However, you soon realize that you want to support not only one version of the particular technology, and the images are not based on one distribution only. Then you easily find yourself developing and maintaining hundred of container images or more. Something similar happened to us and I admit we did not know all the tricks from the first minute. Come and hear what issues we met during the way, so you do not repeat them as well. 1,2편에서 다룬 chroot와 pivot_root를 통해서 root filesystem을 isolation하였습니다. 마운트 네임스페이스는 파일시스템 마운트를 isolation 하는 것으로 이미 pivot_root에서도 사용하였지만, mount 처리를 격리함으로써 컨테이너 내부의 파일시스템 구조를 독립적으로 유지합니다. 실제 도커 컨테이너의 이미지 tarball을 이용하여 pivot_root와 mount namespace까지 적용하여 실제 도커 방식과 유사하게 컨테이너를 기동하여 봅니다. 그리고, 컨테이너 이미지 용량/중복을 해결하기 위한 overlayFS 에 대하여 다룹니다. https://netpple.github.io

Functional Operations: Packaging, system/configuration building, and testing infrastructure with [Nix] lambda Maintaining configurations for different kinds of nodes and cloud resources in a [micro]service architecture can be an operational nightmare, especially if not managed with the application codebase. CI and CD job environments diverge from production configuration yielding their results unpredictable at best or produce false positives in the worst case. Code pushes to staging and production can have unintended consequences that can't be reasoned about before deploy and often can’t be inspected thoroughly on a dry run. Leading to unhappy users when problems do arise. This session will demonstrate the use of the Nix and NixOS ecosystem to define and build packages in a referentially transparent way which can be leveraged as a solid foundation to configure systems and test multiple [virtual] machines with coordinated scenarios. We also look at how reliable packaging allows us to build a consistent CI/CD pipeline where upgrading your version of the JVM doesn't break your CI build servers for days.

What's the difference between Docker, Machine, Compose, and Swarm? Why the heck should I care? Well, Docker makes it easier than ever to deploy and scale your applications and services. In addition, it lets you simulate your production environment on your local machine without heavy virtual machines. Virtual machines are generally considered secure. At least, secure enough to power highly multi-tenant, large-scale public clouds, where a single physical machine can host a large number of virtual instances belonging to different customers. Containers have many advantages over virtual machines: they boot faster, have less performance overhead, and use less resources. However, those advantages also stem from the fact that containers share the kernel of their host, instead of abstracting a new independent environment. This sharing has significant security implications, as kernel exploits can now lead to host-wide escalations. We will show techniques to harden Linux Containers; including kernel capabilities, mandatory access control, hardened kernels, user namespaces, and more, and discuss the remaining attack surface.

Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
