The document discusses lessons in information governance from a presentation given by John Newton, founder and CTO of Alfresco. Some key lessons are that closed systems are not always the most effective, strong governance is needed to make open collaboration work, zero tolerance policies do not work with users, effective governance should be invisible to users, and governance does not stop at organizational boundaries. Alfresco provides an open source content management platform and has over 180,000 community members, 200 partners, and manages over 10 billion documents for 1,300 customers in 180 countries.

Information Governance is a critical component in today’s business world to ensure that ALL information is visible, organized, and compliant. This solution can help your business to gain a competitive edge through the strategic and economic use of information. Despite the critical need, many companies still struggle to get funding and buy-in from upper management to move initiatives forward. This presentation will highlight key focus points for IG advocates to get internal stakeholders on board.

Information Governance, Managing Data To Lower Risk and Costs, and E-Discover...David Kearney
Information governance, records and information management, and data disposition policies are ways to help lower costs and mitigate risks for organizations. Policies and procedures to actively manage data are not just an IT "problem," they're a collaborative business initiative that is a must in today's "big data" environment. With electronic discovery rules, government regulations and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, all organizations must proactively take steps to manage their data with well-governed processes and controls, or be willing to face the risks and costs that come along with keeping everything. Organizations must know what information they have, where it is located, the duration data must be retained and what information would be needed when responding to an event.
There have been numerous instances of severe legal penalties for organizations that did not have an electronic data strategy, tools, processes and controls to locate and understand their own data. In addition, the risks of unmanaged data include skyrocketing infrastructure and personnel costs and an increase in attorney time to manage massive amounts of data when a litigation event occurs.
Information governance is needed much like any business continuity and disaster recovery plans, but with an understanding of data: where data are located, how data are managed, event response, and regular testing of processes and procedures for preparedness.

The emergence of the mobile workforce has left an indelible mark on the enterprise; every employee is now mobile, and business data continues to be dispatched to the far reaches of the enterprise. While this has added enormous opportunity for increased productivity, it has also muddied the waters when it comes to controlling and protecting valuable data assets. As companies quickly evolve to address the new set of challenges posed by this shift in data usage, IT must ensure that all data, no matter where it’s generated or stored, is available and governed just as if it were still safely behind the corporate firewall.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Malcolm Chisholm as he explains the myriad challenges that mobile data introduces when addressing regulations and compliance needs, requiring new approaches to data governance. He’ll be briefed by Dave Packer of Druva, who will outline his company’s converged data protection strategy, which brings data center class capabilities to backup, availability and governance for the mobile workforce. He will share strategies to meet regional data residency, data recovery, legal hold and eDiscovery requirements and more.

Content Chaos: Why SharePoint and Office 365 Aren't the (only) AnswerZia Consulting
When Microsoft launched SharePoint, it was made for simply sharing documents within departments. Today, many organizations are trying to use it as their primary content management solution—their “system of record”—even though it was never designed for this.
In a recent ECM market study we see that:
93% of respondents use SharePoint in some manner within their organization
More than 75% still have a “strong commitment” to it
Yet...
Only 11% of these organizations see their deployment as a success
Why is this?
The leading concern is around the lack of true information governance capabilities within SharePoint. This makes it challenging to address compliance and security concerns. Additionally, significant issues remain around utilizing SharePoint for workflow/business processes or case management tasks. Finally, confusion around how to leverage SharePoint Online and Office 365—whether as a standalone or hybrid model—has further contributed to the “content chaos” around SharePoint.
In order to be successful, you need an organizational content management strategy that provides IT with security and compliance, while giving end users an intuitive experience for increased adoption. Ideally, your ECM should include:
SharePoint integration and synchronization
Federated search
Automated records management
Universal Content Security—from SharePoint to Alfresco and external collaboration
Document processing including case management and capture
Integration with Office/Email 365
and more….
How we can help
This presentation will further discuss known issues around SharePoint. We will also identify ways your company can implement solutions that ensure security and user adoption—through integration with your existing SharePoint deployment. You will also have the opportunity to network with industry peers and talk with leaders in ECM solutions.

The Digital Enterprise - Alfresco Summit Keynote 2014John Newton
US Fed Reserve says that productivity growth been declining in the 21st Century and IT has not necessarily been the solution. In Europe, growth has stalled completely and economies are facing the prospect of deflation. Business and operational models from the 20th Century no longer scale as we face exponential growth in information, activity and connections. We no longer give workers the scope or space to get work done. Waste and ad hoc process are killing us. We must reorganise how the company works and the way we do work. We must eliminate the waste of unnecessary paperwork, busy work and communication by digitising, automating and measuring that work into a Digital Enterprise. We must allow The Digital Enterprise will integrate information, processes, work and people to collaborate more efficiently and effectively to produce more valuable products and services.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
