music that has been produced to be
used in worshiping God, but not in
a liturgical setting.

22. *2. PASTORES
Pastores is Christmas
season folk dance and song
practiced in many parts of
Samar.

23. The pastores (shepherds) recounts
the story of the shepherds who visited
the child Jesus in the manger through a
song. They go house to house singing
the daygon (worship). In some place
the song is also
called pastores or pastorada. These are
songs of happy mood with a uniform
message that tells the people to rejoice
because the Savior was born.

24. *3. MORO –MORO / KOMEDYA
Komedya is colorful theatrical
tradition in the Philippines that
describes the conflicts between
the Muslims and the Christians.
It was used by the Spanish as a
method to spread Christianity in
the country.

25. *Moro-Moro is a type of Secular
Komedya which portrays the clash
between the Muslims and the
Christians where the forbidden
romance between the prince and the
princess is settled by having the non-
Christian be converted to Christianity
or by his or her death followed by a
resurrection through divine
intervention.

26. *4. SENAKULO
*The Senakulo (from the
Spanish cenaculo) is a Lenten play that
depicts events from the Old and New
Testaments related to the life,
sufferings, and death of Christ.
*It takes at least eight nights -
from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday -
to present the play.

27. Street senakulos is another form of
penance where the people are walking
with the procession. People near the
church wait eagerly to witness the
reenactment.
Most anticipated among the
episodes are the judgment of Jesus, the
Crucifixion and His Seven Last Words.
Spectators may range from devotees to
the merely curious.

28. *5. PABASA NG PASYON
*Pabasa is known as a religious ritual
chanting the words from the Pasyon, a
narrative book that contains the life of
Christ.
*It is a way for Catholics to repent to their
sins and seek forgiveness from God during
Lenten Season. It is form of meditation,
expression of faith to God and activity
made with the fellow community.

29. Traditionally, the chanting
ritual is adapted with the
Church’s style of singing
religious songs and incorporating
it to the Pasyon. This activity
lasts up to 1-3 days which
depends on the flow of the
chanting.

30. *6. SALUBONG
'''Salubong''' is an Easter
Sunday pre-dawn ritual that
reenacts the Risen Christ's
meet.

31. *7. FLORES DE MAYO
*The merry month of May is
when Flores de Mayo is
celebrated by the Filipino
communities throughout the
country.

32. *Flores de Mayo “Flowers of May,”
sometimes called Flores de Maria
which means Flowers of Mary is a
celebration in honor of the Blessed
Virgin Mary.
*Flores de Mayo is believed to have
originated in the mid-1800s when
the Vatican proclaimed doctrines
about the Immaculate Conception.

33. *8. STA. CRUZAN
*Santacruzan is the highlight of the
celebration of Flores de Mayo
celebrated in honor of St. Helena,
the mother of Constantine the Great
– the first Christian emperor, who
found the relics of the True Cross or
Holy Cross.

34. Queen Helena was in search of the
True Cross of Jesus. At the Calvary,
she found 3 crosses, when she was 75
years old. She asked her sick servants
to touch each cross and one of the three
crosses she found, had caused the
miraculous healing of the sick servants.
That cross was believed to be the same
cross where Jesus Christ died.

35. The Santacruzan starts with a novena
to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the
rosary prayer being offered every day.
After the novena, a procession will follow
which will culminate on the ninth day, the
highlight of the festivity.
The Santacruzan procession is joined
in by beautiful ladies with their escorts
with embellished floats and ornate gowns,
representing various religious characters.
