Khadija was the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad and the first woman to accept Islam. She was twice married before and had children from her previous marriages. Khadija proposed to Muhammad after receiving a good report about him. They had a 25-year long marriage, during which Khadija was extremely supportive of Muhammad and his message. She was the first to believe he was a prophet when others did not. The Prophet had great love and respect for Khadija, referring to her virtues and calling her the best of women.

3. Biography of Khadija
Name: Khadija Bint Khuwailid.
Title: Tahira & Umm Hind
Mother‟s name was Fatimah Bint Za‟idah
 She was twice married before.
 Her first husband‟s name was Atiq ibn Aabid and they had
a son called Haritha.
 Her second husband name was Abu Halah Taymi and they
had one son and one daughter.
 In total she had 2 sons and one daughter when she
married the Prophet.

4. Marriage
 After the trip from Syria and receiving a glowing
report from Maysarah Khadija proposed to the
Prophet.
 They both had common roots
 They had common roots in their tribe, Quraysh.
 Both held a noble position in their tribe.
 Business & trade.
It is important in marriage many a times to find
similarities and common themes. Also, having the
same culture, thinking & upbringing helps stabilise
the marriage.

6. Nikah
 Some scholars are of the opinion that the father
of Khadija had passed away before the nikah.
 Prophet‟s uncle were present during the Nikah
ceremony.
 Prophet was 25 and Khadija was 40.
 Difference in age does not matter in Islamic rulings.
 However, the Prophet did encourage virgins to
marry virgins which is proven by many Ahadith.

7. Mahr (Dowry)
 The dower was fixed at 12 awqiyah of Sliver. One
awqiyah is equivalent to forty dirhams. So in total
it was 480 dirhams.
 That would come to £80 nowadays.
 Another narration says 20 she camels were fixed
as the dower.

9. Walima
 While the Prophet was taking Khadija home, she
suggested that he should slaughter a one or two
camels to give to the people.

 Narration by Afif.
 He & Abbas came to Makkah for trade.
 A man came out the tent and started to pray.
 Then a woman came out, then a boy.
 I asked Abbas what is this, he said “This is a religion we do not know. He
claims to be a Prophet of God. The woman is his wife and the boy is his
cousin”.
 Afif says “Would I have believed that day I would had been the second!”.

• Sayyiduna Ja‟far ibn Abu Talib says the Prophet said the best of its woman is
Maryam and the best of its woman is Khadija. (Bukhari) „its‟ referring to

• Aisah said “ I was not jealous of any other wife of the Prophet as I was about
Khadija because how I would hear him speak about her. Allah had
commanded the Prophet to give her good news of a house of hollowed
pearl in a graden where there is not fatigue or clamour. (muslim)

 Aisyah says the Prophet would never get tired in praising
Khadija. Once I became jealous and said Allah has given you a
replacement for an old woman. I saw the Prophet became very
angry so I said to myself O Allah if you remove the anger from
the Prophet I will not mention her badly. After the prophet saw
how I felt he said “How can you say that! By Allah she believed
in me when people did not, she gave me refuge when people did
not, she believed in me when people called me liar and she gave
me children when you did not.
