areas, including biofortification and improving food safety in informal markets. Developing TOCs clarifies the expected outputs and outcomes of research and identifies evidence gaps. It also enhances collaboration within A4NH and with external partners. Refining the TOCs requires monitoring indicators along the entire pathway from research outputs to intended development outcomes.

Pulses in integrated crop systems and agricultural landscapes - Robin Burucha...ExternalEvents
Pulses provide numerous benefits when integrated into crop systems, including fixing nitrogen, breaking pest cycles, and improving soil and water efficiency. However, their integration is limited by small-scale farmers' uncertainty about prices, marketability, and labor needs. Holistic research is needed to optimize production methods, quantify pulses' impacts on systems, and facilitate farmer adoption. This includes developing agronomic options, measuring pre-crop and intercrop effects, and understanding yield gaps and farmer decision-making. Improved policies, seed systems, markets, and extension approaches can also support greater pulse integration.

Editor's Notes
Presentation reviews history of systems research and then links to how system research has been linked to extension
Gates Foundation and the focus on impact has put an increased emphasis on scalability of agricultural research and associated technologies. How to think about this within the African context.
Green Revolution was the first and maybe the last example of the impacts of widely scalable technologies. FSR was a response to the lack of adoption of GR technologies in rainfed agriculture, still with a commodity focus. The sustainability agenda added NRM and expansion of the CGIAR. Climate change (system resilience) and ecosystem services has added AEI.
CIAT and IITA were conceived of as undertaking research on farming systems of the lowland, humid tropics. FSR moved downstream as a linkage mechanism to extension, creating adaptive research. Questions about the role of the researcher led to farmer participatory research.
Sustainability split research into two very different modalities rather than integrating.
AEI is at one level an attempt to finally integrate NRM and commodity research and finally do research
How to assemble these outputs into a dissemination framework.
Focus on production systems in terms of priorities
