Greetings,
Throughout my career in education I have found there to be no shortage of studies that have shown the
value of early childhood education. Time and time again it has been proven that a strong early foundation
directly correlates with life-long success in emotional, social and physical domains. A child`s experience in
their early years of life, the time when the brain most rapidly grows, directly effects the type of adult they will
become. This is why our work as educators is crucial. These studies and evidences are what I believe in.
It has been widely established that the most appropriate experiences to provide young children with are
ones that are child-centered. Approaches must respect an individual child's unique zone of proximal
development. Yet, all around the world we find most schools do not have children at the core of their
philosophy. We live in a  world that is obsessed with accountability and scores at the expense of the child.
We find schools that dote on that fact that they are `academically rigorous` and that their students are
`above grade level`. They promote these values, yet, at many schools you find children who are lacking
across areas of social-emotional and physical development. While it is necessary to provide children the
academic skills they need to be successful in our competitive world it should not come at the expensive of
compromising the integrity of authentic learning. A learning environment, as with all things in life, must strive
for a balance. I want to work with those who aim to achieve such a balance.
I sought a career in education because of the belief that education is one of the strongest ways to
promote social justice and equality. Providing a person with an education promotes the concept of
equalising options and closing gaps of social inequality. It has been a long standing goal of mine to promote
egalitarianism which is best accomplished by educating and working with students and their families
through an integrated and holistic approach. I admire approaches that not only focus on developing the
child`s sense of self but I also subscribe to academic philosophies that promote an awareness of others in
society. Additionally, it is not enough only to have the children become aware of social issues but there
should be a promotion of student-initiated action which addresses relevant social issues.
I greatly admire schools wherein it is clear that the core philosophy is one that promotes a holistic
education that does not lose sight of what is developmentally appropriate for a child. The promotion of
social responsibility and supporting children to be people who contribute positively back into society is
something that is clearly evident across all aspects of your school. These philosophies and approaches are
what truly enable children to be well-rounded and grounded people. Students who are exposed to this quality
of education will be more equipped to manage the complexities of the world we live in. I would love to find a
way to advocate, promote and work for a community with your values and philosophy.
