User experience design (UX) aims to enhance user satisfaction and productivity by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the product. UX design uses techniques from human-centered design and information architecture to understand users and specify program requirements from the early stages of product development. Service design applies similar human-centered principles to the design of services to improve customer experience. Key benefits of UX and service design include higher conversion rates, reduced costs, improved customer satisfaction and loyalty, and a competitive advantage.
George Salinas gave a seminar on graphic design trends for 2011. He discussed that graphic design involves conveying messages to targeted audiences through visual communication using symbols, images, and typography. For website design, he emphasized having strong interaction, information, and graphic design, including intuitive navigation, informative content, and appealing visuals. Salinas also presented five principles for design - attract, engage, inform, identify, and incentify audiences. He concluded that the most important trend is simplicity and knowing the target audience.
This is a presentation I gave at the UX Lx conference in Lisbon, Portugal in May 2010.
Ad agencies today are trapped between an old business model and a new media landscape. As people spend more and more of their time and money online, marketers are following their potential customers to the digital world. But the web is fundamentally more complex than any previous advertising medium, and has much more to do with software engineering than traditional advertising.
Too often teams are still approaching digital as an extension of the decades-old, one-way communications model of advertising by merely creating interactive versions of traditional executions. User experience designers, information architects and usability experts are brought into agencies and segregated to roles as new media translators, but are excluded from the higher level strategy, planning and creative design process. They become subject matter experts who are limited to a single medium or field.
This pattern won't change just by educating advertising professionals of the importance of the user experience - it takes a more fundamental change in the whole advertising industry - what people see as effective marketing, and how it is built. This presentation raises questions about how user experience design can contribute to a new, more integrated way of working across and through various media and disciplines.

Bridging the gap between Industrial and Interaction Design to develop better products and services for the physical-digital age.
In a future where digital services and physical products come together, it seems like the tech community is having the greatest influence on our world. In some ways, this is great, but we seem to have forgotten those designers with the talent for crafting physical forms that can fit into our hands, our homes and our lives. For a future Internet of Things we need to better engage Industrial Designers in what we do. This talk will explore how we do that, from connecting between the two fields, calibrating individuals and teams, and collaborating towards a common purpose. Attendees should attend this session to get a better understanding of the needs and value offer of Industrial Design for a future of connected devices, and to find ways to work better alongside Industrial Designers.
Design can help businesses innovate more successfully by:

2) Articulating compelling visions of opportunities to attract investment and identify viable applications.
3) Communicating complex innovations more effectively to customers and investors through tools like animations, prototypes, and experience maps.

The document concludes with advice on applying AXD through research, design, specification, testing, collaboration, managing expectations, and continuous delivery.
Wendy Castleman presented on how Intuit shifted its focus from ease of use to designing for delight. In 2007, Intuit focused on solid products and ease of use. Researchers conducted user studies but changes were not always made based on findings. By 2009, Intuit created Innovation Catalysts to apply design for delight principles across the company. It grew the Catalyst team and used tools like journey mapping and prototyping to influence others. By 2013, design for delight was becoming part of Intuit's culture, and the company was innovating with new platforms, mobile apps, and offerings to profoundly delight customers.

Overview
Over the past ten years the world of digital tools has shifted from B2B to B2C. Interfaces that were once purely utilitarian have taken a path that not only integrated them with physical products, but also surpassed the physical product – becoming the product themselves. The most successful companies know how to wield UX as a strategy for engaging their user’s attention, whether it’s their employee, or their customer. Companies who confuse UX with merely making an interface “pretty” will fail every time. To better understand how to leverage UX as a competitive advantage, Mariah will talk about:
The difference between UX and UI, and why it is so often confused
The history of UX as an industry
Measuring maturity of UX in an organization
Objective
Participants will leave this presentation with the tools to articulate what UX is, how this role came into being, and how to identify UX maturity within an organization.
Target Audience
Developers, UX professionals, interface designers, product managers, executives, CIO’s, and any business leader who is interested in articulating the scope and application of UX surrounding product development.
Assumed Audience Knowledge
This presentation assumes the audience has a solid understanding of digital product development.
Five Things Audience Members Will Learn
The true scope of what UX activities encompass
The origin of experience design
Why there is so much confusion around what a UX professional does
Identifying the digital divide in an organization
How to understand how mature UX practices are at the organizational level

Truth and Dare - Out of the echochamber into the fireJason Mesut
This document provides a summary of a presentation given by Jason Mesut on the topics of truth and dare in the field of user experience (UX). Some of the key points made in the presentation include:
1) There is no single universal truth in UX and celebrating individual "rockstars" can weaken the field by promoting dogma over practical techniques.
2) Most UX work is done by practitioners who are not well-known, and some of the quietest people have valuable insights to share.
3) The UX field is at risk of "eating itself" as the term becomes diluted and salaries increase disproportionately for junior practitioners providing lower quality work.

A Unified Content Strategy (to quote Ann Rockley) is vital to any business today - but if we content strategists think we can "own" this simply by our special training, we are mistaken. Content Strategy today is the responsibility of everyone in the company, and silos are no longer adapted to 21st century businesses. Presentation for Writers UA West 2014.
The document discusses the importance of user experience in business. It provides examples of companies like Netflix, iTunes, and iPhone that have achieved success through focus on user experience rather than just technological capabilities. The key aspects of successful experience design highlighted are that it is multidisciplinary, cultural, invisible when done right, and integrates user needs with business goals. Rapid prototyping and getting user feedback in short iterations is also emphasized.

This document discusses how to design for "what doesn't exist yet" through human-centered design and seeking future needs. It proposes focusing on "tribes" of extreme or non-normal users who may indicate future changes.
