During World War I, the Council of Lithuania declared the Act of Independence on February 16, 1918, restoring Lithuania as an independent democratic state. The Act was signed by 20 members under the chairmanship of Jonas Basanavičius. In 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR adopted the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on March 11th, formally declaring Lithuania's independence from the Soviet Union. Lithuania has since joined the United Nations and European Union and celebrates its independence annually on February 16th.
