Placement lines are dark lines on the formed surface at the boundary between adjacent batches of concrete. Generally, they indicate that the vibrator was not lowered far enough to penetrate the layer below the one being vibrated.
Cold joints —Delays in concreting can result in cold joints. To avoid cold joints, placing should be resumedsubstantially before the time of initial set. For unusually long delays during concreting, the concrete should be kept live by periodically revibrating it. Concrete should be vibrated at approximately 15 minute intervals or less, depending upon job conditions. Concrete should not be over vibrated to the point of causing segregation. Furthermore, should the concrete approach time of initial setting, vibration should be discontinued and the concrete should be allowed to harden. A cold joint will result, and suitable surface preparation measures should be applied

ASSESSMENT OF SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE IMMERSED IN ACIDIC SOLUTIONS WITH PART...Ijripublishers Ijri
The present investigations are proposed to study the acid resistance behavior of M40 grade SCC with partial replacement
of cement with mineral admixture Fly Ash at 10, 20, and 30%. Rational method of mix design was adopted for mix
design of M40 grade SCC for the trial mixes in the absence of BIS code for SCC mix design. Experimental investigations
were carried out to study the acid resistance of SCC from hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulphuric acid (H2So4) which are
effective acids expected to cause damage for strength and durability of structures, by observing the effect for 14, 28 and
60days strengths and performance at different percentages of mix with flyash. Based on these studies, inference was
drawn for durability of structures exposed to such aggressive environment.
The aggregate is a relatively inert material and it imparts volume stability.
The aggregate provide about 75% of the body of the concrete and hence its influence is extremely important (70 to 80 %)
An aggregate should be of proper shape and size, clean, hard and well graded.
It must possess chemical stability and it must exhibit abrasion resistance.

Water (for concrete)
Water is the most important material for construction, especially for making concrete.
The purpose of water in concrete are
a. It distributes the cement evenly.
b. It reacts with cement chemically and produces calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel which gives the strength to concrete.
c. It provides for workability, i.e., it lubricates the mix.
d. Hence, for construction, quantity and quality of water is as important as cement.
As water quantity goes up in a mix (ill effect), the following are the effects:
a. Strength decreases
b. Durability decreases
c. Workability increases
d. Cohesion decreases
e. Economy may increase at the expense of quality and reliability.

Concrete, Cement, Raw Material of Cement, Types, Water, Aggregates, Sand, Mix...Naqeeb Khan Niazi
Concrete is an engineering material that simulates the properties of rock and is a combination of particles closely bound together. It is simply a blend of aggregates, normally natural sand and gravel or crushed rock.
Cement is a dry powdery substance made by calcining lime and clay, mixed with water to form mortar or mixed with sand, gravel and water to make concrete. It is a binder material. Once hardened, cement delivers sufficient strength to erect large industrial structures
Cement is manufactured through a closely controlled chemical combination of calcium, silicon, aluminum, iron and other ingredients. Common materials used to manufacture cement include limestone, shells, and chalk or marl combined with shale, clay, slate, blast furnace slag, silica sand, and iron ore.
Sand a loose granular material that results from the disintegration of rocks, consists of particles smaller than gravel but coarser than silt, and is used in mortar, glass, abrasives, and foundry molds. : soil containing 85 percent or more of sand and a maximum of 10 percent of clay.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

2. Aggregates
08/27/17 CE- Properties of Concrete 2
Granular materials, such as sand, gravel, crushed stone used with
cementing medium to form concrete or mortar.
Aggregates act as a relatively inexpensive inert filler, providing
stability against volume changes and influencing strength.
Fine Aggregate
Diameter< 4.75mm
Coarse Aggregate
Diameter > 4.75mm
3. 08/27/17 CE- Properties of Concrete 3
Coarse Aggregate
Acts as main filler, forms the main bulk mass
Binding material adheres on its surface
Imparts volumetric stability and durability to concrete
Increases crushing strength, resistance to wear and tear, and
water tightness of concrete
Economizes concrete since it is cheaper than cement
4. Expected stone quality for concrete:
1)It should be sufficient compressive strength, toughness against impact load,
2)Should have uniform colour.
3)free from dirt, organic content, salt.
4)20 mm downgraded , should have different size
5)Non reactive to cement.
6)water absorption should not exceed 3%, impermeable, very low-electrical
conductivity, resistant to abrasion.
7)Unit weight should be around 1500 kg/m3.
5. According to shape the aggregate is classified as
•Rounded aggregate
•Irregular or partly rounded aggregate
•Angular aggregate
•Flaky aggregate
•Elongated aggregate
•Flaky and elongated aggregate
Rounded Aggregate
The aggregate with rounded shape has the minimum percentage of voids ranging from
32 to 33%. It gives minimum ratio of surface area to given volume and hence requires
minimum water for lubrication. It gives good workability for the given amount of water
and hence needs less cement for a given water cement ratio. The only disadvantages is
that the interlocking between its particles is less and hence the development of bond is
poor. This is why rounded aggregate is not suitable for high strength concrete and for
pavements subjected to tension.
6. 6
Irregular or Partly Rounded Aggregate
The aggregate with irregular shape has higher percentage of voids ranging from 35 to
37%. It gives lesser workability than rounded aggregate for the given water content.
Water requirement is higher and hence more cement is needed for constant water
cement ratio. The interlocking between aggregate particles is better than rounded
aggregate but not adequate to be used for high strength concrete and pavements
subjected to tension.
Angular Aggregate
The aggregate with angular shape has the maximum percentage of void ranging from
38 to 45%. It requires more water for lubrication and hence it gives least workability for
the given water cement ratio. For constant water cement ratio and workability the
requirement of cement increase. The interlocking between the aggregate particles is
the best and hence the development of bond is very good. This is why angular
aggregate is very suitable for high strength concrete and for pavements subjected to
tension.
7. Flaky Aggregate
The aggregate is said to be flaky when its least dimension is less than 3/5th
(or 60%)
of its mean dimension. Mean dimension is the average size through which th
particles pass and the sieve size on which these are retained. For example, mean
size of the particles passing through 25 mm sieve and retained on 20 mm sieve is
(20+25)/2=22.5 mm. if the least dimension is less than 3/5 x (22.5) = 13.5 mm, then
the material is classified as flaky. Flaky aggregate tends to be oriented in one plane
which affects the durability.
Elongated Aggregate
The aggregate is said to be elongated when its length is greater than 180% of its
mean dimension.
Flaky & Elongated Aggregate
Aggregate is said to be flaky and elongated when it satisfies both the above
conditions. Generally elongated or flaky particles in excess of 10 to 15% are not
desirable.
8.
9. Angular aggregate are superior to rounded aggregate from the following
two points of view:
•Angular aggregate exhibit a better interlocking effect in concrete, which property
makes it superior in concrete used for roads and pavements.
•The total surface area of rough textured angular aggregate is more than smooth
rounded aggregate for the given volume. By having greater surface area, the
angular aggregate may show higher bond strength than rounded aggregate.
•The higher surface area of angular aggregate with rough texture requires more
water for a given workability than rounded aggregate. This means that for a given
set of conditions from the point of view of water-cement ratio and consequent
strength, rounded aggregate gives higher strength.
•As a conclusion we can say that:-
•For a water-cement ratio below 0.4, the use of crushed aggregate has resulted in
strength upto 38% higher than rounded aggregate. With an increase in water-
cement ratio the influence of roughness of surface of the aggregate gets reduced,
presumably because the strength of the paste itself becomes paramount, and at a
water-cement ratio of 0.65, no difference in strength of concrete made with
angular aggregate on rounded aggregate has been observed.
10. Stone availability in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh quality stone is found in:
1)Jaflolg
2)Volagonj (20 Km West of jaflong)
3)Small quantities of stone is found in Chittagong hill tracts, Mymensing.
4)1st
class brick chips.
11. Recycled coarse aggregate:
Concrete aggregate collected from demolished concrete is put through a is
called recycled coarse aggregate. It can be used in concrete, pavement
construction, etc.
These must be made free from the cement and mortar normally attaching the
surface.
12. Example of a lab test result of coarse aggregate:
13. Brick chips as coarse aggregate:
•In concrete good quality Brick chips can be used.
•High strength is hard to achieve.
•Absorbs water in concrete which can harm reinforcement.
