This document presents a proposed transcutaneous energy transfer scheme using a transcutaneous transformer for high gain at variable loads and coupling coefficients. It analyzes the scheme and determines the control region for operating frequency. The document outlines the system design procedure for reduced inductance and current. Some advantages are increased gain for variable loads/coupling, high efficiency power transmission, and no biological effects. Challenges include high cost and limits on usable coil geometry from thermal impacts. The conclusion discusses applications for cardiovascular devices and establishing the design procedure.
