Logical
Thinking
Introduction: Logical thinking is to think on the basis of knowledge, what we know, and
certainties, what we can prove. The past two centuries have witnessed an unparalleled reliance on
the logical approach to thinking. It is the basis on which modern technology is founded. But the
flaw in logical thinking is that it relies on the conscious brain and this is the most limited and
vulnerable part of our thinking. In this topic, we’ll show you 7 features of logical thinking.

Logical Thinking
1. LEFT-BRAIN
THINKING
Professor Roger Sperry was the pioneer of
research into the different functions of the left
and right sides of the human brain. He
discovered that the left-brain governs the right
side of the body and the right field of vision;
deals with input sequentially; perceives the parts
more than the whole; is the seat of logical and
analytical thinking; and sets goals, plans and
reviews. The left side of the brain is the
chattering mind, thriving on, but limited by,
information.

2. RIGHT-
BRAIN
THINKING
Roger Sperry discovered that the right brain
governs the left side of the body and the left
field of vision; deals with inputs simultaneously;
perceives the whole more than the parts; and is
the seat of visual, intuitive and kinaesthetic
perception. It is responsible for imagination and
formulates symbol and metaphor. Traditionally,
these were non-managerial functions. However,
in the modern information age, the need for
creativity has changed the whole way we look at
right-brain thinking.

MANAGERIAL
THINKING
Managerial thinking tends to use the left brain
more than the right brain. The sort of workplace
issues that use left-brain thinking are: analysing
faults; investigating problems of the "what went
wrong?" variety; learning how to do things
better than in the past; obtaining information
that answers "what?", "where?", "who?" and
"why?" questions; and comparing events to
plans and measuring differences. All of these
activities rely on information being correct,
complete and understood.

4. LOGICAL
THINKING
Logical thinking comes into its own when we are
working with verifiable and reasonably certain
information. Using "scientific" information allows
us to develop our knowledge by making logical
deductions. It is the kind of thinking used in
playing games of chess and solving puzzles for
which there is an answer. Logical thinking uses 5
steps: first, have a clear goal; second, plan
sequentially; third, use information on which to
act; fourth, decide what to do using reason; and
fifth, check your conclusions.

5. SMART
GOALS
Left-brain thinking likes to work with a clear goal.
Clear goals are often described using the
mnemonic SMART, which stands for Specific,
Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-
bounded goals. For example, a SMART goal for a
business may be to produce 30 tons of product a
day from 28 tons after upgrading its machinery.
SMART goals are managerial goals. They lend
themselves to a step-by-step thought-and-action
process working from a known starting point in a
series of plans until the goal is reached.

INFORMATION
OVERLOAD
We live in an age when we are bombarded as
never before by information. Recent research by
Reuters news agency has found that up to 80% of
people suffer from Information Anxiety, a
peculiarly modern form of stress. It is calculated
that one copy of the British Sunday Times
contains in it more information than a medieval
man would have had access to in his whole
lifetime. A further survey by Gallup found that
the average person receives or sends 171
different messages every day.

7. USING
INFORMATION
Information is the lifeblood of logical thinking. It
needs to be as accurate and verifiable as possible
or else there can be no basis for further logical
thought. Once we have gathered information
which we think could be useful for our goals, we
need to make it manageable. We do this by
grouping it, listing it, ranking it, connecting it,
and generally organising it. However, where
information is uncertain, difficult to check,
subject to change, not easy to understand, then
it is of limited use.

AFinal
Word
The logical, or scientific, approach to thinking relies on information about the world around us.
From it, we can create the most wonderful inventions and manifestations. But, in a fast-paced
world, this information is quickly out-of-date, quickly inaccurate, and quickly useless. That's why
mastering left-brain thinking is never enough; we also need to use the right-brain and become
whole-brain thinkers.

LEFT-BRAIN THINKING Professor Roger Sperry was the pioneer of research into the different functions of the left and right sides of the human brain. He discovered that the left-brain governs the right side of the body and the right field of vision; deals with input sequentially; perceives the parts more than the whole; is the seat of logical and analytical thinking; and sets goals, plans and reviews. RIGHT- BRAIN THINKING Roger Sperry discovered that the right brain governs the left side of the body and the left field of vision; deals with inputs simultaneously; perceives the whole more than the parts; and is the seat of visual, intuitive and kinaesthetic perception. It is responsible for imagination and formulates symbol and metaphor. Traditionally, these were non-managerial functions. However, in the modern information age, the need for creativity has changed the whole way we look at right-brain thinking. The sort of workplace issues that use left-brain thinking are: analysing faults; investigating problems of the "what went wrong?" variety; learning how to do things better than in the past; obtaining information that answers "what?", "where?", "who?" and "why?" questions; and comparing events to plans and measuring differences. All of these activities rely on information being correct, complete and understood. The importance of facts and figures Flickr attribution: /89228431@N06/11322953266/

Using "scientific" information allows us to develop our knowledge by making logical deductions. It is the kind of thinking used in playing games of chess and solving puzzles for which there is an answer. Logical thinking uses 5 steps: first, have a clear goal; second, plan sequentially; third, use information on which to act; fourth, decide what to do using reason; and fifth, check your conclusions. • 7. 7 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Logical Thinking 5. SMART GOALS Left-brain thinking likes to work with a clear goal. Clear goals are often described using the mnemonic SMART, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time- bounded goals. For example, a SMART goal for a business may be to produce 30 tons of product a day from 28 tons after upgrading its machinery. SMART goals are managerial goals. They lend themselves to a step-by-step thought-and-action process working from a known starting point in a series of plans until the goal is reached. Achieving my goal! Recent research by Reuters news agency has found that up to 80% of people suffer from Information Anxiety, a peculiarly modern form of stress. It is calculated that one copy of the British Sunday Times contains in it more information than a medieval man would have had access to in his whole lifetime. A further survey by Gallup found that the average person receives or sends 171 different messages every day. The info spilling out of my head Flickr attribution: /dylanroscover/3450505729/
  • 9. 9 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Logical Thinking 7. USING INFORMATION Information is the lifeblood of logical thinking. It needs to be as accurate and verifiable as possible or else there can be no basis for further logical thought. Once we have gathered information which we think could be useful for our goals, we need to make it manageable. We do this by grouping it, listing it, ranking it, connecting it, and generally organising it. However, where information is uncertain, difficult to check, subject to change, not easy to understand, then it is of limited use. • 10. 10 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Logical Thinking This has been a Slide Topic from Manage Train Learn AFinal Word The logical, or scientific, approach to thinking relies on information about the world around us. From it, we can create the most wonderful inventions and manifestations. But, in a fast-paced world, this information is quickly out-of-date, quickly inaccurate, and quickly useless. That's why mastering left-brain thinking is never enough; we also need to use the right-brain and become whole-brain thinkers.
