The 3lb
Universe
Introduction: Because it is the place from where we create physically, mentally, and emotionally,
the human brain is the powerhouse of our potential. If we want to maximise what we are
capable of, we could do no better than maximise the potential of what Judith Hooper and Dick
Teresi call the "3lb universe". In this topic, weโ€™ll look at 7 key features of doing this.

AShort History of the Brain
Our knowledge of the brain's potential is very recent. Until brain surgery allowed us to look inside the brain and
discover some of its workings, man had been largely ignorant of how the brain functioned.
A Brief History of the Brain
1.The Ancient
Greeks thought the
mind was
disembodied spirit.
They believed
thoughts came from
the heart.
2. In the
Renaissance, men
believed the mind
was in the head but
not in the brain.
3. In the 1930's and
40's, the brain was
believed to be like a
computer: a data
storage organ and
calculator.
4. In the 1960's and
70's, it became clear
that most people
vastly under-use the
power of their
brains. A lot about
the brain is still
unknown.

1. THE POWER
OF THE BRAIN
Thanks to neuro-psychologist, Petr Anokhin, we
now know that the human brain is unbelievably
powerful. There are 10 billion neurons and 12
trillion nerve cells in each human brain and each
cell can physically connect with 100,000 others.
This means that the interconnections a brain cell
can make are: 1 followed by 271 0's.
Each brain neuron has over 100 trillion connections

2. THE
EVOLUTIONARY
BRAINS
Dr Paul McLean has demonstrated that the
human brain is made up of three distinct parts
which developed at different times in our
evolution. The so-called "reptilian" brain is the
oldest part of our brains and is responsible for
our most basic responses such as dealing with
threats. Our "mammalian" brain is the seat of
our emotions. Our "thinking" brain is, in
evolutionary terms, very young, having evolved
some 40,000 years ago. It is the source of our
ego, our ability to think about ourselves.

The 3 Evolutionary Layers of the Human Brain
The โ€œTriuneโ€
Brain
1.The REPTILIAN brain controls the
body's vital functions such as heart rate,
breathing, body temperature and balance. It
first appeared in fish nearly 500 million years
ago.
2.The LIMBIC brain can record
memories of behaviours that produce
agreeable and disagreeable experiences,
so it is responsible for what are called
emotions in human beings.The main
structures of the limbic brain are the
hippocampus, the amygdala, and the
hypothalamus.
3.The NEOCORTEX first assumed importance in primates and culminated
in the two large hemispheres of the human brain. These have been responsible
for the development of human language, abstract thought, imagination, and
consciousness. The neocortex has almost infinite learning abilities.

3. LEFT AND
RIGHT BRAINS
Roger Sperry was the first to explain the division
of the cerebral cortex in our brains into two
sides, left and right. The left side of the brain was
found to be responsible for logical thinking; the
right side for imaginative thinking. Almost
overnight, Sperry changed the way we thought
about thinking. No longer was logical and linear
thought seen as the purpose of thinking; instead
a balance between right and left was believed to
be the secret to maximising our mental abilities.

4. THE
CONSCIOUS
BRAIN
The conscious brain is that part of our brains that
deals with what we call "reality". It uses the
senses to interpret and analyse information from
the world around us. This is done through
perception, association, evaluation, and
decision-taking. However, the analytical
conscious brain is very limited. Despite the
power of the brain, we can only hold about 7 or
8 different thoughts in our head at any one time.

5. THE SUB-
CONSCIOUS
BRAIN
The sub-conscious brain is the storehouse of all
our past thoughts. This is the source of the most
creative use of our brains. For example, if we set
goals for our brain, the sub-conscious part of our
brain will supply us with information in line with
those goals through a cluster of cells known as
the Reticular Activating System. Similarly, if we
present a problem to our brains, the sub-
conscious brain will work by itself to find
solutions as a way of restoring its balance.

6. THE SUPRA-
CONSCIOUS
BRAIN
In recent years, there has become a growing
realization that the functions of the conscious
and sub-conscious brain are only a small part of
what constitutes our mindโ€™s functions. This is the
realization that the mind is something bigger
than the physical brain. For example, you have
over 200 trillion cells in your body all functioning
in a healthy person in harmony and doing their
own thing without any conscious input from you
or your brain. So what keeps these cells working?
A superconscious mind that links to a
consciousness that extends beyond our brains,
our bodies and our senses, what some people
call the "supra-conscious" brain.

7. MAXIMISING
OUR BRAINS
We maximise our potential when we maximise
the power of our brains. Here are some ways to
do this. Use both left and right brains to dream
and plan your goals. Align the 3 evolutionary
brains by thinking about your goals, feeling
passionately about them, and taking action. Tap
in to the creative power of your brain to make
better decisions and find better solutions to
problems. Listen to what your brain is telling you
through intuition. Recognise that there is a
powerful consciousness beyond normal thought.
There is more to you than you think

THE RETICULAR
ACTIVATING
SYSTEM
The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a group of cells
in the brain which monitors sensory messages to the
brain. It is a natural filtering device which allows only
personally profitable data or threats to get through.
A simple analogy of how the RAS works is a busy
airport terminal lounge where you may be waiting to
board a plane. You are largely oblivious to the noise
and sounds around you, but if you have programmed
your brain to listen out for the name of your flight,
you will hear it when it is called.
The RAS is the key reason why we
need to feed in our goals to our
brains and then leave the brain to
work by itself. It is like an
evolutionary survival system, where
only relevant information for our
survival is allowed to get through
while irrelevant information is left
to die by the wayside.

THE MYTH OF THE 10% BRAIN
There is a popular theory that we only use 10% of our
brains. In a survey of school teachers in the UK and
Netherland in 2012, around 47% endorsed the myth. A
similar survey by the Michael J Fox Foundation for
Parkinson's Research found the figure to be 65%.
So is it true?
Almost certainly not. Christian Jarrett, author of "Great
Myths of the Brain", says that, when we suffer brain
damage, it has devastating effects - not what you would
expect if we were only using a small fraction of the
organ.
Christian suggests that the reason we believe it is
because it gives us hope that we can achieve super-hero
powers as seen by the stars of films like "Limitless" and
TV series, like "Heroes".
The myth probably grew from a mis-quote of American
psychologist, William James. James did not say that the
average person only used 10% of his brain, but "only
10% of his latent mental ability".
Do we only use just 10% of our brains? Or is
it something else?

Word
Thought and the human brain are the defining features of human beings. But we now know that
what we can do with our brains is not limited. Like our brains, our consciousness is infinite and so
is our potential.

The 3lb Universe Introduction: Because it is the place from where we create physically, mentally, and emotionally, the human brain is the powerhouse of our potential. If we want to maximise what we are capable of, we could do no better than maximise the potential of what Judith Hooper and Dick Teresi call the "3lb universe". In this topic, weโ€™ll look at 7 key features of doing this.
  • 3. 3 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe AShort History of the Brain Our knowledge of the brain's potential is very recent. Until brain surgery allowed us to look inside the brain and discover some of its workings, man had been largely ignorant of how the brain functioned. A Brief History of the Brain 1.The Ancient Greeks thought the mind was disembodied spirit. They believed thoughts came from the heart. 2. In the Renaissance, men believed the mind was in the head but not in the brain. 3. In the 1930's and 40's, the brain was believed to be like a computer: a data storage organ and calculator. 4. In the 1960's and 70's, it became clear that most people vastly under-use the power of their brains. A lot about the brain is still unknown.
  • 4. 4 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 1. THE POWER OF THE BRAIN Thanks to neuro-psychologist, Petr Anokhin, we now know that the human brain is unbelievably powerful. There are 10 billion neurons and 12 trillion nerve cells in each human brain and each cell can physically connect with 100,000 others. This means that the interconnections a brain cell can make are: 1 followed by 271 0's. Each brain neuron has over 100 trillion connections Flickr attribution: /hinkelstone/2435823037/
  • 5. 5 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe THE SIZE OF THE BRAIN The estimated interconnections a brain cell can make are: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000,000000,000,00. • 6. 6 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 2. THE EVOLUTIONARY BRAINS Dr Paul McLean has demonstrated that the human brain is made up of three distinct parts which developed at different times in our evolution. The so-called "reptilian" brain is the oldest part of our brains and is responsible for our most basic responses such as dealing with threats. Our "mammalian" brain is the seat of our emotions. Our "thinking" brain is, in evolutionary terms, very young, having evolved some 40,000 years ago. It is the source of our ego, our ability to think about ourselves. • 7. 7 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe The 3 Evolutionary Layers of the Human Brain The โ€œTriuneโ€ Brain 1.The REPTILIAN brain controls the body's vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, body temperature and balance. It first appeared in fish nearly 500 million years ago. 2.The LIMBIC brain can record memories of behaviours that produce agreeable and disagreeable experiences, so it is responsible for what are called emotions in human beings. The main structures of the limbic brain are the hippocampus, the amygdala, and the hypothalamus. 3.The NEOCORTEX first assumed importance in primates and culminated in the two large hemispheres of the human brain. These have been responsible for the development of human language, abstract thought, imagination, and consciousness. The neocortex has almost infinite learning abilities.
  • 8. 8 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 3. LEFT AND RIGHT BRAINS Roger Sperry was the first to explain the division of the cerebral cortex in our brains into two sides, left and right. The left side of the brain was found to be responsible for logical thinking; the right side for imaginative thinking. Almost overnight, Sperry changed the way we thought about thinking. No longer was logical and linear thought seen as the purpose of thinking; instead a balance between right and left was believed to be the secret to maximising our mental abilities. • 9. 9 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 4. THE CONSCIOUS BRAIN The conscious brain is that part of our brains that deals with what we call "reality". It uses the senses to interpret and analyse information from the world around us. This is done through perception, association, evaluation, and decision-taking. However, the analytical conscious brain is very limited. Despite the power of the brain, we can only hold about 7 or 8 different thoughts in our head at any one time. The conscious brain thrives on concentration Flickr attribution: /sethph88/20414935512/
  • 10. 10 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 5. THE SUB- CONSCIOUS BRAIN The sub-conscious brain is the storehouse of all our past thoughts. This is the source of the most creative use of our brains. For example, if we set goals for our brain, the sub-conscious part of our brain will supply us with information in line with those goals through a cluster of cells known as the Reticular Activating System. Similarly, if we present a problem to our brains, the sub- conscious brain will work by itself to find solutions as a way of restoring its balance. Your sub-conscious speaks when you are not thinking Flickr attribution: /andy_bernay-roman/2994846647/
  • 11. 11 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 6. THE SUPRA- CONSCIOUS BRAIN In recent years, there has become a growing realization that the functions of the conscious and sub-conscious brain are only a small part of what constitutes our mindโ€™s functions. This is the realization that the mind is something bigger than the physical brain. For example, you have over 200 trillion cells in your body all functioning in a healthy person in harmony and doing their own thing without any conscious input from you or your brain. So what keeps these cells working? A superconscious mind that links to a consciousness that extends beyond our brains, our bodies and our senses, what some people call the "supra-conscious" brain. The energy of your brain is part of a universal life energy Flickr attribution: /kozumel/4918575268/
  • 12. 12 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe 7. MAXIMISING OUR BRAINS We maximise our potential when we maximise the power of our brains. Here are some ways to do this. Use both left and right brains to dream and plan your goals. Align the 3 evolutionary brains by thinking about your goals, feeling passionately about them, and taking action. Tap in to the creative power of your brain to make better decisions and find better solutions to problems. Listen to what your brain is telling you through intuition. Recognise that there is a powerful consciousness beyond normal thought. There is more to you than you think Flickr attribution: /rundwolf/6616908239/
  • 13. 13 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe THE RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a group of cells in the brain which monitors sensory messages to the brain. It is a natural filtering device which allows only personally profitable data or threats to get through. A simple analogy of how the RAS works is a busy airport terminal lounge where you may be waiting to board a plane. You are largely oblivious to the noise and sounds around you, but if you have programmed your brain to listen out for the name of your flight, you will hear it when it is called. The RAS is the key reason why we need to feed in our goals to our brains and then leave the brain to work by itself. It is like an evolutionary survival system, where only relevant information for our survival is allowed to get through while irrelevant information is left to die by the wayside.
  • 14. 14 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe THE MYTH OF THE 10% BRAIN There is a popular theory that we only use 10% of our brains. In a survey of school teachers in the UK and Netherland in 2012, around 47% endorsed the myth. A similar survey by the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research found the figure to be 65%. So is it true? Almost certainly not. Christian Jarrett, author of "Great Myths of the Brain", says that, when we suffer brain damage, it has devastating effects - not what you would expect if we were only using a small fraction of the organ. Christian suggests that the reason we believe it is because it gives us hope that we can achieve super-hero powers as seen by the stars of films like "Limitless" and TV series, like "Heroes". The myth probably grew from a mis-quote of American psychologist, William James. James did not say that the average person only used 10% of his brain, but "only 10% of his latent mental ability". Do we only use just 10% of our brains? Or is it something else?
  • 15. 15 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme The 3lb Universe This has been a Slide Topic from Manage Train Learn AFinal Word Thought and the human brain are the defining features of human beings. But we now know that what we can do with our brains is not limited. Like our brains, our consciousness is infinite and so is our potential.
