LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The lymphatic system is a
network of tissues and organs
that help rid the body of toxins,
waste and other unwanted
materials.
Lymphatic System Anatomy
Lymphatic System main’s functions
• Restoration of excess interstitial fluid and proteins to
the blood
• Absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the
digestive system and transport of these elements to
the venous circulation
• Defense against invading organisms
Lymphatic System
Pathologies
• Lymphadenopathy, refers to one
or more enlarged lymph nodes.
Small groups or individually
enlarged lymph nodes are
generally reactive in response
to infection or
inflammation.
• Treatment: Antibiotic medicines
and drainage of the lymph node.
• Lymphedema, is the swelling caused
by the accumulation of lymph, which
may occur if the lymphatic system is
damaged or has malformations. In an
extreme state, called elephantiasis.
• Treatment: excercises, wrapping the
part of body that has the problem,
massage, pneumatic compression,
compression garments.
• Lymphagiomatosis, is a disease involving multiple
cysts or lesions formed from lymphatic vessels.
• Treatment: Unfortunately, there is no standardized
treatment for lymphangiomatosis and no cure.
• Lymphoma, refers to cancer that arises
from lymphatic tissue. Lymphoid leukemias and
lymphomas are now considered to be tumors of the
same type of cell lineage.
• Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, laparotomy.
• Lymphangitis is an inflammation or an infection of
the lymphatic channels that occurs as a result of
infection at a site distal to the channel.
• Treatment: Patients with lymphangitis should be
treated with an appropriate antimicrobial agent.
Analgesics can be used to control pain, and anti-
inflammatory medications can help to reduce
inflammation and swelling. Hot, moist compresses
also help to reduce inflammation and pain.
Preventions
• Drink enough water daily
• Lymphatic drainage massage
• Get moving
• Eat more fruit on an empty stomach
• Alternate hot and cold showers
• Legs up the wall
• Look over your lymphatic nodes
• Use loose clothing
• Avoid infections
