A useful guide of using a word cloud in the classroom. It can be used for lesson summaries, quizzes, icebreakers and feedback. Word clouds will make your classes engaging and interactive.
Do you struggle to increase student reading levels? In this session, you will learn how to incorporate an independent rigorous reading program that will increase student reading levels. This session will use Common Core state standards, journal writing, project-based learning, and Accelerated Reader to increase student engagement and reading levels.
Presenter(s): Ashley Davis and Phillip Perry
Blended Learning Institute (BLI) graduate Matthew Turner utilized many different edtech tools in an effort to prepare his 8th grade Algebra class for the Common Core Exam, including Canvas (an online discussion board) and online lessons for differentiated pacing. In this presentation he reflects on the results of using these tools and the struggles he faced with student motivation.
Although we have a strong body of best practices with English Learners (ELs), inequities continue to prevail. How do we create a heightened sense of urgency and increase stakeholder sensitivity to ELs’ school experiences? This session will focus on creating instructional tools to gauge the presence and strength of evidence-based instruction as used in daily practice. Participants will consider specific actions that lead to improved student outcomes and systemic access and equity for ELs.

The Open Textbook Network: libraries working together to advance open textbooksSarah Cohen
Over the last three years, the Open Textbook Library, now hosting upwards of 175 complete open textbook titles, has built these titles’ credibility and increased faculty exposure to open textbooks by incentivizing textbook reviews by faculty from institutions across the country. Libraries have been at the core of our outreach and are our most integral partners in reaching faculty and building capacity on campuses for open textbooks. At the invitation of our partner libraries, we’ve visited dozens of schools to seed and support their open education programs. As a result, our partner institutions’ data shows that over 40% of their faculty attendees to our workshops adopt an open textbook. This small pilot group of faculty has saved students over $410,000 in textbook costs in less than three years.
This presentation will introduce attendees to the Open Textbook Network - a consortium of institutions working to help faculty overcome barriers to adoption of open textbooks, increase institutional capacity to support faculty adoption and use of open textbooks, and collaboratively develop new understandings and best practices of open textbook adoption and use. Attendees will learn more about what’s to come for the Open Textbook Library, our partners, our data, and why open textbooks are a sustainable avenue towards initiating and sustaining open education programming.

Webinar: Assessing to Inform Teaching and Learning: A Guide for LeadersDreamBox Learning
School and district-wide use of classroom-based formative assessment is an essential part of informing teacher planning and instruction, as well as meaningful student achievement. In this webinar, Francis (Skip) Fennell, L. Stanley Bowlsbey Professor of Education and Graduate and Professional Studies Emeritus, McDaniel College, shares a framework for school and district-based leaders to develop elements of leadership while establishing a grade-level or school-based learning community focusing on everyday use of formative assessment.
Topics include:
• Assessment literacy and the use of particular tools to guide and monitor the use of the formative assessment techniques presented
• How ongoing, everyday use of the “Formative 5” intersects with summative assessment data and frame assessment decisions
• A leadership framework to guide successful implementation of the “Formative 5,” including coaching, navigating relationships, learning communities and adult learners
All school and district-based leaders, and K-12 educators are invited to watch this recorded webinar.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. What is the ratio of teacher talk vs. student talk?
2. How do the questions students are asked to grapple with support student
understanding?
3. Do the students ask each other questions? How often?
4. Do students use academic talk when they share their voice?
5. Do I provide students with a variety of options to share their voice?
(i.e., Blogging, VoiceThread, Google Hangout, Presentations, Videos,
and more)

33. Three Questions To Ask About Student Choice
1. Do we ask 25 students to complete the same project or do we assign
authentic tasks that require critical thinking, collaboration, choice, and
contribution?
2. Should student choice be reserved for Genius Hour or should it be
integrated in assignments and assessment?
3. How does student choice support student understanding?
34. What is really important is to focus on
new relationships; teacher to
students, students to students;
students to the world, teachers to
teachers. It’s also about how willing
we are as educators to shift the
control of learning in the classroom
from the teacher to the student.

2. What is the difference between consumption and contribution?
3. Is our classroom designed to support compliance or student contribution?
