Digital Leadership is Instructional Leadership

  1. I can explain this to them before we do our introductions. It’s a way to push the app and make it more applicable to the participants.
  2. The role of the principal has changed. Our title came from the term, “Principal Teacher” or lead teacher in the days of the one room school when the principal was the source of all instructional knowledge. That responsibility has not changed, nor should it. However, principals are now responsible for student growth and achievement, improving instructional practices, facilitated a shared vision of the school, teacher evaluations, athletics, establishing partnerships with parents, connecting with community members, facilitating innovation, increasing learning opportunities for students, and staying current on the best instructional practices. We attend a number of meetings in a day. We delegate some of our duties, but in the end, we are the ones responsible for the work.

Digital leadership is a means to making a greater impact on curriculum, instruction, assessment, and learning by increasing the collaborative process to expand beyond the walls of the school. Digital leadership is a way broaden our reach as instructional leaders and having a greater impact on student learning overall.   4. Lots of demands for school leaders; responsibilities to help teachers plan, provide vision and leadership; inspire and spur change Rigors of Instructional leadership include: Addressing 4 C’s Digital Literacy Connected Students and Learning Building up Learning Networks
  5. 4 C’s - Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Communicating, Collaborating - 21st century learning needs Do these match up to teaching and learning directives in your district? Students need new learning environments and teachers have to provide more Evidences a need for PBL Can’t accomplish these goals with an emphasis on 3 R’s Instructional leadership helps provide the direction for this shift
  6. Talk here about the fundamental need to change teaching and how we plan and deliver instruction If we don’t shift our focus to 21st century learning needs we will always look back on the fundamentals - 3 R’s, straight rows, raising hands for answers, rigid grading, as the standard

  8. fortunate to have support agencies that help paint a great picture of where we need to go and give guidance on how to get there Good to have and use standards. We should look at them and think where we need our instruction to be. What do our students need to look like? What skills do they need to have Our leadership is critical to see our the instruction in our classroom change I moved this image to the previous slide in order to compare the standards side by side and it enhances the rigor that’s now a part of instructional leadership. Should we also discuss how instructional leadership is collaborative work with teachers? In this day and age, we are all instructional leaderships, especially teachers since they are doing the daily instruction. Collaboration is essential for both - students have to be collaborative to demo learning and be creative; teachers have to collab to create new learning experience for students
  9. Talk here about getting teachers and students connected, using technology in the classroom to help learning. Students and teachers are not addicted to the device but they are addicted to the information

  11. Time for reflection in our practice If we have a good direction/goal, what are we doing to help move our institutions in that direction? Use ISTE Standards - strategic and provide good description. Used for Digital Principal criteria Provide a focus for our work, common language and goals
  12. Our leadership should be about changing teaching and learning practices To change how teaching is delivered and designed How learners can show learning and connect to resources and others Our leadership is transformative.
  13. This is our opportunity to change aspects of our leadership. Students are the reason we have school, teachers are the most important people in the school but the most influential is the principal. This is a chance for us to change our process and use more effective tools in changing and affecting the critical aspects of our schools and classrooms and ultimately our teachers and students
  14. How will we get this done? What are our major areas of focus? We have come up with some focus points and digital tools/media to help
  15. Make sure we mention that this mention is about broad VISION OF SCHOOL but also have to mention VISION FOR INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP: what do we want instruction to look like? What do teachers need to make the shift? How do we want students to look and what do we want them to do in this new vision?
  16. Tools help share your vision, enhance vision and share the direction of the instructional shift. Give an example New Gahana or NAHS and new learning spaces Spring Lake middle changing how we engage students with teaching shifts and tools. Spread the news on these tools
