Gil Pender is a screenwriter who is unhappy with his relationship and life in modern Paris. Each night at midnight, he travels back in time to the 1920s where he meets famous historical figures like Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. He falls in love with a woman from the 1920s, which causes him to question if he belongs in the past rather than his own time. The audience understands Gil's desire to stay in the past because they see how well he fits in with the crowd from the 1920s.
