Unit IV
OVERVIEW
Music flourished even more during the 20th Century in the Philippines. This is the
time when music of the west influenced Philippine music and theater. Through the
music and theater, one will discover how Filipinos love their country and how they
learned to express different forms of their love through music and performance.
The learner performs examples of Philippine music and theater forms alone and with
others in clear tone and correct pitch, rhythm, expression, and style.
OBJECTIVES
 Identifies musical characteristics of selected Philippine festivals and theatrical
forms through video or live performances
 Describe the origin and cultural background of selected Philippine Festival/s
 Describe how the music contributes to the performance of the musical
production
 Describes how a specific idea or story is communicated through Philippine
Traditional Musical Forms and Philippine Theater Musical Forms
 Improvises music appointment in relation to a particular Philippine Festival
 Performs selection/s from chosen Philippine musical theater

We are surrounded with festivities and celebrations.
Express our thanksgiving to the gods.
We celebrate almost every aspect of our lives - from birthdays to death celebrations.

KAAMULAN FESTIVAL
 Celebrates the customs and
traditions of the seven tribal
groups that originally inhabited
Bukidnon region: Matigsalug,
Tigwahanun, Higaunu, Umayamnun,
Manobo, Bukidnon, & Talaandig.
 Telling legendaries, reliving
ancient rituals, playin' & listenin' to
ethnic music, doing traditional
dances.
 Colorful Floats and costumes with
vibrancy and eclectic designs.
MASSKARA FESTIVAL

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
 Derived from the word "Mandayaw" w/c means good, valuable, superior
 Celebrated every year of August, Davao City.
 Festival of *thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, *the wealth of culture, *the bounties of
harvest and *serenity of living.

implements: fruits, flowers,
vegetables, rice, corn grains as
tribute to the gods.

TINUOM FESTIVAL Madalag, AKlan
The local word “tinuom” pertains to a local highland
dweller‟s recipe with native chicken as main original
ingredient. Typically wrapped in leaves with other basic
ingredients such as salt, pepper, onion, lemongrass and
tomatoes. All the ingredients get cooked in the chicken
broth itself which in turn becomes a very flavorful soup.
This festival paved the way for all the 17 towns in the
province to showcase their own take on „tinuom.”

We are surrounded with festivities and celebrations. Express our thanksgiving to the gods. We celebrate almost every aspect of our lives - from birthdays to death celebrations. RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL  Fiesta Island of the Pacific  From Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao  Fiesta is part of our culture PAHIYAS FESTIVAL  15th of May  Lucban, Philippines  Honors San Isidro Labrador  Thanksgiving for a rich and bountiful harvest  "KIPING" = time consuming & tedious work.  Materials: Banana (saba), Talisay(umbrella tree), Kakao(cocoa) OBANDO FERTILITY RITE  a dance ritual and catholic festival  celebrated every May  Obando, Bulacan  Obando's 3 main patron saints: San Pascual, Santa Clara, Our lady of Salambao  this fertility dance is both a festival and a prayful appeal  Costume: ladies wear Filipinia, Kimona't Saya

ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL  3rd week of January  Kalibo, Aklan  Honors Sto. Niño  Portrays Aetas  Covering their body w/ soot & paints their faces black and other colors  Costume=Diff. colored costumes designed with walis tambo, reeds, indigenous materials (ex. Rattan) SINULOG FESTIVAL  3rd Sunday of January  Cebu City  Honors Sto. Niño  Costume=Brightly colored costumes made out of the most ornate materials  Accessories

Niño  Colorful costumes and headdresses are made to present this celebration full of joy  "Dagyang" means "to make happy" FLORES DE MAAYO  "Flowers in May"  most popular and biggest celebration during May  Offer flowers to the Virgin Mary in catholic churches  Santacruzan to honor "Elena of Constantinople" and her son "Constantine the Great"  Queen‟s legendary quest for Jesus' cross in Jerusalem.  They hold pageants for the best well-dressed character

PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL  Month of February  Baguio City  Parade of Floats  Costumes= Flower-related, butterflies, bees, pots, water canisters, etc.. KAAMULAN FESTIVAL  Celebrates the customs and traditions of the seven tribal groups that originally inhabited Bukidnon region: Matigsalug, Tigwahanun, Higaunu, Umayamnun, Manobo, Bukidnon, & Talaandig.  Telling legendaries, reliving ancient rituals, playin' & listenin' to ethnic music, doing traditional dances.  Colorful Floats and costumes with vibrancy and eclectic designs. MASSKARA FESTIVAL  3rd weekend of October  Tacloban City "City of Smiles"  Smiling Faces even when faced with challenges.  Costumes=diff. colorful fabrics and patterns, woven together to create ingenious pieces of inticrate designs, embellished with sequins and textures feathers, multicolored beads and etc...

THEATRICAL FORMS These are theatrical forms that are widely known in the Philippines and throughout the country and Asia. COMEDIA OR MORO-MORO  Created by Spanish priests  Love-affair between a Muslim-Filipino prince and a Christian princess  Religious differences  Costumes=Gaudy and loud colored costumes
