Emblem of the Republic of Lithuania <ul><li>The coat of arms of Lithuania, consisting of an armor-clad knight on horseback holding an olden sword and shield, is also known as Vytis (&quot;the Chaser&quot;). The Lithuanian coat of arms is one of the oldest national coat of arms in Europe . It is one of very few, containing symbolism adopted from ducal portrait seals rather than from coat of arms of dynasties, which is the case for most European countries. </li></ul>

  14. 23. <ul><li>L OCATION. AREA. BORDERS From the cartographic point of view, Lithuania is a Central European rather than an Eastern European country, as is sometimes groundlessly claimed. Located in the center of Europe, Lithuania is situated at one of the largest crossroads of the continent. </li></ul>
  15. 24. <ul><li>Lithuania is one of the states in the East ringing the Baltic Sea. It ‘ s the Cen t re of Europe (18 km from Vilnius). To the north it borders on the Republic of Latvia to the east and south it borders on Byelorussia, to the southwest - on Poland and on districal of Kaliningrad. Administratively, Lithuania is divided into 44 regions, and 52 districts; there are 92 cities and 22 urban-type settlements. </li></ul>

The state power in Lithuania belongs to the Seimas (Parliament), President of the Republic, Government and Court. Powers are limited according to the constitution, adopted in 1992 by a referendum. The territory of the state is one and not divisible. </li></ul>

The average temperature of January is -4.8 0 C , of July is + 17.2 0 C . </li></ul><ul><li>The highest temperature +37.4 0 C (July 1994), the lowest temperature -42.7 0 C (February 1956) . </li></ul><ul><li>The greatest amount of precipitation falls in August, at the seaside - in October. </li></ul><ul><li>The vegetation season in Lithuania lasts from 169 to 202 days . </li></ul>

The tradition of eating well is inherited from the ancestors who would say &quot;he who eats well, works well&quot;. Lithuanian traditional cuisine took shape over many centuries and was much influenced by cultural contacts with neighboring nations . </li></ul>
  20. 29. Weaving <ul><li>Weaving is one of the oldest Lithuanian folk crafts. Some of the decorative cloth is still woven today. Of all the Lithuanian national fabric is the most valuable and most characteristic bands and aprons. They have the wealth and colorful patterns. </li></ul>

  26. 36. TRAKAI NATIONAL PARK <ul><li>It was designated in 1992 to embrace the historic city of Trakai, some 25 k m outside Vilnius, and the forests, lakes and villages in its environs. The total area of the park is 8 th k m . The most significant historical monuments the Ancient Castle, erected on one of the island of lake Galve. Today it houses the Museum of Ethnography. </li></ul>

  37. 60. The national museum of Rumsiskes <ul><li>A town of 1.500 on the shores of the Kaunas Marios (Sea), it is an idyllic location with the Praviena stream cutting through its woods. Its location is in comfortable proximity of 18 km from the city of Kaunas, just after an exit from the Vilnius - Kaunas Highway. </li></ul>

A small but a very vivid relic of our past rests on a tiny hill and reminds us of our cruel and glorious history - uprisings, wars, revolutions, occupations. You have seen so much blood and cruelty! </li></ul>

  40. 69. Druskininkai <ul><li>Druskininkai is a spa town on the Nem u n as River in southern Lithuania, close to the borders of Belarus and Poland. The city of Druskininkai has a population of 18 thousands and dates back as a spa resort to the 19th century. </li></ul><ul><li>The town is located at the Ratnyčia River estuary to the Nemunas River and is surrounded by a natural forest reserve. The town is situated in a picturesque landscape with rivers, lakes, hills and forests. </li></ul>

Grūtas Park is located near Druskininkai <ul><li>The park unofficially known as Stalin's World; </li></ul><ul><li>is a sculpture garden of Soviet-era statues and an exposition of other Soviet ideological relics from the times of the Lithuanian SSR. After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, various Soviet statues were taken down and dumped in different places. Malinauskas requested the Lithuanian authorities to grant him the possession of the sculptures, so that he could build a privately-financed museum. Many of its features are recreations of Soviet Gulag prison camps: wooden paths, guard towers, and barbed-wire fences. </li></ul>

EDUCATION IN LITHUANIA <ul><li>Primary school -1 st to 4 th forms; </li></ul><ul><li>Basic school -5 th -10 th forms; </li></ul><ul><li>General education secondary school -1 st -12 th forms; </li></ul><ul><li>Gymnasium corresponding to the 9 th to 12 th forms of secondary school; </li></ul><ul><li>There are also special institutions for children with special needs, youth schools which provide basic education and adult education institutions. </li></ul>

EDUCATION IN LITHUANIA <ul><li>Secondary education ends in taking one compulsory and at least three optional examinations; </li></ul><ul><li>Successful students are awarded a School Leaving Certificate (Brandos atestatas) ; </li></ul><ul><li>Education is free in all state secondary school; </li></ul><ul><li>Compulsory education last until the age 16; </li></ul><ul><li>Pupils can stay at school for twelve years but some of them leave school having finished the tenth form; </li></ul><ul><li>These pupils usually go to vocational junior colleges or trade schools where they can get both secondary education and the qualifications; </li></ul>

EDUCATION IN LITHUANIA <ul><li>In Lithuania children go to school five days a week; </li></ul><ul><li>The school years begins in 1st of September and ends in the middle of June; </li></ul><ul><li>Educational process time for pupils: </li></ul><ul><li>1-5 forms - 32 weeks, </li></ul><ul><li>6-9 forms – 36 weeks, </li></ul><ul><li>10 and 12 forms – 34 weeks. </li></ul><ul><li>There are 4 school holidays during the year: A utumn -1 week; W inter ( Christmas ) -2 weeks, S pring ( Easter ) -1 week, Summer (12-14 weeks) </li></ul>

EDUCATION IN LITHUANIA <ul><li>There are optionally three terms or two semestres in the school year. </li></ul><ul><li>45-minute lesson duration ; </li></ul><ul><li>Basic subjects is such as Lithuanian, Mathematics, History, Science, Computer studies, 2 modern foreign languages , Music, Physical Education, Technology, Art are included in the curriculums a t all schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Religious E ducation is provided for all pupils, but parents can choose between religion or ethnics. </li></ul>

After three years, 1947 autumn, it was reopened in another location. In 1959 began construction of the current school building and the school has become a basic school . </li></ul><ul><li>The school has attained a lot of important people in Lithuania. </li></ul>

W hy the school called Vinc o Zemaici o school? <ul><li>Vinc as Ž emaitis (1896 - 1983) - Lithuanian forester, an ethnographer and public figure had </li></ul><ul><li>studied in this school. </li></ul><ul><li>He was born and lived here until 1944. </li></ul><ul><li>In 2001, Vilkaviski s municipality gave to the school the Vincas Zemaitis name . </li></ul><ul><li>There are Vinc as Zemaitis Museum in the school . </li></ul>
