Three point lighting is the best technique when time allows for setup. It uses a key light as the primary light to establish texture, a fill light to reduce harshness from the key, and a back light behind and above to add dimension. The key light should be above at a 45 degree angle, while the fill balances it and the back light adds depth without being too harsh on the camera lens if positioned incorrectly. Flood lighting covers a large area in light and outdoor lighting works best at dawn, dusk, or overcast to avoid harsh direct sunlight.
