The document discusses different types of leads or introductions to stories, including straightforward summaries, provocative questions, quotes, scenes, images, anecdotes and personal stories. It advises writers to try several different beginnings before choosing the best one, and that the second paragraph often works well as the first. Writers should make sure elements introduced in the lead appear throughout the piece.
Woody Allen's latest movie, Midnight in Paris, which opens in wide release Friday, is centered on Gil (Owen Wilson), a struggling writer, and his dream-like journey back to 1920s Paris. There, he meets Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, and more, in scenes filled with cultural and literary allusions. Most are middle-brow, some are high-brow, a few are practically inscrutable. To help get you in on the jokes, here's a spoiler-heavy compendium of some of the movie's best references.

The articles with which David Lodge entertained and enlightened readers of the Independent on Sunday and The Washington Post are now revised, expanded and collected together in book form.
The art of fiction is considered under a wide range of headings, such as the Intrusive Author, Suspense, the Epistolary Novel, Time-shift, Magical Realism and Symbolism, and each topic is illustrated by a passage or two taken from classic or modern fiction. Drawing on writers as diverse as Henry James and Martin Amis, Jane Austen and Fay Weldon and Henry Fielding and James Joyce, David Lodge makes accessible to the general reader the richness and variety of British and American fiction. Technical terms, such as Interior Monologue, Metafiction, Intertextuality and the Unreliable Narrator, are lucidly explained and their application demonstrated.
Bringing to criticism the verve and humour of his own novels, David Lodge has provided essential reading for students of literature, aspirant writers, and anyone who wishes to understand how literature works

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnât one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

1. LEDES
Also known as leads. Also known as âthe beginning of
your storyâ
2. IN THE BEGINNING
ď˘ A strong beginning draws in the reader and holds
the reader.
ď˘ Itâs the hook, prime real estate
ď˘ There are many different ways to start, and most
writers will try several different beginnings before
finding the best one.
ď˘ For some reason, many writers find that the second
paragraph should usually be the first one.
3. STRAIGHTFORWARD/SUMMARY
ď˘ PARIS â In a cultural twofer that makes it Frank
Gehry week here, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, a
private cultural center and contemporary-art
museum designed by Mr. Gehry, had its official
inaugural ceremony on Monday, attended by the
French president, François Hollande. At the same
time, the Pompidou Center across town is giving
Mr. Gehry, based in Los Angeles, a major career
retrospective, his first in Europe.
ď˘ âNew York Times Oct. 21, 2014
4. THE WHOLE STORY IN THE LEDE
ď˘ Less than a year has elapsed since Oxford
Dictionaries declared âselfieâ its word of the year for
2013, and though many people regarded selfies as
an art form long before that the time has clearly
come for formal recognition. Visionaire, a publisher
that produces pricey limited editions (which it calls
issues), is devoting its current issue, Visionaire 64,
to works by the conceptual artist John Baldessari,
who has used celebrity self-portraits provided for
the project as his raw material.
ď˘ âIbid, NYT, Oct. 21
5. SCENE & DESCRIPTION
âLindsay Lohan moves through the Chateau Marmont
as if she owns the place, but in a debtor-prison kind
of way. Sheâll soon owe the hotel $46,000. Heads
turn subtly as she slinks toward a table to meet a
young producer and an old director. The actressâs
mother, Dina Lohan, sits at the next table. Mom
sweeps blond hair behind her ear and tries to
eavesdrop. A few tables away, a distinguished-looking
middle-aged man patiently waits for the
actress. He has a stack of presents for her.â
âTimes Magazine, January 10
6. ANECDOTE FROM AN INTERVIEW
ď˘ KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza StripâThe images of so
many houses destroyed, so many bomb blasts,
even so many bodies wrapped in burial shrouds
can begin to blur together, indistinguishable. But
Belal Khaled, a young photojournalist and painter in
this southern Gaza town, saw symbols and stories
in the smoke all around him.

Israel-Gaza Conflict, NY Times, Oct. 21
7. A PROVOCATIVE QUESTION:
âWhat is the solution to affordable housing in New
York?â
âTrading Parking Lots for Affordable Housing, NY
Times, Oct. 21, 2014
8. AN IMAGE
âPassersby of the Standard hotel on Manhattanâs
Washington Street will encounter an inflatable
rainbow structure of indeterminate shape,
beginning this week. At night it lights up like an
alien pod thatâs just set down from a planet located
in the artist James Turrellâs high-school locker.â
ââWhat Is That Glowing Orb in Manhattanâs
Meatpacking District?â, Vanity Fair, September,
2014
9. A QUOTE
ď˘ âITâS A MOVIE in which you never forget you are
watching these actresses,â director Olivier Assayas
said at the press conference following the
screening of his magnificent Clouds of Sils Maria, a
film that explores the unstable boundaries between
performing and being. âThese actresses,â who were
seated stage right from Assayas, are Juliette
Binoche, who plays Maria Enders, an internationally
renowned star, and Kristen Stewart, as Valentine,
Mariaâs personal assistant...
ď˘ âART FORUM, âNew York Film Festival, Dispatch
5,â Oct. 11, 2014
10. PERSONAL ANECDOTE
ď˘ In the 1990s, some seven years before Sofia
Coppola released âLost in Translationâ â and we
got to watch Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray
transact disassociation in Tokyo â I visited Japan
for nearly a month. The first experience sticks with
me: being locked into the bus from the airport, by
the driver, listening as a fellow passenger sneezed
over and over again.

11. AND THE LIST GOES ON
ď˘ A good exercise is to try a variety of different ledes: write
many different starts
ď˘ Never feel locked into your first beginning
ď˘ Your beginning should have resonance throughout the
piece
ď˘ Either circularly (come back to the start)
ď˘ Chronologically if you start in the beginning
ď˘ Thematically
ď˘ All elements mentioned in the lede, if itâs a summary, will
make an appearance in the story
ď˘ For more ideas, check out this gallery of award-winning
ledes
ď˘ Read for âstartsââpay attention to how pieces begin.
Editor's Notes
James Stewart is talking about strategy for starting journalism stories, but many of the concepts he discusses are applicable no matter what kind of piece youâre writing.
