This document discusses host microbiome environments and how they can be categorized into three types: 1) nutrient acquisition, 2) pathogens, and 3) changing environment. It also outlines a five step process for engineering microbiomes which includes characterizing existing microbiomes, reducing them in a controlled way, reintroducing microbes, assessing new introductions and interactions, and applying engineering principles. The overall goal is to develop control over the host microbiome environment.
