Shot Types A generic term for how you have framed your subject
Wide Shot Highlights setting then very small subject
 
Full Shot Head to Toe Shows Subject and Setting equally
 
Mid Shot Cuts Subject in Half Details subject then background
 
Close Up Details Subject only Get as close as you think you need to be, then two Steps Closer
 
Headroom The space between the top of the picture and the top of your subject. Relative to Shot type Less is Better
 
Lookroom The space between the implied lines off a stationary subject and the edge of the screen. Gives life Can be purposefully misused
 
Leadroom The space between the direction of a moving subject and the edge of the picture. Relative to speed of object
 
Framing with Objects Foreground objects frame background subjects. Form in the foreground; Shape in the background L-Lines are great for Framing
 
Avoiding Mergers Objects, usually lines, in the foreground or background that combine with subject
