Is your PHP app slowing to a crawl? PHP is a powerful programming language that powers roughly 80% of the internet, but it’s unfortunately subject to performance problems – as we all know. Luckily, for thousands of PHP-based applications, some relatively simple changes can lead to noticeable improvements in performance.
NGINX has greatly improved application performance for more than 150 million sites in production today. Using NGINX greatly improves the performance of PHP apps with features such as caching, load balancing, HTTP/2 support, and more, included in open source NGINX software and in our commercial-grade application delivery platform NGINX Plus.

Docker is an amazing tool, but unless you work with it every day, you're probably left with a ton of questions. What's a container? What's an image? What's the difference between Docker, Machine, Compose, and Swarm? Why the heck should I care? Well, Docker makes it easier than ever to deploy and scale your applications and services. In addition, it lets you simulate your production environment on your local machine without heavy virtual machines. In this talk, we'll explore the basics of Docker, create a custom image for a web application, create a group of containers, and look at how you can put your apps into production on various cloud providers. At the end of the talk, you'll have the knowledge you need to put this to use with your own applications.

It's no news or secret that containers are good at providing multiple and different testing environments, or at offering a way of deploying apps and services that are completely decoupled from the host OS. E.g., spin up a distro X container, check if code compiles there (and dispose of it).
How about the opposite? I.e., having one (or more!) stateful and persistent environment(s), tightly coupled with the host and sharing as much information and configuration as possible with it. Why? Well for running that one app, which is only available for another distro, with just a click on a desktop launcher icon. Or for doing all kind of experiments, inside our development environment, without risking the stability and the consistency of the system. Well, yes, containers can do these things too. And in openSUSE, we have both toolbox and distrobox, that can make these examples, just reality!
In this talk, we'll explain what they are and how to use them for spawning development and application environments, based either on the same distro you have on the host or on different ones, and inside of which you still have all your file. A working space that, despite being containerized, you can access seamlessly from within GNOME Builder or open new terminals directly inside of it and create launcher icons for apps installed in there.
We'll offer (more) examples and show how this can be very useful, both on immutable (like MicroOS) and on "traditional" (like Tumbleweed) systems.
An overview of Docker and Linux containers. There are three parts:
An introduction to Docker and containers
A demo that the audience can try out
An overview of the various vendors and groups in this space
The demo is meant to be a simple, step-by-step recipe that introduces the basic commands and ends by spinning up a node.js app using two linked containers: node and redis.
The final section explores the companies and groups that are working on containers, either complementing Docker's contributions or in direct competition with them.
Introdution to Docker (theory and hands on) dbCafé - dbTrentoCristian Consonni
In this presentation I will introduce Docker, an "an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software containers, by providing an additional layer of abstraction and automation of operating-system-level virtualization on Linux." (source: Wikipedia). The presentation has an initial theoretical part and a second more practical, hands on part.
It is a simple introduction to the containers world, starting from LXC to arrive to the Docker Platform.
The presentation is focused on the first steps in the docker environment and the scenarious from a developer point of view.
From Arm to Z: Building, Shipping, and Running a Multi-platform Docker Swarm ...Docker, Inc.
We live in a multi-platform world, and who doesn't want their project to run on all of them? The last few DockerCon events have covered the introduction of multi-platform image capabilities into the Docker registry and engine releases. Now it's time to put these features to good use building applications across architectures and running them all in a heterogeneous Docker Swarm! In this talk we'll cover the new `docker manifest` command for making multi-architecture images; how to emulate architectures in docker containers on your own machine; and give a live demonstration of these capabilities with a Docker Swarm consisting of workers of different CPU architectures, including armhf, ppc64le, s390x, and x86_64. We'll also share some pointers for making sure your project is multi-platform ready! Three Takeaways: 1. Attendees will be introduced to manifest lists and how to create multi-arch images using the new 'docker manifest' command. 2. Attendees will learn how to easily create and deploy a basic multi-arch service using multi-platform images. 3. Bonus: Attendees will learn how to run non-native docker containers on their systems.
The Dockerfile Explosion and the Need for Higher Level Tools by Gareth RushgroveDocker, Inc.
Dockerfiles are great. They provide a zero-barrier-to-entry format for
describing a single Docker image which is immediately clear to anyone
reading them. But with that simplicity comes problems that become
apparent as your adoption of Docker gathers pace.
* Dockerfiles can inherit from other docker images, but images are not
Dockerfiles
* Dockerfile provides no built-in mechanism for creating abstractions,
so as usage grows identical or similar instructions can be duplicated
across many files
* The Docker APi exposes a build endpoint, but the API is very course,
taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual
instructions
* Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere
The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an
explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised
space and performance benefits.
The hype around Docker is big, but does Docker live up to it? What is that this new tool excites developers and operators in unison? In this talk I will show what makes Docker different and what the vision behind it is. I will also give some practical insights from using Docker in development and production and demonstrate why I started to “dockerize" everything.
Slides for my talk at the Blue4IT meeting in Utrecht. It shows you how to run everything in a Docker container. You can run the DTAP environment, the build environment and the development environment (including IDE) in Docker.
Launch the First Process in Linux SystemJian-Hong Pan
The session: https://coscup.org/2022/en/session/AGCMDJ
After Linux kernel boots, it will try to launch first process “init” in User Space. Then, the system begins the featured journey of the Linux distribution.
This sharing takes Busybox as the example and shows that how does Linux kernel find the “init” which directs to the Busybox. And, what will Busybox do and how to get the console. Try to make it like a simple Linux system.
Before Linux kernel launches “init” process, the file system and storage corresponding drivers/modules must be loaded to find the “init”. Besides, to mount the root file system correctly, the kernel boot command must include the root device and file system format parameters.
On the other hand, the Busybox directed from “init” is a lightweight program, but has rich functions, just like a Swiss Army Knife. So, it is usually used on the simple environment, like embedded Linux system.
This sharing will have a demo on a virtual machine first, then on the Raspberry Pi.

Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
