Lithuania is a small country located in Northern Europe. It is about 300 km across and can be driven across in under 5 hours. Lithuania has a population of 3.5 million people and was once part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a powerful state that formed a union with Poland in 1385. Lithuania declared independence from Russia in 1918 but was occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II until restoring its independence in 1990. Today Lithuania is a member of the European Union.
