Use of case pairs can potentially improve the efficiency and effectiveness of...Poh-Sun Goh
My masters thesis in education (2012), part of the 2 year Master in Health Professions Education program at Maastricht University. The focus of this experimental study was to determine whether compare and contrast practice with similar and contrasting case pairs improved the efficiency and effectiveness of radiology training. The results of this study were promising, and have resulted in continuing work to systematically build up and utilise case based repositories of radiology images in undergraduate and postgraduate training for competency, proficiency and mastery using the principles of deliberate practice These knowledge repositories currently contain over 3000 cases, which demonstrate the full spectrum of any given radiological/clinical presentation in the major diagnostic themes within neuroradiology, not just exemplar or outlier examples. We are using neuroradiology training as an case study to build a comprehensive knowledge repository to support training in other specialties within radiology, and as a template for a recently launched pilot project to build an institution wide repository to support clinical training in the different specialties at our academic medical centre. This knowledge repository will be linked to our undergraduate and residency curricular maps.

These are the slides from the presentation I gave at The Network: Towards Unity for Health conference in Fortaleza, Brazil (2014).
The talk looked at how we're trying to prepare health professional students for an increasingly complex health system, but we're still using teaching methods that originated centuries ago. I ask questions about how we can change teaching practices to take into account the characteristics we expect of our graduates. I discussed the importance of taking a critical stance towards the implementation of technological solutions, and to be careful of making assumptions about the use of technology to solve all problems.
Time to revisit the whole health professional education based on the changes in the technology economic and socio-political changes that are occurring.

A/Professor Jia-Lin Yang has made a distinctive contribution by creating and delivering a ‘scientist-based’, integrative professional, career and ePortfolio learning (IPCEL) curriculum for senior undergraduate cancer science (PATH3208) students. His interactive ePortfolio approach encourages students to think and act like a scientist and to develop the understanding and professional skills for a career in science, providing students with the confidence and capabilities needed ‘to be’ a scientist and leading to careers in science. He used self-efficacy assessment to evaluate and foster student authentic learning. The application of the interactive eportfolio has synergised student 'scientist-based' integrative professional and career development learning. The consequence of the IPCEL approach on students by the end of the course is a high proportion of them get into postgraduate research studies, of whom over half are female, because the students have been motivated as evident by high academic performance, high satisfaction and high self-efficacy.

This presentation session will outline how an online, self-directed, course titled ‘Diagnostic Reasoning and Care Planning’ was developed for undergraduate second year nursing students. The course was delivered in Semester 1 2014 and completed by 220 students. The course design successfully employed a range of tools in Blackboard to engage students in active, self-directed learning, supported by a series of scaffolded learning activities completed online in Blackboard, with students receiving timely, effective feedback via Grade Centre as activities were completed.

A nurse educator may to foster learners’ cognitive development by equipping them with problem-solving and questioning skills, doing research and information processing to help them to actively learn, search for new information, solve problems, and review previous experiences to have a better understanding (Wilson, 2016). They may use this process to know learners’ ability to recall information, assess learners’ ability to understand, see how learners can apply the knowledge and skills in a current situation, analyze skills how they can differentiate opinions and facts, how they combine different concepts and form a good structure to help develop new meaning, and evaluate the learner's ability to perceive vital concepts.
Lecture teaching strategy is an effective and straightforward way of quickly impacting students with knowledge and is effective when introducing new material (Xu, 2016). It addresses cognitive domain.
Lecture teaching strategy becomes effective because the instructor gives elaborate details of the course and engage student. Through student and teacher interaction, educator is able to explain, demonstrate, and answer learners’ question hence foster their learning.
For learners who prefer to listen to information, lecture teaching strategy and aural learning style would be appropriate. This is because a student may learn better through hearing and responding to the lecturer rather than using notes. Also, learners may read loudly to improve their understanding (Ocepek et al., 2013).
The lecture strategy may be implemented by clearly stating the instructor’s expectation from learners, be prepared to highlight the key concept to enable learners to keenly follow, ask a question to engage the student as well as ask for their feedback.
Educators can use a language that is understood by all learners when using the lecture teaching strategy to pass information to learners. Effective cross-cultural communication would be essential to promote cultural sensitivity by avoiding slangs, and avoiding cultural biases (Ladha et al., 2018).
The psychomotor domain can be developed by creating learning activities such as acquiring tools and master learning objectives or outcomes (Wilson, 2016). This domain may be used to develop good learning and teaching skills as well as resources compatible to a lea ...
Students use different styles or ways of receiving and managing information during learning. VARK learning style was developed based on the physiological aspect of students in the form of sensory modalities. This survey research was conducted at 30 elementary schools in Ambon City. The data of student learning was obtained by filling out the learning style questionnaire developed by Fleming. The results showed that 88.7% of students used a learning style (unimodal) and 11.3% of students combined more than one learning style (multimodal). For the unimodal learning styles, kinesthetic is most prevalent in male and female students with a percentage of 58.6%, whereas visuals are least found with a percentage of 6%. The study also revealed that multimodal learning styles were found at all bimodal, trimodal, and quadmodal combinations. The more blend of learning style, hence the frequency of determination of student learning style even less.. The combination of multiple unimodal learning styles with large numbers will result in multimodal learning styles with large numbers.

The Effect of STEM Project Based Learning on Self-Efficacy among High-School ...Nader Ale Ebrahim
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is increase effectiveness, create meaningful learning and influence student attitudes in future career pursuit. There are several studies in the literature reporting different aspects of STEM into a PjBL pedagogy. However, the effect of implementing STEM PjBL in terms of improving students’ skills in self-efficacy levels in physics mechanics at high school level has not been demonstrated as expected in the previous literature. This study followed a quasi-experimental research method. Bandura’s social cognitive theory is used to assess and compare the effect of STEM PjBL with conventional teaching method on students’ self-efficacy level in learning physics among over 100 high school students. The result illustrated that STEM PjBL improve students’ self-efficacy to solve physics problem. Also, the study proposes a guideline for future research.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
