Kata spirit berasal kata benda bahasa latin “spiritus” yang berarti luas atau dalam (breath), keteguhan hati atau keyakinan (courage), energi atau semangat (vigor), dan kata kerja “spirare”yang berarti untuk bernafas. Minuman anggur juga disebut sebagai spirit atau minuman yang memberi semangat.
