THE MYTH OF PSYCHE

As most of you know, psyche is the Greek word for soul. It s also the Greek word for butterfly. If
you have a protagonist in a story whose name is Psyche, you might expect that she will go
through a major transition and crisis. Will she survive it? Will she come through and be
transformed, or will she die? That s one way of looking at the
Psyche myth. Those of you who heard Robert Bly s White Bear story on the first day of this
conference heard a variation of the Eros and Psyche myth.

What good is knowing that you are in a very dysfunctional relationship, if you haven t the
capacity...that is the symbol of the knife...to draw a boundary, to discriminate, to cut it off, to end
the relationship if it turns out that what you see really is negative?
In this part of the story, Psyche takes both symbols in her hand. As you know, when she raises the
lamp and sees her unseen lover, her unknown bridegroom, he turns out to be the immature god of
love, Eros. Immature in that he was carrying on this secret affair. He had promised his mother, the
goddess Aphrodite, that he would punish Psyche who was so identified with the goddess
because of her beauty that the goddess s shrines were ignored. People were worshipping a human
girl as if she was a goddess, and the goddess plotted revenge for what psychologically is true. If
you identify with an archetype, you lose your humanity, your individuality. You get inflated by it.
You get taken over by it. You do get Aphrodite s revenge.
In this case Aphrodite had told her son Eros to aim his arrows at Psyche in punishment so that
she would fall in love with the vilest of men. This is the negative power of Aphrodite and Eros:
to have Psyche fall in love with someone who would really be vile for her and her development.
Instead Eros sees Psyche and falls in love with her himself. He decides to keep all that from
Mother, and so he s been having this clandestine, hidden affair

If you were to compare Charles Perrault with the Grimm Brothers they both wrote in the

Classic era. Music and the Enlightenment were very big helps to this major change between eras
and in the way the world worked and how society functioned. The Enlightenment and the curiosity
of man was the cause of the exploration and discovery of new lands all around the world. These
historical landmarks were never forgotten due to the evidence being put into the literature and

tusks and horns are made of ivory which is sold for very large sums. Many things are being done
to stop poaching but elephants and rhinos are still being poached.

elephants. The ivory business is a multi million dollar business. They buy elephant tusks for $1,500
per pound. Rhino horns are $45,000 per pound, or $6,000 for 100 grams. Many things are trying
to be done but there is still illegal ivory trading. There is a near total ban on ivory in the US. The
Chinese government has become stricter so people trade in Vietnam and Laos where there is a
less strict government. The main buyers of ivory are in Asia but people don t want to change their

Elephants and rhinos are disappearing at an alarming rate due to illegal poaching. Many elephants
are being killed everyday and they could soon be extinct. Tanzania s elephant population decreased

When you think of great Americans in our history there are countless that come to mind. Some
immediately think of the many presidents we have had, others think of inventors, but what
about the people that are in between the people that fought for equality. Fredrick Douglass
arguably had the greatest impact on American society, especially African American society, in
the nineteenth century. Douglass is credited as being an abolitionist, author, editor, and
diplomat. He used literature, books, newspapers, and even speeches, to leave a long lasting
mark on our society. Douglass advised presidents and lectured to thousands about different
causes, including women s rights. A cause he felt a strong connection with was the abolishing of
slavery, being that he was once a slave. Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey born into slavery
in February 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland. The exact date of his birthday is unknown,

Ho fung Hung s work attempts to reconcile the widespread expectation that China s rise would lead
to a fundamental change in the global status quo with the observed fact that China has become
increasingly connected to and one with the global status quo. To do this, he must first examine
China s rise and prove that it upholds the global status quo, and further must look into the origins of
China s rise, going back to the 13th century, to understand why this rise seemingly changed so little
about the global world order.
Hung s stated goals are as follows. First, he aims to outline the historical origins of the capitalist
boom in China as well as the conditions which predicated said boom. He also names four
conceptions against history to explore the global effects of China s capitalist boom and the limit
of that boom. Firstly, he seeks to challenge the notion that China is challenging the United States
neoliberal order. Secondly, he examines the belief that the increasing incomes of poor Chinese
citizens helps to reverse worldwide income polarization. Thirdly, he analyzes the claim that China
s rise is challenging Western dominion over the world, and is radically altering the world order.
Lastly, he plans to evaluate the assertion that China has been emerging as the most powerful driver

this inability can lead to cardiorespiratory disturbances, immune system dysfunction, impaired
wound healing, hormonal and metabolic imbalances, cognitive changes, and delirium. Through the
use of quiet times and nursing actions that encourage sleep, or, sleep hygiene bundles, nurses can
assist in improving sleep quality in the ICU. These bundles include noise and light reduction,
scheduling routine procedures outside of reserved sleep times, the use of earplugs and eye masks,
and the grouping of nursing care activities to minimize sleep interruptions. The aim of this proposal,
therefore, will be to implement a nursedriven, sleep hygiene protocol, in order to improve patient
care by promoting quality sleep in ICU patients. Barriers to implementation include staff resistance
to the concept, concerns regarding patient care during sleep times and difficulties in coordinating
